This aim of course cannot be fulfilled in a single volume, but it can be met, at least to a large degree, in a continuing series. In this context we encourage those readers who are pleased with the offerings in this volume to consult appropriate chapters in earlier volumes of the series. The term psychological assessment, as used in this series, encom passes all of the various techniques - tests, rating scales, interview schedules, surveys, direct observational methods, and psychophysiol ogical procedures - that are employed in scientifically based practice and research to provide an improved understanding of individual per sons, groups, or environmental settings. Thus, the whole field of assess ment is taken as the proper area of concern for the series. This includes both what are sometimes called traditional assessment and behavioral assessment, as well as approaches not typically classed in either of these categories.

According to Anne Anastasi, The decade of the 1980's has been a period of unusual advances in ,psychological testing. Technological progress, theoretical sophistication, and increasing pro fessional responsibility are all evident in the fast-moving events in this field (A. Anastasi, Psychological Testing, Sixth Edition. New York: Macmillan, 1988). On the psychometric front, advances in topics such as item response theory, criterion-referenced measurement, generalizability theory,· analy sis of covariance structures, and validity generalization are reshaping the ways that ability and achievement tests are constructed and evaluated, and that test scores are interpreted. But \Jsychometric advances, as substantial and important as they have been, are only a fraction of the major changes in the field of testing. Today, for example, the computer is radically chang ing the ways in which tests are constructed, administered, and scored. Computers are being used to administer tests "adaptively." That is, the sequence of questions an examinee is administered depends upon his or her performance on earlier administered items in the test. Tests are "adapted" to the ability levels of the examinees who are being assessed. One result is shorter tests with little or no loss in measurement precision. Computers are also being used to store or bank test items. Later, items of interest can be selected, and the computer is used to print copies of the test.

It has also had a major impact on human resource management (HR) processes, and it has transformed the way that we recruit, select, motivate, and retain employees (Gueutal & Stone, 2005; Kavanagh, Thite, & Johnson, 2015). For example, some estimates indicated that 100 % of large organizations now use web-based recruiting (Sierra-Cedar, 2016-2017), and over half of the training conducted in America is delivered using technology-based methods (American Society for Training and Development, 2015). Results of a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) (2002) revealed that technology is one of the major drivers of change in today’s HR departments. In spite of the increased use of technology in the field of HR, relatively little research has examined the acceptance and effectiveness of electronic human resource management (eHRM) methods. As a consequence, practitioners are implementing these new systems without the benefit of research. Thus, the primary purpose of this issue is to review the results of research on a number of important eHRM practices including e-recruitment, e-selection, gamification, e- socialization, e-learning, and e-performance management. It also considers how technology can be used to manage task-based contingent workers, and examines the problems associated with cyberdeviance in organizations. The chapters in this series should be extremely beneficial for HR researchers and practitioners who are employing these new systems.
