Book excerpt: Adventures in Integrative Education is a practical and easily accessible guidebook that tells both why and shows how teachers of the primary grades can meet core curriculum goals while providing the expressive, physical, and social requirements for whole child learning. Integrative Education is highly successful, but few teachers can make time for the extensive lesson design and preparation it requires. This book and companion multimedia platform, The Blue Alligator Blues and Other Video Songs, provide the means for presenting and integrating information into a workable system for learning. The video songs provide easily adaptable activities that enhance literacy for learners with diverse abilities and needs. Jan Magray has eloquently and insightfully captured a desperate need in our society to make education exciting and accessible to all children. This educator has created a format that allows for this method of learning to be easily incorporated into mainstream curriculum. Kara Salomon, M.A., Behavioral Therapist and Special Needs Educator. Magray has a knack for presenting an easy to use and much needed solution while explaining its value. A true gem of a book. Sylvia Rockwell, former Assistant Professor of Education at St. Leo University.

Download or read book Integrative Learning written by Daniel Blackshields and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current teaching, learning and assessment practices can lead students to believe that courses within a programme are self-sufficient and separate. Integrative Learning explores this issue, and considers how intentional learning helps students become integrative thinkers who can see connections in seemingly disparate information, and draw on a wide range of knowledge to make decisions. Written by international contributors who engaged reflectively with their teaching and their students’ learning, the book seeks to develop a shared language of integrative learning, encouraging students to adapt skills learned in one situation to problems encountered in another, and make autonomous connections across courses, between experiences, and throughout their lives. More informed teachers can help students develop the necessary attributes for intentional learning, which include having a sense of purpose, fitting fragmentary information into a ‘learning framework’, understanding something of their own learning processes, asking probing questions, reflecting on their own choices, and knowing when to ask for help. Integrative Learning draws on international research and vast studies to provide the reader with the resources to ensure access to a unified learning experience. The book discusses conceptual and technical tools necessary for facilitating integrative learning across a range of disciplines as well as providing learning pedagogies and considers integrative learning in the context of the relevance of higher education in the complexity and uncertainty of the 21st century. It will appeal to academics and researchers in the field of higher education, as well as those generating higher education curriculums.

Book Integrating Adventure Into the Curriculum

Download or read book Integrating Adventure Into the Curriculum written by Jacob I. Sciammas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of adventurous and challenging experiences is growing in today's school curriculum along with the popularity of outdoor education, recreation and leisure in society at large. The specific experiences in school curriculum most often relate to four fields which share common roots in progressive education: environmental education, outdoor education, experiential education and adventure education. It is useful today to describe these fields under one umbrella as "adventure education" since the practices and goals of each converge in schools. Adventure education today, however popular and justified as beneficial to students, fails to commonly appear in standards or integrated curriculum in schools. The process of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is appropriate to achieve integrated adventure education in schools through a critical, action-research approach and to create success stories to the benefit of others. AI is an effective organizational change model for schools that can also counter-act the limiting, problem-centered nature of today's education system and provide a structure to promote new opportunities for powerful school change. Through the use of the 4-D Cycle and an Appreciative Summit, AI is a timely approach for integrating adventure into physical education and positivel transforming our schools beyond our current scope of understanding.

Book Integrative Learning in US Undergraduate Public Health Education Effective High Impact Practices

Download or read book Integrative Learning in US Undergraduate Public Health Education Effective High Impact Practices written by Andrew Harver and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This current Research Topic does not derive directly from Boyer’s Model of Scholarship, but nonetheless represents a well-timed exploration and example of where higher education has progressed in bringing the innovative, integrative conceptualization of higher education scholarship and practice laid out by Boyer, to realization through the growing arena of undergraduate public health programs. At the same time, the authors included here were invited to specifically address a second arena of scholarly practice associated with additional elements of Boyer’s legacy, effective High-Impact Practices (HIPs) - practices that engage students, faculty and often broader communities in integrative learning that connect academic and extra-academic learning environments. Undergraduate public health programs are perfectly positioned to provide a framework for integrated learning through High-Impact Practices. Such practices encompass not only the essential learning outcomes that employers continue to demand – critical thinking, working with diverse others, written and oral communications, ethics, analysis, etc. – but also a curriculum that is scaffolded and replete with opportunities to practice and enhance performance and application of knowledge and abilities to important personal, social and global challenges and needs.

Book The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences Engineering and Medicine in Higher Education

Download or read book The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences Engineering and Medicine in Higher Education written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, broad study in an array of different disciplines â€"arts, humanities, science, mathematics, engineeringâ€" as well as an in-depth study within a special area of interest, have been defining characteristics of a higher education. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. It explores evidence regarding the value of integrating more STEMM curricula and labs into the academic programs of students majoring in the humanities and arts and evidence regarding the value of integrating curricula and experiences in the arts and humanities into college and university STEMM education programs.
