Book excerpt: The net tropical forest carbon emission still remains uncertain, challenging the REDD+ monitoring system. This uncertainty is extensively related to the uncertainties in the estimations of the forest cover loss, the extent and intensity of forest degradation events, and the reforestation and regrowth rate. Complex spatiotemporal analysis techniques are needed to improve both spatially and temporally the estimation precision of the forest cover changes on tropical areas. Many remote sensing techniques have been developed to detect Land Cover Changes (LCC), including recent object based approaches exploiting the advantage of extracting changes in their spatial context. However, these previous works have been applied in a limited temporal scale, mostly bi-temporal or reduced multi-temporal image comparison (only few observation dates). In contrast, emerging LCC analysis approaches exploit the full temporal information of land cover dynamics provided by remote sensing dense time series, though they have been mostly applied in a pixel-based approach. Only little research has been done combining both approaches. This MSc. thesis explored the potential of spatiotemporal segmentation and time series analysis. First, LCC was estimated from Landsat time series by the Iterative Reweighted Multivariate Alteration Detection algorithm (iMAD) and spatiotemporal segments were delineated extracting LCC objects. Second, a time series analysis by the mean of the “Break For Additive Seasonal and Trend” (BFAST) algorithm over the LCC segments was performed for characterizing the temporal pattern of the segments. Finally, the information provided by both analysis was integrated for classifying the segments. This spatial and temporal information integration enhanced the capabilities of characterization of the spatial and temporal dynamics of tropical forest disturbances, contributing to increase the understanding of the immediate and long term implications of human activities over the tropical forest. Data abundance was found to be of major importance. Forest and non-forest related land cover changes within the study area have been detected producing satisfactory results. Especially the relations of segments and temporal profile’s need to be further analyzed by making use of multi-temporal change detection products and well framed multivariate analysis.

Book excerpt: With an increasing role of tropical forests supporting a range of ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, water regulation, soil conservation, timber, non-timber forest products, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation, the importance of forest resources management has become very crucial. The tropical forests of Indochina countries are rich in biodiversity and carbon density, and thus are significant from social, ecological, political and economic aspects. These forests provide essential livelihoods to the local and indigenous people. Rapid economic growth, agriculture expansion, illegal logging, population growth, and urbanisation have been reported as major contributors to almost all cases of deforestation. Due to rapid development, forest resources are at a great risk. The FRA 2010 report shows that deforestation caused a loss of about 13 million hectares of tropical forests per year from the year 2000 to 2010. Therefore, there is an urgent need for better management of these resources. This book partially contributes towards climate change mitigation by implementing the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism. To mitigate climate change, most present studies are now concentrated on afforestation, reforestation and reducing deforestation and degradation. This book is focused on the application of multi-sensor remote sensing techniques to manage Cambodian forests for the effective implementation of the REDD+ mechanism. In this context, it is important to obtain reliable and consistent information of (a) forest cover, (b) deforestation, and (c) forest biomass to estimate CO2 emissions for the improvement of national carbon accounting. Additionally, this information will also be used for the development of the measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system and for the management of forest resources to support sustainable forest management. Current knowledge is very limited with regard to the MRV system for REDD+ mechanism implementation. This book demonstrates the use of multi-sensor remote sensing techniques to manage the forest resources more sustainably. Further, it includes a concept on how precisely we can measure various forest parameters to minimise the uncertainty and to validate the results based on field data. The study is very much interdisciplinary in nature. It integrates core remote sensing techniques with the socio-economic angle of the REDD+ mechanism. It emphasises on remote sensing as a technique for ensuring the MRV of REDD+ initiatives, taking into consideration its cost effectiveness in implementation.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis mainly focuses on two subjects related to the application of remote sensing data: (1) for land cover classification combining optical sensor, texture features generated from spectral information and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features, and (2) to develop a non-destructive approach for above ground biomass (AGB) and forest attributes estimation employing multi-source remote sensing data (i.e. optical data, SAR backscatter) combined with in-situ data. Information provided by reliable land cover map is useful for management of forest resources to support sustainable forest management, whereas the generation of the non-destructive approach to model forest biophysical properties (e.g. AGB and stem volume) is required to assess the forest resources more efficiently and cost-effective, and coupled with remote sensing data the model can be applied over large forest areas. This work considers study sites over tropical rain forest landscape in Indonesia characterized by different successional stages and complex vegetation structure including tropical peatland forests. The thesis begins with a brief introduction and the state of the art explaining recent trends on monitoring and modeling of forest resources using remote sensing data and approach. The research works on the integration of spectral information and texture features for forest cover mapping is presented subsequently, followed by development of a non-destructive approach for AGB and forest parameters predictions and modeling. Ultimately, this work evaluates the potential of mosaic SAR data for AGB modeling and the fusion of optical and SAR data for peatlands discrimination. The results show that the inclusion of geostatistics texture features improved the classification accuracy of optical Landsat ETM data.
