Book Adventist Heritage of Health Hope and Healing

Download or read book Adventist Heritage of Health Hope and Healing written by William C. Andress and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-1800s America, in a milieu where thousands were dying prematurely from tuberculosis, dysentery, yellow fever, cholera, diphtheria, smallpox, and even malaria, God raised up a people with a salvific message, both physically and spiritually. In Adventist Heritage of Health, Hope, and Healing, readers will be spellbound by stories of: The fledgling Western Health Reform Institute which became the largest health care institute of its kind. The $5,000 miracle that led to the founding of Loma Linda University Medical Center, one of the nation's premier medical facilities in southern California. The China Doctor, Grandma Whitney, and the humble academician with three doctorate degrees, who have influenced thousands through an integration of practical religion and health. The prophetic Comprehensive Health Vision that outlines a 10-step program for adding years to your life. In this book, Dr. Andress explores little known historical connections that coalesce into a persuasive case for a Christian theology of healing and wellness. Throughout the book, personal anecdotes and illustrations provide a vivid and tangible portrait of a man seeking to better understand and live out the divine plan for health of body, mind, and soul. A compelling work.--John Wesley Taylor V, Ph.D Professor of education, philosophy, and research, Southern Adventist University If 'The health should be as sacredly guarded as the character' (Child Guidance, page 342), then this volume is as valuable as any work in theology. It is the heritage of all God's children to be healthy.--Arthur Mallon, teacher, author, and evangelist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Adventist health care is rich with stories of hope, health and healing. Beginning in a small farmhouse in Battle Creek, Michigan, these accounts tell of unlikely business arrangements, unexpected gifts and unbroken footsteps of faith. Early healthcare leader, Harley Rice said, "Adventist health care is unique only when it combines science with compassion, competence with love, and skill with understanding and sympathy. When these are combined, the world takes notice." It is our hope that by reading these stories from the past--with remarkable evidence of perseverance and divine providence--our caregivers today find strength and inspiration as they extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether they were utopian communitarians, sun-seeking gurus, or Protestant health reformers, Southern California's spiritual seekers drew on the United States' deepening global encounters and consumer cultures to pair religious and personal reinvention with cultural and spiritual revitalization. Through a rereading of the region's cultural landscape, Golden States provides an alternative history of California religion and spirituality, showing that seekers developed a number of paths to fulfillment that enhanced the region's lifestyle brand. Drawing on case studies as varied as surfing and yoga practices, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, and the only designated "Blue Zone" in the United States, this work explores the long-term impact of alternative beliefs on the region. In doing so, it highlights the ongoing tensions between privileging personal choice and pursuing social good as communities navigated whether the commitment to the emotional and therapeutic needs and desires of individual believers should be pursued at the expense of broader efforts to achieve collective well-being.

Book excerpt: According to Wikipedia's list of the best selling books of all time, Ellen G. White's book, Steps to Christ has sold 62 million copies and her 5000 articles and 40 published books have been translated into more than 140 languages. In 1905 White's book, The Ministry of Healing was first published. In the preface she wrote; It is not the creator's purpose that mankind shall be weighed down with a burden of pain, that his activities shall be curtailed by illness, that his strength wane, and his life be cut short by disease. But all too frequently the laws established by God to govern the life are flagrantly transgressed; sin enters the heart, and man loses sight of his dependence upon God, the source of life and health. Then follow the penalties of transgression--pain, sickness, and death. This book emphasizes the link between diet and spiritual growth. It's a diet book, a self-help book, and a Christian spiritual guide all rolled into one, and it continues to be read widely to this day.

Book excerpt: This 1935 collection of Ellen G. White's admonitions is reprinted in the hope of arousing God's people to follow the divine blueprint of the medical work. The content of this book is briefly summarized in these two statements: "Loma Linda is to be not only a sanitarium, but an educational center. With the possession of this place comes the mighty responsibility of making the work of the institution educational in character. The school that is to be established at Loma Linda is to stand in the freedom of the truth." "Shall we represent before the world that our physicians must follow the pattern of the world, before they can be qualified to be successful physicians? This is the question that is now testing the faith of some of our brethren. Let not any of our brethren displease the Lord by advocating in their assemblies the idea that we need to obtain from unbelievers a higher education that that specified by the Lord."

Book excerpt: This book details how and why Madison College closed. It takes a fascinating look at the reasons why a self-supporting college ultimately had to shut down. “On April 22, 1959, the board of the Nashville Agricultural and Normal Institute (N.A.N.I.), better known as Madison College, voted to start construction of a new hospital facility and to hire a professional fundraising team. The minutes called for ‘immediate steps to be taken to put into operation plans for a central unit from which additions may be made from time to time as needed.’ “The hospital, dedicated in June of 1908 as Madison Rural Sanitarium, had fulfilled a dual role in the life of the Nashville Agricultural and Normal Institute (N.A.N.I.) which had been founded in 1904 and consisted of a farm and sanitarium in addition to a school. The unique purpose of Madison had been to serve as a training base for lay Seventh-day Adventists wanting to extend the mission of the church into the then-underprivileged South. The hospital played an important role in this vision, giving the institutions contact with their communities and also bringing in needed money. Madison Sanitarium and Hospital not only served as the financial base of the self-supporting Adventist movement, but also helped meet the medical needs of the eastern section of Nashville and Davidson County. Its financial strains would affect the entire institution as well as its affiliated self-supporting units looking to it for leadership.” “I believe that many people who have in any way had a relationship to Madison College, directly or indirectly, will find this riveting story of its decline and closure very enlightening. ~ Mary Elizabeth “Ikey” DeVasher, PhD, CRNA Dean Emerita/Adjunct Faculty Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia, Madison, TN “Albert Dittes is a student of the Madison School and his approach to this book on Madison’s closing is very thoughtful and well researched. I recommend his book for your reading.” ~ Jim Culpepper, Exec. Sec/Treas , Madison College Alumni Association “I had no idea that the school was in such shape at the time I was there. I still grieve for Madison College as I hold it to be a wonderful place for people such as I who did not have the means to attend the local union college. For me Madison was a place of refuge and a place that I learned to really appreciate.” ~ Harry Mayden, President Madison College Alumni Association
