Book Underground Engineering for Sustainable Urban Development

Download or read book Underground Engineering for Sustainable Urban Development written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, the underground has provided humans refuge, useful resources, physical support for surface structures, and a place for spiritual or artistic expression. More recently, many urban services have been placed underground. Over this time, humans have rarely considered how underground space can contribute to or be engineered to maximize its contribution to the sustainability of society. As human activities begin to change the planet and population struggle to maintain satisfactory standards of living, placing new infrastructure and related facilities underground may be the most successful way to encourage or support the redirection of urban development into sustainable patterns. Well maintained, resilient, and adequately performing underground infrastructure, therefore, becomes an essential part of sustainability, but much remains to be learned about improving the sustainability of underground infrastructure itself. At the request of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Research Council (NRC) conducted a study to consider sustainable underground development in the urban environment, to identify research needed to maximize opportunities for using underground space, and to enhance understanding among the public and technical communities of the role of underground engineering in urban sustainability. Underground Engineering for Sustainable Urban Development explains the findings of researchers and practitioners with expertise in geotechnical engineering, underground design and construction, trenchless technologies, risk assessment, visualization techniques for geotechnical applications, sustainable infrastructure development, life cycle assessment, infrastructure policy and planning, and fire prevention, safety and ventilation in the underground. This report is intended to inform a future research track and will be of interest to a broad audience including those in the private and public sectors engaged in urban and facility planning and design, underground construction, and safety and security.

Book Underground Urbanism

Download or read book Underground Urbanism written by Elizabeth Reynolds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the streets of your city? Do you picture, in isolation, a series of train tunnels and pipes? Or perhaps the foundations of tall buildings that lie scattered, like icebergs, beneath the surface? As our cities grow up, out, and down, it is time we better understood how the different layers of these complex urban environments relate to one another. Underground Urbanism seeks to provide a new perspective on our cities, and consider how this might be used to engage more positively with them. So, tip your cities upside down to have a closer look, and let us rethink them from (below) the ground, up.

Book Underground Spaces

Download or read book Underground Spaces written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a strongly held belief that population growth and the demand for better accommodation and leisure facilities, combined with a desire to improve the landscape, will result in the need to develop more underground spaces. This phenomenon, which started in countries subjected to extreme climates, is now becoming more widespread. Underground spaces are being utilized for a wide diversity of needs. They range from classical excavations to subway constructions; underground sports halls; power stations; waste repositories; underground cities, and many others. Their construction techniques are also varied, from open-air excavations to newly developed injection methods. The response of the underground structures on the imposed loadings depends on a number of parameters that sometimes are too complex or not fully understood, resulting in budget overruns or even failures that lead to loss of property or life. Such uncertain cases need to be addressed and engineers should be able to accurately predict the construction's performance throughout its construction and service life. The First International Conference on Underground Spaces discusses not only structural and environmental material characterization aspects but also the trends regarding the utilization of underground spaces. This book contains papers presented at the Meeting, and covers a wide range of topics including: Use of underground space for industry; Underground power stations; Toxic and nuclear waste repositories; Energy underground reservoirs; Underground sewerage plants; Waste storage and management; Road and railway tunnels; Utility tunnels; Fire defence; Defence against terrorist attacks.

Book Underground Space Design

Download or read book Underground Space Design written by Raymond L. Sterling and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1993-01-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground space development may be one of the most significant was to contend with urban predicaments such as congestion, lack of open space, and aging infrastructures. However, designers must consider whether or not people will be willing to live and work in what could be perceived as inhospitable environments. Should people be required to work in underground facilities, Or should underground space be used solely for mechanical or transit services and low-occupancy functions such as storage? What must designers do to create subsurface spaces that will avoid or alleviate the psychological and physiological problems associated with being underground? Underground Space Design is the first comprehensive book on subsurface space utilization throughout the world. The authors supply a complete overview of the entire range of underground uses by reflecting on the past, present, and future of underground development. Underground Space Design is the result of a five-year joint research study by the Underground Space Center at the University of Minnesota and the Shimizu Institute of Technology in Japan. This thorough, scholarly, and practical source offers extensive coverage of the relevant topics including: * an analysis of current underground land use * the future of underground development * comprehensive set of classifications * a summary of existing research on psychological issues * exterior and entrance design patterns * layout and spatial configuration patterns * interior design patterns * methods of lighting * life safety design patterns Elaborately designed and illustrated, this book is the first complete source to present the broad range of underground design and uses, making it an ideal reference for architects, interior designers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, city planners, developers, and environmental psychologists. Underground Space Design is also an excellent introduction to the field, precisely serving the needs of students and other professionals.
