Book excerpt: This volume presents the published Proceedings of the joint meeting of GUM92 and the 7th International Workshop on Statistical Modelling, held in Munich, Germany from 13 to 17 July 1992. The meeting aimed to bring together researchers interested in the development and applications of generalized linear modelling in GUM and those interested in statistical modelling in its widest sense. This joint meeting built upon the success of previous workshops and GUM conferences. Previous GUM conferences were held in London and Lancaster, and a joint GUM Conference/4th Modelling Workshop was held in Trento. (The Proceedings of previous GUM conferences/Statistical Modelling Workshops are available as numbers 14 , 32 and 57 of the Springer Verlag series of Lecture Notes in Statistics). Workshops have been organized in Innsbruck, Perugia, Vienna, Toulouse and Utrecht. (Proceedings of the Toulouse Workshop appear as numbers 3 and 4 of volume 13 of the journal Computational Statistics and Data Analysis). Much statistical modelling is carried out using GUM, as is apparent from many of the papers in these Proceedings. Thus the Programme Committee were also keen on encouraging papers which addressed problems which are not only of practical importance but which are also relevant to GUM or other software development. The Programme Committee requested both theoretical and applied papers. Thus there are papers in a wide range of practical areas, such as ecology, breast cancer remission and diabetes mortality, banking and insurance, quality control, social mobility, organizational behaviour.

Book excerpt: This volume of Lecture Notes in Statistics consists of the published proceedings of the first international conference to be held on the topic of generalised linear models. This conference was held from 13 - 15 September 1982 at the Polytechnic of North London and marked an important stage in the development and expansion of the GLIM system. The range of the new system, tentatively named Prism, is here outlined by Bob Baker. Further sections of the volume are devoted to more detailed descriptions of the new facilities, including information on the two different numerical methods now available. Most of the data analyses in this volume are carried out using the GLIM system but this is, of course, not necessary. There are other ways of analysing generalised linear models and Peter Green here discusses the many attractive features of APL, including its ability to analyse generalised linear models. Later sections of the volume cover other invited and contributed papers on the theory and application of generalised linear models. Included amongst these is a paper by Murray Aitkin, proposing a unified approach to statistical modelling through direct likelihood inference, and a paper by Daryl Pregibon showing how GLIM can be programmed to carry out score tests. A paper by Joe Whittaker extends the recent discussion of the relationship between conditional independence and log-linear models and John Hinde considers the introduction of an independent random variable into a linear model to allow for unexplained variation in Poisson data.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the published proceedings of the lOth International Workshop on Statistical Modelling, to be held in Innsbruck, Austria from 10 to 14 July, 1995. This workshop marks an important anniversary. The inaugural workshop in this series also took place in Innsbruck in 1986, and brought together a small but enthusiastic group of thirty European statisticians interested in statistical modelling. The workshop arose out of two G LIM conferences in the U. K. in London (1982) and Lancaster (1985), and from a num ber of short courses organised by Murray Aitkin and held at Lancaster in the early 1980s, which attracted many European statisticians interested in Generalised Linear Modelling. The inaugural workshop in Innsbruck con centrated on GLMs and was characterised by a number of features - a friendly and supportive academic atmosphere, tutorial sessions and invited speakers presenting new developments in statistical modelling, and a very well organised social programme. The academic programme allowed plenty of time for presentation and for discussion, and made available copies of all papers beforehand. Over the intervening years, the workshop has grown substantially, and now regularly attracts over 150 participants. The scope of the workshop is now much broader, reflecting the growth in the subject of statistical modelling over ten years. The elements ofthe first workshop, however, are still present, and participants always find the meetings relevant and stimulating.

It was designed for ap proximation of possibly irregular functions and surfaces and was successfully applied in data compression, turbulence analysis, image and signal process ing. Five years ago wavelet theory progressively appeared to be a power ful framework for nonparametric statistical problems. Efficient computa tional implementations are beginning to surface in this second lustrum of the nineties. This book brings together these three main streams of wavelet theory. It presents the theory, discusses approximations and gives a variety of statistical applications. It is the aim of this text to introduce the novice in this field into the various aspects of wavelets. Wavelets require a highly interactive computing interface. We present therefore all applications with software code from an interactive statistical computing environment. Readers interested in theory and construction of wavelets will find here in a condensed form results that are somewhat scattered around in the research literature. A practioner will be able to use wavelets via the available software code. We hope therefore to address both theory and practice with this book and thus help to construct bridges between the different groups of scientists. This te. xt grew out of a French-German cooperation (Seminaire Paris Berlin, Seminar Berlin-Paris). This seminar brings together theoretical and applied statisticians from Berlin and Paris. This work originates in the first of these seminars organized in Garchy, Burgundy in 1994.

Book excerpt: The present lecture notes describe stochastic epidemic models and methods for their statistical analysis. Our aim is to present ideas for such models, and methods for their analysis; along the way we make practical use of several probabilistic and statistical techniques. This will be done without focusing on any specific disease, and instead rigorously analyzing rather simple models. The reader of these lecture notes could thus have a two-fold purpose in mind: to learn about epidemic models and their statistical analysis, and/or to learn and apply techniques in probability and statistics. The lecture notes require an early graduate level knowledge of probability and They introduce several techniques which might be new to students, but our statistics. intention is to present these keeping the technical level at a minlmum. Techniques that are explained and applied in the lecture notes are, for example: coupling, diffusion approximation, random graphs, likelihood theory for counting processes, martingales, the EM-algorithm and MCMC methods. The aim is to introduce and apply these techniques, thus hopefully motivating their further theoretical treatment. A few sections, mainly in Chapter 5, assume some knowledge of weak convergence; we hope that readers not familiar with this theory can understand the these parts at a heuristic level. The text is divided into two distinct but related parts: modelling and estimation.

Thus about a third of the papers in this volume are outside the GLIM framework. The Programme Committee specifically requested non-theoretical papers in addition to considering theoretical contributions. Thus there are papers in a wide range of practical areas, such as radio spectral occupancy, comparison of birthweights, intervals between births, accidents of railway workers, genetics, demography, medical trials, the social sciences and insurance. A wide range of theoretical developments are discussed, for example, overdispersion, non-exponential family modelling, novel approaches to analysing contingency tables, random effects models, Kalman Filtering, model checking and extensions of Wedderburn's theoretical underpinning of GLMs.

The distinguished speakers lauded Peter Huber a hard and fair mathematician, a cooperative and stimulating colleague, and an inspiring and helpful teacher. The Festkolloquium was surrounded with a musical program by the Univer 2 sity's Brass Ensemble. The subsequent Workshop "Robust Statistics, Data Analysis and Computer Intensive Methods" in Schloss Thurnau, Friday until Sunday, June 9-12, was organized about the areas in statistics that Peter Huber himself has markedly shaped. In the time since the conference, most of the contributions could be edited for this volume-a late birthday present-that may give a new impetus to further research in these fields.
