Book excerpt: (Opening Address of 13th ESLAB Symposium) With GEOS and ISEE occupying a major part of the ESA scientific programme it was clear several years ago that a 'natural' basis for the 1978 ESLAB Annual Symposium would be the early data from these two spacecraft. During the 1976 meeting of the European Geophysical Society in Amsterdam it became apparent to me that a much wider community was interested and that in particular Working Group 2 of COSPAR was considering a GEOS session during its 1978 meeting here in Innsbruck. This was of course as it ought to be because GEOS had been adopted as the reference spacecraft for the International Magnetospheric Study. After some discussions with COSPAR and with the organizers of the STP Symposium which was held here last week we felt that in the interest of customer relations and following good common sense we should give up some of our independence in 1978 and merge our Symposium with COSPAR. I would gratefully acknowledge the co-operation of COSPAR's Working Group 2 chairman and vice-chairman, the active support of the President of COSPAR and the 'gentleman's agreement' with the STP programme committee which arranged that the new ISEE and GEOS results were routed to this Symposium rather than to the STP. I have talked about how we came to have this joint Symposium. Perhaps I should tell you too how we came close to having no Symposium.

Book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere

Download or read book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere written by C.S. Deehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ordered collection of tutorial lectures on the physical processes in the polar upper atmosphere given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "The Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere" held at Lillehammer, Norway, May 5-16, 1980. The polar cap is an important part of the high latitude atmosphere not only because of circulation and horizontal trans port in the neutral atmosphere and convection in the ionosphere, but also because of its unique energy sources and sinks. In addition, solar wind plasma is led into-the upper atmosphere by the geomagnetic field at the poles, and the polar cap is, as stated by Tutorial Leader Roederer in this volume, "the place where outer space meets earth". The atmosphere at lower latitudes is well-known to the ground-based observer, and the advent of satellite observations was simply the beginning of a new perspective. The exploration of the atmosphere at polar latitudes, however, proceeded in quite the opposite manner, and satellite maps of the polar caps may be compared with a relatively meagre set of ground-based data. Recent efforts to extend the polar observations from the ground have resulted in the need for a review of the physical principles and processes occurring in the polar upper atmosphere. The interdisciplinary nature of these efforts led to the emphasis here on a tutorial program.

Download or read book COSPAR Space Research written by M. J. Rycroft and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cospar Space Research, Volume XIX covers the proceedings of the Open Meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 21st Plenary Meeting of COSPAR, held in Innsbruck, Austria, from May 29 to June 10, 1978, focusing on the developments in space research. The contributions concentrate on remote sensing, middle atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, and materials science in space. The selection first offers information on global development of space research, including weather and climate, material sciences in space, planets, sun, stars, magnetosphere, and high energy astrophysics. The book then takes a look at the spectral characteristics of surface phenomena and their impact on the design of an optoelectronic multispectral system; use of weather satellite data in the evaluation of water resources; and atmospheric and surface radiation balance as identified from satellite data. The compilation discusses the assimilation of non-simultaneous satellite and conventional meteorological data using statistical weights; annual variation and variability of meteorological parameters in the stratosphere and mesosphere; and physical properties affecting the existence of small particles in the mesosphere. The book also focuses on the determination of density scale-height profiles, geomagnetic effects in the exosphere, and gravity waves and tidal winds in the equatorial thermosphere. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in space research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1989 Crafoord Symposium organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The scientific field for the Crafoord Prize of 1989 was decided in 1988 by the Academy to be Magnetospheric Physics. On September 27,1989 the Academy awarded the 1989 Crafoord Prize to Professor J. A. Van Allen, Iowa City, USA "for his pioneer work in space research, in particular for the discovery of the high energy charged particles that are trapped in the Earth's magnetic field and form the radiation belts -often called the Van Allen belts - around the Earth". The subject for the Crafoord Symposium, which was held on September 28-29 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, was Magnetospheric Physics, Achievements and Prospects. Some seventy of the world's leading scientists in magnetospheric physics (see list of participants) were invited to the Symposium. The program contained only invited papers. After the ?resentation of the Crafoord Prize Laureate, Prof. J . A. Van Allen, and his specially invited lecture: "Active Experiments in Magnetospheric Physics" follows in these proceedings two papers on the achievements of magnetospheric research hitherto. The main part of the proceedings (8 papers) deal with the main theme of the Symposium: How we shall carry on magnetospheric research in the future. The Symposium was organized by five members of the Academy representing the field of space physics: Lars Block (Stockholm), Rolf Bostrom (Uppsala), Kerstin Fredga (Stockholm), Carl-Gunne Fiilthammar (Stockholm) and Bengt Hultqvist (Kiruna, Chairman).

Book Progress in Solar Terrestrial Physics

Download or read book Progress in Solar Terrestrial Physics written by J.G. Roederer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar-Terrestrial Physics: The Study of Mankind's Newest Frontier Solar-Terrestrial Physics (STP) has been around for 100 years. However, it only became known as a scientific discipline under that name when the physical domain studied by STP became accessible to in situ observation and measurement by man or man-made instruments. Indeed, it was STP that provided the initial scientific driving force for the launching of man-made devices into extra-terrestrial space during the International Geophysical Year - aided of course by the genetically engrained drive of humans to expand their frontiers of knowledge, influence and dominance. We may define STP as the discipline dealing with the variable components of solar corpuscular and electromagnetic emissions, the physical processes governing their sources and their propagation through interplanetary space, and the physical-chemical processes related to their interaction with the Earth and other bodies in interplanetary space. Much of STP deals with fully-or partially-ionized gas flows and related energy, momentum and mass transfer in what now appears as one single system made up of distinct but strongly interacting parts, reaching from the photosphere out to the confines of the heliopause, engulfing planets and other solar system bodies, and dipping deep into 6 the Earth's atmosphere.
