Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XI. MONGOLIAN BUDDHISM. Buddhism as it exists now in Mongolia--Power of Buddhism over its votaries--Noble ideas it has given the Mongols-- Immortality of the soul--Ten black sins--Five Zabsar ugwei sins -- Rewards and punishments--Humanity-- Heaven and Hell--Power of prayer--Adaptation to the capacity of its votaries--Motives are recognized--Resemblances between Buddhism and Christianity--Buddhism hinders material prosperity; by the number of lamas; by its arrogant self-sufficiency--Hinders learning--Oppression exercised by the lamas--Deceit practised by them--The living Buddha system--The lama system a curse; to the lamas themselves; to the people generally--Buddhism has no intelligent worship--Buddhistic worship is debasing--Buddhistic good works often do harm--Buddhism makes men sin in actions which are indifferent--Buddhism fails to produce holiness--Buddhism is a usurper. THIS chapter does not profess to give a systematic account of Buddhism. On that subject numerous and learned treatises have been written, with which most people are more or less familiar. What I propose here to do, is to consider the superficial aspects of Buddhism--the practical part of it, as embodied in the life and habits of the Mongols at the present day. One of the first things the missionary notices in coming into contact with the Mongols, is the completeness of the sway exercised over them by their religion. Meet a Mongol on the road, and the probability is, that he is saying his prayers and counting his heads as he rides along. Ask him where he is going and on what errand, as the custom is, and likely he will tell you he is going to some shrine to worship. Follow him to the temple, and there you will find him one of a company with dust-marked...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Yenisey’s headwaters in the wild heart of central Asia to its mouth on the Arctic Ocean, Colin Angus and his fellow adventurers travel 5,500 kilometres of one of the world’s most dangerous rivers through remotest Mongolia and Siberia, and live to tell about it. Exploration is Colin Angus’ calling. It is not only the tug of excitement and challenge that keeps sending him on death-defying journeys down some of the world’s most powerful waterways, it is a desire to know a place more intimately than you could from the window of a train, to feel the soul of a place. Angus emphasizes that rivers have always been key to the development of complex societies and the rise of civilizations, offering as they do irrigation, transportation, hydroelectric power, and food. But, as Lost in Mongolia captures with breathtaking detail, while they giveth plenty, the great rivers also taketh away in an instant. In Lost in Mongolia, Colin Angus takes readers through never-before-seen territory and his wonderful sense of adventure and humour come through on every page.

Book excerpt: The real-life adventures of a young woman pushing the limits, trusting her instincts and living her life off the beaten path Suffering through searing pain and delirious illness in frigid, makeshift conditions, Chloe Phillips-Harris, at the age of 25 years, summoned every ounce of determination to brave the world's most gruelling horse race - the Mongol Derby. This 1000-kilometre endurance race across the wild steppes, desert and mountains of Mongolia - a competition with no marked course, no support team, that requires riders to switch horses every 40 km - saw almost half the competitors drop out along the way, but Chloe persevered. Fearless recounts Chloe's childhood growing up on a run-down farm in a remote corner of New Zealand, with the odds stacked against her, and shares her life-long dedication to animals that has led her to train wild stallions and help save neglected working animals, travelling to some of the most remote and diverse places on the planet - all of which prepared her to overcome unimaginable challenges during a ride like no other.

Download or read book Mongolian Adventure written by Henning Haslund and published by Long Riders Guild Press. This book was released on 2001-08-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the kind of country that sheltered nomads and harbored renegades. It was wild. It free. It was Mongolia in the early 1920s, that legendary magnet for foot-loose sons of the horizon like Henning Haslund. Descended from a 19th Century Danish explorer, when young Haslund reached Mongolia in 1923 he discovered a lost equestrian world left largely untouched since the Middle Ages. Cruel Buriat warlords ruled a vast grass covered kingdom inhabited by freedom-loving Mongols, tight-lipped Russian mercenaries and the human riff-raff of a dozen countries. It was a world where traditions of poetry and hospitality ran side by side with extreme cruelty. Into this realm of horsemen rode Haslund Henning. He originally planned to journey to Mongolia to help other Danes set up an agricultural cooperative. Yet the dust of the steppes got into his blood. There was always some reason not to return to the boring safety of Europe, some horse to ride, some legend to explore. Mongolian Adventure is Haslund s story of these early adventures. It is an epic tale inhabited by a cast of characters no longer present in this lackluster world, shamans who set themselves on fire, rebel leaders who sacked towns, and wild horsemen whose ancestors conquered the world. Amply illustrated, it remains a classic of equestrian adventure.

Along the way he and his cameraman Leon brave the toxic insides of China's longest road tunnel, explore desolate stretches of the Great Wall and endure interrogation by the Chinese police. As they walk on through the heart of China, the exuberant hospitality of cave dwellers, coal miners and desert nomads keeps them going, despite sub-zero blizzards and the treacherous terrain. Rob writes with humour and honesty about the hardships of the walk, reflecting on the nature of pilgrimage and the uncertainties of an adventuring career. He also gives a unique insight into life on the road amid the epic landscapes and rapidly industrialising cities of backwater China.
