Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Australia Some years ago two travellers, mounted on wiry yet strong looking steeds, were wending their way through a forest in Australia. They were both young and dressed much alike in broad-brimmed pith hats, loose red shirts, corduroy trousers and high boots with spurs. Each of them had stuck in his belt an axe, a brace of pistols, and a long knife; while at his back was slung a serviceable-looking rifle, showing that they were prepared to defend themselves, Should they encounter any treacherous blacks, a very possible contingency at that period of the country's history. He did not say, and I did not let him know I was aware, that at the time we were boldly cutting in a straight line from promontory to promontory, and that the steady and sure captain was keeping his usual safe distance all the way round, hugging the shore for fear of the storm which was brewing outside. There was no use going into such details. And I'll tell you what, we'll be in Brisbane eight hours before him in spite of his reckless folly.' I didn't doubt it in the least, so shortly afterwards we adjourned to the smoke-room, where several of the passengers had gathered to play cards and tell yarns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jack Harkaway and His Son's, Adventures in Australia When all was landed, the sailors who had rowed Hunston ashore got back into their boat. "Good-bye, Hunston," said Sam Mason; "you're a gallus black-hearted swab, but I hope you'll mend your ways and do well. Remember your old friends on board -" Hunston turned sharply round at this. "Yes," he said, in low, deliberate accents, "I shall not forget. Tell Harkaway that from me. I hope that we may meet again, and when we do, I shall be sure to remember all your kindness - all." "Do you hear that, men?" exclaimed Sam Mason, "There's a brave chap for you. He waits till the governor is a blessed long way out of hearing before he ventures to threaten. He reminds me of the chap as went on to Highgate Hill to tell the Lord Mayor that he'd pull his nose." Hunston stood upon the beach, watching the receding boat, and when it was too far for them to be able to distinguish his movements, he sank upon the ground and buried his face in his hands - a prey to the bitterest thoughts. The shock of solitude was dreadful. Before he met a human being again, he was destined to go through many desperate adventures. But now we have to follow the cruise of the "Westward Ho " About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Final Reckoning: A Tale of Bush Life in Australia In this tale I have left the battlefields of history, and have written a story of adventure in Australia, in the early days when the bush-rangers and the natives constituted a real and formidable danger to the settlers. I have done this, not with the intention of extending your knowledge, or even of pointing a moral, although the story is not without one, but simply for a change - a change both for you and myself, but frankly, more for myself than for you. Book A Colonial Tramp Travels and Adventures in Australia and New Guinea Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Colonial Tramp, Travels and Adventures in Australia and New Guinea, Vol. 1 of 2 To my numerous colonial friends I wish to dedicate the following descriptions and experiences, because without their kindly assistance, advice, and directions, I could not have got along as I did, in the short time at my disposal, during my last tour through their land. Throughout the entire breadth and length of the great continent, and the two opposite islands, New Guinea and Tasmania, friends cropped up as thickly as the tares did in the scriptural devil-sown field (pardon the simile, but I could not, at the moment, think about anything of more phenomenal growth with the same sturdy qualities). But to continue; friends sprang up at every turn, all eager, and, what was more to the purpose, mostly all able, to help me as I sped along. I took their advice when I could do so, and tried to benefit by their experience; and as my former stay in the country enabled me to discriminate what was the most useful to my purpose, I now offer to them all the results, trusting that they may be fairly satisfied with my present efforts to please them. It seems almost an invidious thing to particularise anyone, and I hope that those whose names I may forget to mention in this preface will discover throughout the pages that I have not forgotten to take full advantage of all that they so generously bestowed upon me in the shape of information; I hope also, that, as they pardon my bad memory for names, they will not be so modest as to abstain from taking the credit to themselves when their own particular bit comes in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Hunters Adventures: Or Life in Australia Since my return from Australia, I have been solicited by a number of friends to give them a history of my adventures in that land of gold, where kangaroos are supposed to be as plenty as natives, and jump ten times as far, and Where natives are imagined to be continually lying in ambush for the purpose of making a hearty meal upon the bodies of those unfortunate travellers who venture far into the interior of the country - where bushrangers are continually hanging about camp fires, ready to cut the weasands of those who close their eyes for a moment and lastly, where every other man that you meet is expected to be a convict, transported from the mother country for such petty crimes as forgery, housebreaking, and manslaughter in the second degree. My friends have all desired to hear me relate these particulars, and have honored me with a large attendance at my rooms, and sat late at night, and drank my Wine and water, and smoked my cigars, with a relish that did me great credit, as it showed that I am something of a connoisseur in.the choice of such luxuries. And then they laughed so loudly at my jokes, no matter how poor they were, that, for a few days after my arrival home, I really thought the air of Australia had improved and sharpened my wit. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonist in Australia, or the Adventures of Godfrey Arabin Godfrefarabin was the third son of a respectable trader in a county-town in England. At the early age of eight he was sent to the care of a relative in the south of Scotland, and went to a school of repute in the neighbourhood of his relation's dwelling. He attended the school regularly his relation was a batchelor, and he was allowed to follow the bent of his wild fancy. H 9 mixed with the country-people, and acquired much information - for, as a people, the Scotch stand pre-eminent for intellectual ability, and manv of the lower orders are passionately attached to the literature of their country. The country-people are rather fond of ficti tious and speculative literature, and the schoolboy would often spend the winter evenings with some one who would talk over the adventures of Ivanhoe. When he did not meet with agreeable company, he used to wander among the mountains, thinking on the warriors and people of the Iong-forgotten past, until he would inspire the dull land scape with imaginary beings. He stood in fancy at the head of an array of warriors, while on the opposite side was the enemy's camp. He unsheathed his sword, gave his war-cry, and led to the attack, - the opposing forces are scattered as chaff before the wind. He remembered, when with his mother he went to view one of England's old cathedrals, and gazing with astonishment upon the tombs of the Crusaders, his impression of that strange order was vague and mazy, something like that we might derive from the description of Coeur de Lion, Ivanhoe, and Conrad of Monserrat, in the novel of Ivanhoe. He would bro at over the battles and seiges of the Crusades until his man throbbed and his cheek flushed. He was often overp; owed by an intense melancholy, which he however kept cog' mia, yet at times the most trifling incidents would chill V He commonly took refuge in pious exercises.
