The side-by-side comparison of all the adrenergic receptors (a1, a2, and b) provides the reader with an excellent survey of the field, including the rationale for designing better drugs to control blood pressure and heart function.

Book Adrenergic Receptor Protocols

    Book Details:
  • Author : Curtis A. Machida
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-02-03
  • ISBN : 1592596843
  • Pages : 563 pages

Download or read book Adrenergic Receptor Protocols written by Curtis A. Machida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-03 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrenergic receptors are important modulators in the sympathetic c- trol of various metabolic processes in the central and peripheral nervous s- tems. These receptors are localized at multiple sites throughout the central nervous system (CNS) and serve as important regulators of CNS-mediated behavior and neural functions, including mood, memory, neuroendocrine c- trol, and stimulation of autonomic function. Adrenergic Receptor Protocols consists of 35 chapters dealing with va- ous aspects of adrenergic receptor analyses, including the use of genetic, RNA, protein expression, transactivator, second messenger, immunocytochemical, electrophysiological, transgenic, and in situ hybridization approaches. This volume details the use of various methods to examine the adrenergic receptor system, using aspects of the genetic flow of information as a guide (DNA? RNA ? transactivator ? protein expression ? second messenger analyses ? cellular analyses ? transgenic whole animal approaches). Adrenergic Receptor Protocols displays step-by-step methods for s- cessful replication of experimental procedures, and would be useful for both experienced investigators and newcomers in the field, including those beg- ning graduate study or undergoing postdoctoral training. The Notes section contained in each chapter provides valuable troubleshooting guides to help develop working protocols for your laboratory. With Adrenergic Receptor Protocols, it has been my intent to develop a comprehensive collection of modern molecular methods for analyzing adrenergic receptors. I would like to thank the many chapter authors for their contributions.

Book excerpt: Advances in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Volume l: Receptors contains the proceedings of the 7th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Paris, France, in 1978. The papers explore advances in the understanding of receptors, their pharmacology, and their therapeutic applications. Topics covered range from opiate receptors and their endogenous ligands to membrane receptors in eukaryotic cells. Applications of binding to pharmacological research are also discussed. This volume is comprised of 29 chapters and opens with an overview of the chemistry and biochemistry of pituitary endorphins, paying particular attention to the correlation between the analgesic potency, receptor binding properties, preferred solution conformation, and metabolic stability of natural and synthetic opioid peptides. The reader is then introduced to the biosynthesis and release of the enkephalins; opiate receptors and their endogenous ligands; denervation supersensitivity in skeletal muscle; and biochemistry and physiology of dopaminergic and beta-adrenergic receptors in mammalian central nervous system. The following chapters explore the role of guanylnucleotides in the regulation of hormonally stimulated adenylate cyclase; interactions of cholera toxin with cell membranes; problems in studying hormone receptor binding; and the mechanism of action of anti-hormones. This book will be of interest to practitioners in biosciences, pharmacology, physiology, and medicine.

Download or read book Receptor Regulation written by R. J. Lefkowitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROBERT J. LEFKOWITZ, M. D. Receptor Regulation (Receptors and Recognition, Series B, Volume 13) Edited by R. J. Lefkowitz Published in 1981 by Chapman and Hall, 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE © 1981 Chapman and Hall The study of hormone and drug receptors has become one of the most excit ing and rapidly moving areas of biomedical research. Elucidation of receptor mechanisms and receptor structure has become the common goal of many scientists from diverse backgrounds. The rapid advances achieved have been due, in large part, to the concentrated effort of workers from a variety of disciplines including classical pharmacology, biochemistry, endocrinology, cell biology, genetics' and molecular biology, among others. Hormone and drug receptors appear to be of three major types, which may be classified by their cellular locations. Found in the plasma membranes of cells are the receptors for a wide variety of polypeptide hormones, catecholamines and a variety of neurotransmitters. Included within this group are those receptors coupled to the enzyme adenylate cyclase. The second group of receptors are the soluble cytoplasmic receptors for the steroid hormones. A third type of hormone receptor is the receptor for the thyroid hormones which appears to be confined to the nucleus. Not only may these different types of receptor be distinguished in terms of their cellular locations but also by their mechanisms of action.
