Importance is given on enabling the reader to understand the concepts and recent approaches to different areas of soil and forest ecology such as soil health, physical, chemical properties, impact of forest on soils, plant diversity, forest fragmentation, conservation and sustainable development etc. In the modern world, where the soil and forest resources are increasingly threatened, ecologist and conservationist are playing a major role in providing scientific inputs in conservation efforts. Therefore, there has been a need to compile and collate the research findings in these areas and link bio sciences research with soil and forest ecosystem conservation and sustainable development. This book entitled “Advances in Soil & Forest Research” is an attempt in this direction. The volume comprises 3 research investigations contributed by eminent scholars of various fields of soil and forest ecology. The book would be excellent references for researchers, policy makers and practitioners. About the author: Dr. Shafiqul Islam Bhuyan did his M.sc in Botany from Gauhati University and Ph.D from North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh. He is presently the Assistant Professor & Head of Department of Botany, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya, Behali, Assam. Book New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research

Download or read book New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research written by Dr. Andrew A. Oteng-Amoako and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research consists of 14 chapters divided into three sections and is authored by 48 researchers from 16 countries and all five continents. Section Whither the Use of Forest Resources, authored by 16 researchers, describes negative and positive practices in forestry. Forest is a complex habitat for man, animals, insects and micro-organisms and their activities may impact positively or negatively on the forest. This complex relationship is explained in the section Forest and Organisms Interactions, consisting of contributions made by six researchers. Development of tree plantations has been man’s response to forest degradation and deforestation caused by human, animals and natural disasters. Plantations of beech, spruce, Eucalyptus and other species are described in the last section, Amelioration of Dwindling Forest Resources Through Plantation Development, a section consisting of five papers authored by 20 researchers. New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research will appeal to forest scientists, researchers and allied professionals. It will be of interest to those who care about forest and who subscribe to the adage that the last tree dies with the last man on our planet. I recommend it to you; enjoy reading it, save the forest and save life!

Book Southern Forest Science

Download or read book Southern Forest Science written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."

Book Advances in Soil Science

Download or read book Advances in Soil Science written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of soils has taken on increased importance because a rapidly expanding population is placing demands on the soil never before experi enced. This has led to an increase in land degradation. Land degradation is one of the most severe problems facing mankind. Volume 11 of Advances in Soil Science was devoted entirely to this critical area of soil science. The editors of that volume, R. Lal and B.A. Stewart, defined soil degradation as the decline in soil quality caused by its misuse by humans. They further stated that soil degradation is a major concern for at least two reasons. First, it undermines the productive capacity of an ecosystem. Second, it affects global climate through alterations in water and energy balances and disruptions in cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and other elements. Through its impact on agricultural productivity and environment, soil deg radation leads to political and social instability, enhanced rate of deforesta tion, intensive use of marginal and fragile lands, accelerated runoff and soil erosion, pollution of natural waters, and emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In fact, soil degradation affects the very fabric of mankind.

Book Advances in Forest Management under Global Change

Download or read book Advances in Forest Management under Global Change written by Ling Zhang and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in forest management will enhance the sustainable development of human society, and should be focused on. Under the context of global change, soil nutrients, especially nitrogen, should be carefully managed and monitored in plantations experiencing intensive nitrogen input, and forests with exotic plant invasion disturbance, considering its substantial contribution to global nitrous oxide. One negative effect of global change could be loss of biodiversity, which could be maintained by forest management. In addition, advanced technologies should also be developed to prevent fire in forests considering its increased frequency. Importantly, policies and technologies should also be developed for advanced forest management, such as deep learning in plant disease prevention, and quantitative strategic planning matrix in management of forest conservation.
