Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whipple's Animal Analysis: A Method of Teaching Zoology; To Which Is Added an Appendix, Containing Directions for Forming a School Cabinet A Few teachers of Zoology, favorably situated, are able to get their pupils to study animals instead of books; the majority, although theoretically opposed to an almost exclusive use of books, practically find no other way in which to secure regular and constant work from their classes. For the purpose of obviating this difficulty, the "Analysis of Animals" has been prepared, and it is believed that, if rightly used, it will enable teachers satisfactorily to combine the study of books and the study of nature. With most pupils the difficulty is, that they do not know how to study or what to observe, and, if they are set at work upon specimens without a guide, they turn them over aimlessly for awhile, and then, discouraged with this profitless proceeding, beg to be allowed to return to the safe and familiar shelter of a text-book. When the teacher can spend his time with the class during their study hours, stimulating by questions and aiding by suggestions, all this may be changed; but how few can spare time and strength for very much of such work! The "Analysis of Animals" supplies the questions, shows the pupils what characteristics to look for, and affords convenient means of testing the amount and quality of work done. The author offers this plan as a step in advance, but as one step only, and hopes that his fellow teachers, who may use it, will freely communicate to him objections and difficulties, as well as suggestions for its improvement. How to use the "Analysis." Beginning in the usual way, the class learns somewhat thoroughly the characteristics of one branch, e. g., vertebrates, noticing the other branches briefly. Then one class, say mammals, is studied, some comparison being made with other classes of the same branch. Then two or three orders with their prominent families, and a few of their genera and species are mastered. Book Biologists and the Promise of American Life

Download or read book Biologists and the Promise of American Life written by Philip J. Pauly and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorers, evolutionists, eugenicists, sexologists, and high school biology teachers--all have contributed to the prominence of the biological sciences in American life. In this book, Philip Pauly weaves their stories together into a fascinating history of biology in America over the last two hundred years. Beginning with the return of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1806, botanists and zoologists identified science with national culture, linking their work to continental imperialism and the creation of an industrial republic. Pauly examines this nineteenth-century movement in local scientific communities with national reach: the partnership of Asa Gray and Louis Agassiz at Harvard University, the excitement of work at the Smithsonian Institution and the Geological Survey, and disputes at the Agriculture Department over the continent's future. He then describes the establishment of biology as an academic discipline in the late nineteenth century, and the retreat of life scientists from the problems of American nature. The early twentieth century, however, witnessed a new burst of public-oriented activity among biologists. Here Pauly chronicles such topics as the introduction of biology into high school curricula, the efforts of eugenicists to alter the "breeding" of Americans, and the influence of sexual biology on Americans' most private lives. Throughout much of American history, Pauly argues, life scientists linked their study of nature with a desire to culture--to use intelligence and craft to improve American plants, animals, and humans. They often disagreed and frequently overreached, but they sought to build a nation whose people would be prosperous, humane, secular, and liberal. Life scientists were significant participants in efforts to realize what Progressive Era oracle Herbert Croly called "the promise of American life." Pauly tells their story in its entirety and explains why now, in a society that is rapidly returning to a complex ethnic mix similar to the one that existed for a hundred years prior to the Cold War, it is important to reconnect with the progressive creators of American secular culture.

Book Modernism s Visible Hand

Download or read book Modernism s Visible Hand written by Michael Osman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking history of the confluence of regulatory thinking and building design in the United States What is the origin of “room temperature”? When did food become considered fresh or not fresh? Why do we think management makes things more efficient? The answers to these questions share a history with architecture and regulation at the turn of the twentieth century. This pioneering technological and architectural history of environmental control systems during the Gilded Age begins with the premise that regulation—of temperature, the economy, even the freshness of food—can be found in the guts of buildings. From cold storage and scientific laboratories to factories, these infrastructures first organized life in a way we now call “modern.” Drawing on a range of previously unexplored archival resources, Michael Osman examines the increasing role of environmental technologies in building design from the late nineteenth century. He shows how architects appropriated and subsumed the work of engineers as thermostats, air handlers, and refrigeration proliferated. He argues that this change was closely connected to broader cultural and economic trends in management and the regulation of risk. The transformation shaped the evolution of architectural modernism and the development of the building as a machine. Rather than assume the preexisting natural order of things, participants in regulation—including architects, scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers, managers, economists, government employees, and domestic reformers—became entangled in managing the errors, crises, and risks stemming from the nation’s unprecedented growth. Modernism’s Visible Hand not only broadens our conception of how industrial capitalism shaped the built environment but is also vital to understanding the role of design in dealing with ecological crises today.
