Book Integrated Management of Insect Pests

Download or read book Integrated Management of Insect Pests written by Marcos Kogan and published by Burleigh Dodds Agricultural Sc. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews current developments in integrated pest management (IPM), focussing on insect pests. It discusses advances in understanding species and landscape ecology on which IPM is founded, as well as advances in cultural, physical and biological methods of control. The first part of the book reviews current developments in understanding insect species, community and agroecosystems ecology. This understanding provides the foundation for developing effective IPM programmes which work with ecosystems to keep pests from reaching damaging levels. Parts 2 and 3 then review advances in cultural, physical and, in particular, biological methods of control. Chapters cover developments in classical, conservation and augmentative biological control as well as the use of entomopathogenic fungi, viruses, nematodes and semiochemicals. The final parts of the book summarise current research on monitoring pesticide use as well as emerging classes of biopesticides. Edited by pioneers in IPM techniques, and including contributions from some of most eminent experts in the field, this will be a standard reference for the IPM research community, crop scientists, entomologists, companies involved in pesticides and crop pest management as well as government agencies monitoring and regulating pest management in agriculture.

Book Integrated Pest Management for Citrus

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management for Citrus written by Mary Louise Flint and published by Agriculture & Natural Resources. This book was released on 1991 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this manual is to help growers and pest control advisers apply the principles of integrated pest management, or IPM, to California citrus crops. IPM emphasizes preventive methods that provide economical, long-term solutions to pest problems. Pesticides are used only when they are necessary to prevent imminent crop loss or damage; thus IPM strategies minimize hazards to human health and the environment. Use this book to plan an IPM strategy for your orchard. The introductory chapters on citrus development, growth requirements, general management practices, and monitoring tools provide the background upon which the management guidelines in the pest sections are based. The introductions to the insect, weed, disease, nematode, and vertebrate chapters tell you where and when major pests occur. Detailed descriptions and photographs of pests and damage symptoms are presented later in each chapter. These sections also discuss how you can enhance natural control factors, design a monitoring program, and use control actions most effectively"--Page 6-7.

Book Integrated Management of Arthropod Pests and Insect Borne Diseases

Download or read book Integrated Management of Arthropod Pests and Insect Borne Diseases written by Aurelio Ciancio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the last volume of the IPMD series. It aims, in a multi-disciplinary approach, at reviewing and discussing recent advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection and integrated pest and disease management. This last effort deals with management of arthropods, and is organized with a first section on biological control in citrus orchards, a second one on advanced and integrated technologies for insect pest management and a last section, dealing with mites and their biological control. A wide and exaustive literature already covers several aspects of chemical or biological control of insects and mites, but there is still a need for a more holistic vision of management, accounting for different problems and solutions, as they are applied or developed, in different regions and cropping systems, worldwide. In this series we attempted to fill this gap, providing an informative coverage for a broad range of agricultural systems and situations.

Book Biointensive Integrated Pest Management in Horticultural Ecosystems

Download or read book Biointensive Integrated Pest Management in Horticultural Ecosystems written by P. Parvatha Reddy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through ‘Green Revolution’ in late 1960s, India achieved self-sufficiency in food production, but still the country has not achieved self-sufficiency in production of horticultural crops. Most of the growth in food production during the green revolution period is attributed to the use of higher levels of fertilizers and pesticides which are continuing to destroy stable traditional ecosystems. The challenge before the crop protection scientist is to increase yields from the existing land without harming the environment and resource base. This can be achieved by adopting eco-friendly Biointensive Integrated Pest Management (BIPM) strategy. BIPM incorporates ecological and economic factors into agricultural system design and decision making, and addresses public concerns about environmental quality and food safety. The benefits of implementing BIPM can include reduced chemical input costs, reduced on-farm and off-farm environmental impacts, and more effective and sustainable pest management. An ecology-based IPM has the potential of decreasing inputs of fuel, machinery, and synthetic chemicals-all of which are energy intensive and increasingly costly in terms of financial and environmental impact. Such reductions will benefit the grower and society. The present book deals with the most recent biointensive integrated approaches for pest management utilizing components such as bioagents [predators, parasitoids and pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses)], botanicals (biofumigation, oil cakes, FYM, compost, crop residues, green manuring and other organic amendments), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, physical methods (hot water treatment of planting material, soil solarization), cultural methods (crop rotation, summer ploughing, fallowing, intercropping, pruning, mulching, spacing, planting date, trap cropping, etc.), biorational chemicals (pheromones) and resistant cultivars. This book can serve as a useful reference to policy makers, research and extension workers, practicing farmers and students. The material can also be used for teaching post-graduate courses.
