Book Advances in Vascular Pathology 1997

Download or read book Advances in Vascular Pathology 1997 written by Andrew N. Nicolaides and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1997 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Vascular diseases with their high morbidity and mortality, are a major challenge to medical science, engaging the best minds in western medicine. Recently a concerted effort by experts in many different fields has been mounted to meet this challenge, and progress has been commensurately rapid. Major advances in non-invasive diagnosis, endovascular therapy, surgery of arterial obstructive disease and aneurysmal surgery have taken place while research into the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of vascular disease has kept pace with these advances.Advances in Vascular Pathology 1997 deals in depth with the accelerated rate of progress in these areas. The majority of its contributors are members of the Executive Board of the International Union of Angiology (IUA). They were asked to produce, at short notice, written versions of their forthcoming lectures at the meeting of the European Chapter of the IUA in Rome, 23-26 October 199

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Tertiary Lymphoid Organs TLOs Powerhouses of Disease Immunity

Download or read book Tertiary Lymphoid Organs TLOs Powerhouses of Disease Immunity written by Changjun Yin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immune system employs TLOs to elicit highly localized and forceful responses to unresolvable peripheral tissue inflammation. Current data indicate that TLOs are protective but they may also lead to collateral tissue injury and serve as nesting places to generate autoreactive lymphocytes. A better comprehension of these powerhouses of disease immunity will likely facilitate development to unprecedented and specific therapies to fight chronic inflammatory diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Recent Advances in Geriatrics, is based on the proceedings of the 8th Course of the School of Gerontology and Geriatrics held in Erice (Trapani, Italy) at the In ternational Centre for Scientific Culture "Ettore Majorana" on March 20-25, 1997. This international effort was organized jointly by professors from the University of Palermo (It aly) and from Wayne State University (Michigan, USA) as a result of a cross-cultural col laboration of several years. _ The increasing average age of the populations in industrialized countries has re sulted in increased interest in the different biological, medical, psychological, and eco nomic aspects related to the health and social care of the elderly. Physicians and health care practitioners are realizing the need for a revised approach to geriatric care. Comprising contributions of clinicians and scientists from Italy and North America, the present volume provides a multidisciplinary approach to many gerontological and geriatric problems, examined from a scientific and a practical point of view. Several of the most important aspects of the aging process - the genetics of aging, body composition modification, immunological, endocrinological, and renal physiology changes - have been addressed. Data from a multi-center Italian study on centenarians is reported, to gether with an update on clinical and pharmacological approaches to dementia syndromes and economic and social aspects related to the care of the elderly.

Book Vascular Endothelium

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461537363
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Vascular Endothelium written by John D. Catravas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the proceedings from the Advanced Study Institute on "Vascular Endothelium: Physiological Basis of Clinical Problems" which took place in Corfu, Greece in June 1990. The meeting consisted of twenty-eight lectures, most of them adapted as full length papers in this volume, as well as numerous short oral and poster communications which are abstracted and also included in alphabetical order (pages 239-302). There were ninety-six participants from ten NATO and four other European countries. The meeting was the second in as many years dealing with a specific subject in Endothelial Cell biology. Following the 1988 discussion on "Receptors and Transduction Mechanisms", the present ASI recognized and tried to deal with the increasing overlap in interest between basic scientists studying endothelial cell functions and clinicians facing problems of known or suspected endothelial pathological involvement. As with any similar effort, we opted to be selective, rather than fail by trying to be inclusive, in the subjects covered. We chose to discuss diseases, such as atherosclerosis, sepsis, ARDS and stroke, based on their relevance to endothelial cell function and urgent need for new insights into their pathogenesis and treatment. Similarly, we examined endothelial cell functions by considering their relevance to disease and their potential for elucidating important pathologies. Obviously, some areas were covered superficially or not at all; this should not distract from their importance, but rather reflect on the constraints of time and -not at all negligibly -the bias of the organizing committee.

Book Hemangiomas and Vascular Malformations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published, much new knowledge has been gained on hemangiomas and vascular malformations. This revised and updated second edition, written by worldwide leaders in the field, fully reflects this progress. Important improvements in the treatment of hemangiomas are reviewed, including the use of beta-blockers and other medical therapies as well as advances in interventional treatments and the treatment of hemangiomas in specific locations. Vascular malformations are being investigated with increasing frequency all over the world and new challenges are emerging regarding both diagnosis and treatment. This edition considers the current role of the full range of diagnostic imaging techniques –magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, nuclear medicine techniques, angiography, and phlebography. The various treatment options, including laser, interventional radiological, and surgical techniques, are then presented in detail. A further individual section is devoted to the study and treatment of lymphatic malformations and dysplasias, and a series of chapters also focus on problems in the treatment of malformations in particular locations, including the thorax and viscera. This book, in atlas format, is exceptional in providing clinically relevant information on the diagnosis and treatment of both hemangiomas and vascular malformations. It will appeal to all professionals who encounter these conditions in their daily clinical practice.
