Book Advances in Biophysical Chemistry Volume 5

Download or read book Advances in Biophysical Chemistry Volume 5 written by Bush and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-01-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Biophysical Chemistry, Volume 5, provides reviews of important topics in physical and structural biochemistry. The volume begins with a review of the chemical reactivity of DNA and its relationship to the dynamic nature of DNA conformation and its dependence on base sequence. The underlying chemistry has become extremely important to many researchers who use a host of chemical "footprinting" techniques to study biologically relevant complexes of DNA. This is followed by separate chapters that cover an innovative application of fluorescence energy transfer to investigate the dynamics of complex glycopeptides; the NMR of cations which bind to DNA, providing a picture of DNA conformation and dynamics which is complementary to that provided by 1H NMR spectroscopy; the use of NMR to study electron transfer reactions between cytochrome c peroxidase and cytochrome c; methods for analysis of data on O2 binding by hemoglobin; and experimental methods for obtaining data on protein association.

Book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

Download or read book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry written by J. A. V. Butler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Volume 7 focuses on the applications of physical or physicochemical ideas and methods to biological problems, including the use of isotopes to investigate metabolic processes. Other subjects discussed in detail are the electric organs of fishes; the thermodynamics of agglutination of red cells; muscle structure and function; and the structure of bone. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a review of the mechanisms of discharge of electric organs in fish in the contexts of general and comparative electrophysiology, paying particular attention to synaptic excitability and the involvement of several electrogenic components in the reflex discharge. The evolution of electric organs in fish is also discussed. The following chapters explore the thermodynamics of isohemagglutinins; use of labeled plasma proteins to study nutritional problems; use of isotopes to analyze intermediary metabolism; and X-crystal analysis of bone. The final two chapters are devoted to muscle structure and theories of contraction, chloroplast structure, and energy conversion in photosynthesis. This volume will be of interest to biophysicists, physicists, and physical chemists working with biological materials.

Book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

Download or read book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry written by J. A. V. Butler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Volume 12, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in biophysics and biological chemistry. The book begins with a study on cell division synchronization. This is followed by separate chapters on the biology and function of the nucleolus; the nature of ribosomes and their involvement in protein synthesis; taste receptor stimulation; and the various methods developed for quantitative estimation of the amount of dye deposited in a stained preparation as well as some of the associated theoretical and practical implications. Subsequent chapters deal with the preparation, fractionation, physical properties, analysis, and functions of histones; and the use of tritium labelled DNA precursors in autoradiography.

Book excerpt: Biophysical chemistry is one of the most interesting interdisciplinary research fields. Some of its different subjects have been intensively studied for decades. Now the field attracts not only scientists from chemistry, physics, and biology backgrounds but also those from medicine, pharmacy, and other sciences. We aimed to start this version of the book Biophysical Chemistry from advanced principles, as we include some of the most advanced subject matter, such as advanced topics in catalysis applications (first section) and therapeutic applications (second section). This led us to limit our selection to only chapters with high standards, therefore there are only six chapters, divided into two sections. We have assumed that the interested readers are familiar with the fundamentals of some advanced topics in mathematics such as integration, differentiation, and calculus and have some knowledge of organic and physical chemistry, biology, and pharmacy. We hope that the book will be valuable to graduate and postdoctoral students with the requisite background, and by some advanced researchers active in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy, and other sciences.

Book Biophysical Chemistry

Download or read book Biophysical Chemistry written by Dagmar Klostermeier and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biophysical Chemistry explores the concepts of physical chemistry and molecular structure that underlie biochemical processes. Ideally suited for undergraduate students and scientists with backgrounds in physics, chemistry or biology, it is also equally accessible to students and scientists in related fields as the book concisely describes the fundamental aspects of biophysical chemistry, and puts them into a biochemical context. This second edition has been fully updated throughout with novel techniques, with a new chapter on advances in cryo-electron microscopy and exciting new content throughout on big data techniques, structural bioinformatics, systems biology and interaction networks, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. The book is organized in four parts, covering thermodynamics, kinetics, molecular structure and stability, and biophysical methods. Cross-references within and between these parts emphasize common themes and highlight recurrent principles. End of chapter problems illustrate the main points explored and their relevance for biochemistry, enabling students to apply their knowledge and to transfer it to laboratory projects"--

Book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

Download or read book Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry written by J. A. V. Butler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Volume 9 reviews developments in biophysics and biophysical chemistry and covers topics such as the kinetics of reactions between hemoglobin and gases; the hydrodynamics of the arterial circulation; visual pigments in humans and animals and their relation to seeing; and gradient centrifugation of cell particles. The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy in certain mechanoreceptors is also discussed. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an overview of the general properties of hemoglobin and its reactions with gases, and how such reactions are affected by temperature. The intermediate compound theory and the combination of sheep hemoglobin with carbon monoxide are also considered. The following chapters explore the diffusion and simultaneous chemical reaction velocity in hemoglobin solutions and red cell suspensions; the hydrodynamic aspects of the arterial circulation; determination of molecular dimensions from light scattering data; and the relation of receptor potentials to the activity of complex mechanoreceptor organs containing hair cells. The final chapter is devoted to the theory and applications of the gradient centrifugation of cell particles. This volume will be of interest to both biophysicists and biochemists.
