Book Geordie Purdie in London Or the Adventures of a Fifeshireman in the Metropolis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geordie Purdie in London Or the Adventures of a Fifeshireman in the Metropolis Classic Reprint written by Daniel Gorrie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geordie Purdie in London, or the Adventures of a Fifeshireman in the Metropolis The heat and dust of the long drive had made Purdie fancy that his face was not in a fit condition to be seen by the illustrious sovereign of these realms; and accordingly, divested of coat and waistcoat, and with shirt sleeves uprolled, he was busily occupied at his ablutions over a horse-pail, in the rear of one of the lines of vehicles, when the sound of cheers coming nearer and growing louder, like the inrushing tide, announced the rapid approach of the royal cavalcade. Without waiting to rub his face dry or pull down his sleeves, Geordie ran to the cart with his coat and vest under his arm, and remained in this state of dishabille till the imposing pageant went clattering past. Soon as the dust raised by the yeomen escort had cleared away, he uplifted his bare arms, and exclaimed, "Hech me! an' that's the Queen!" - evidently indicating by his tone of surprise that he had expected to see her Majesty wearing on her head, not a simple summer bonnet, but her regal crown of gems and gold. The Fife dialect - which I have done my best to reproduce in reporting Purdie's phrases and narratives is the broadest in "braid Scotland." While the Aberdonian speaks about beets and sheen, meesic and breets, the Fifeshireman comes out with a great mouthful, and gives you butes and shune, music and brutes - the u sounding like the German oe, as in Goethe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of London The exhaustless interest and endless suggestiveness of Ancient and Modern London, have induced the author to collect in these volumes some of its more curious characteristics. His object has been more especially to present to the reader who enjoys the Past without underrating the Present, a collection of strange stories, scenes, adventures, and vicissitudes, associated with London. Romance, we know, has been accused of corrupting the truth of history but the romantic character which the following Narratives possess, has not been gained by a sacrifice of truth; since our Romance consists of marvellous incidents, verifying the saying that Truth is stranger than Fiction. Download or read book Through the South Seas With Jack London Classic Reprint written by Martin Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the South Seas With Jack London Accounts Of dare-devil exploits have always been read with deep interest. One Of the salient features of human nature is curiosity, a desire to know what is being said and done outside the narrow limits Of one's individual experience, or, in other words, to learn the modes Of life Of persons whose environment and problems are different from one's own environment and problems. TO this natural curiosity, the book of travel is particularly gratifying. But when we add to the fact that such a narrative treats of races and conditions almost unknown to the inhabitants Of civilised countries the consideration that those voyageurs to whom the adventures fell are men and women already prominently before the public, and so deserving of that public's special confidence, the interest and value of such a work will be seen to be extraordinarily enhanced.
