Book excerpt: Any behavior that arouses, as swearing does, controversy, disagreement, disdain, shock, and indignation as often as it imbues passion, sincerity, intimacy, solidarity, and jocularity should be an obvious target of in-depth scholarship. Rigorous, scholarly investigation of the practice of swearing acknowledges its social and cultural significance, and allows us to discover and better understand the historical, psychological, sociological, and linguistic aspects (among others) of swearwords and swearword usage. The present volume brings together a range of themes and issues central to the existing knowledge of swearing and considers these in two key ‘new’ arenas, that is, in languages other than English, and/or in contexts and media other than spoken interaction. Many of the chapters analysed are based on large and robust collections of data, such as corpora or questionnaire responses, which allow for patterns of swearing to emerge. In other chapters, personally observed instances of swearing comprise the focus, allowing for a close analysis of the relationship between sociolinguistic context and pragmatic function. In each chapter, the cultural aspects of swearing are considered, ultimately affirming the importance of the study of swearing, and further establishing the legitimacy of swearing as a target of research.

Book excerpt: Who’s Swearing Now? represents an investigation of how people actually swear, illustrated by a collection of over 500 spontaneous swearing utterances along with their social and linguistic contexts. The book offers a solution to the controversial issue of defining swear words and swearing by limiting the investigation to the core set of words most common to previous swearing studies. This specific focus results in accurate depictions of contextualized swearing utterances. Precise frequency counts are thus enabled which, along with offensiveness ratings of contextualized and non-contextualized swearing, enable a clarification of The Swearing Paradox, referring to the phenomenon of frequently used swear words also being those which traditionally are judged to be the most offensive. The book revisits the relationship between gender and swear word usage, but considers the distribution based on the core subset of swear words, revealing similarities where others have claimed differences. Significantly, Who’s Swearing Now? considers the aspect of race with regards to swear word usage, and reveals behavioral differences between, for example, White and African American males and females with regards to word preferences, as well as social impetuses for and effects of swearing. Questionnaire and interview data supplement the swearing utterances, revealing participants’ individual credos about their own use or non-use of swear words and, interestingly, about others’ allowed or ideally prohibited use of swear words. These sets of data present thought-provoking and often entertaining statements regarding the unwritten set of rules governing swearing behavior. Who’s Swearing Now? concludes with close analyses of four recent and highly publicized incidences of public swear word usage, considered in light of the spontaneous swearing utterances, speaker and addressee variables such as gender, race and age, and perceptions of offensiveness and propriety

Book excerpt: Gender norms pervade many layers of our society, and more or less strongly influence the expectations we may have of others. Among these pre-conceptions, many linguistic patterns have been said to be representative of male or female features, like tag questions, deference, turn-taking for example. Of all the gendered linguistic characteristics, the one which may have been the most debated is that of swear words. Swearing is indeed a subject which, even when gender is not concerned, generally provokes many tensions and debates. This is partly due to what swear words are often associated to, that is, what is called “bad language”. Because of a complex interplay between social expectations and power relations, swearing has traditionally been associated with men. These kinds of association led to the creation of pre-conceived ideas stigmatizing women and men who would use a linguistic feature not generally associated with them. These preconceived ideas also fuel societal stereotypes and may impact people's standards concerning what is desirable from each gender. Moreover, swearing is often considered as an act of power and a way of affirming oneself. Thus, the fact that one gender may be perceived as more frequent users of swear words, or on the other hand as swear word eschewers, may have an impact on other qualities related to power that we would inherently attribute to one gender or the other, whether these differences are real or not. Some studies have showed that contrary to what has long been widely believed, women do not swear less frequently than men, nor do they use a drastically different register. Some even envisioned that the use of “strong” swear words by women would increase in certain contexts, specifically on social media; this seemed especially true for younger generations of users. It was even predicted that “gender equality in swearing or a reversal in gender patterns for strong swearing, will slowly become more widespread, at least in social network sites” (Thelwall, 2008: 102), such that the use of strong swear words among young women will eventually be more frequent than among (young) men. Accordingly, the swearing patterns displayed in 2008 could keep evolving for a certain category of women (especially younger ones), which would correlate with other claims, which stated that computer-mediated communication as a whole could be empowering for women. Thus, the following question arises: has the prediction made by Thelwall in 2008 been fulfilled eight years later, in a society where computer-mediated communication in the context of social media is firmly rooted in people's everyday lives? The aim of this thesis is thus twofold: first, it is to offer a better understanding of the patterns of swear word usage among women and men on social media, and second, it is to show the potential of these media as a source of data for synchronic (and possibly diachronic) sociolinguistic studies on a much larger scale. This study is based specifically on a corpus composed of just over eighteen million tweets issued by roughly 739 000 users. The corpus was populated with tweets by British users of both genders and from different age groups throughout the United Kingdom. Corpus linguistic methodology and tools have been used to address the sociolinguistic issues raised earlier. Also, because Twitter does not provide us with a direct access to the gender or the age of the users, using computer-programming methods has been necessary to be able to study these age and gender differences.This thesis hopes to advance the field of swearing research with regards both to gender and the relatively new context of social media. In so doing, it also aims to further establish the use of social media in linguistic investigation and pave the way for future studies.

I will have a look at five frequently used swearwords in the English language and evaluate those due to social features of the speaker and the addressee by using data from the BNCweb corpus. In addition to that I will either prove or disprove some of the following assumptions made by Timothy Jay and Kristin Janschewitz for the circuit of the BNCweb corpus: “Swearing is influenced by pragmatic (contextual) variables such as the conversational topic, the speaker-listener relationship, including gender, occupation, and status, and the social-physical setting of the communication with respect to whether the swearing takes place in a public or private location, one’s jurisdiction over the location, and the level of formality of the occasion.” To narrow this down, I categorize my research in four classes: context, status, gender and additionally age. Finally, I conclude whether the above-mentioned social features influence a native English speaker's disposition to swear.
