Book Advanced Transportation Institute 2008

Download or read book Advanced Transportation Institute 2008 written by Mary Beth Wilkes and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighth version of the Advanced Transportation Institute (ATI-09) was conducted in 2009 to encourage high school students to pursue careers in the field of transportation engineering. The University Transportation Center for Alabama partnered with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to teach a one-week institute in June at ALDOT's central office headquarters in Montgomery, AL. The headquarters location provided access to practicing transportation professionals who served as lecturers, and it provided a real-life, transportation working environment. A second three-day institute was taught at the ALDOT Fifth Division office and the UTCA offices at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL in July (ATI-Div-09). ATI-09 was open to rising high school juniors and seniors, with preference given to African Americans and females. Participants came from high schools in west central Alabama from which ALDOT typically recruits. ATI-Div-09 was taught to middle and high school members of the Junior Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Institute presentations, lab experiences, and field trips were designed to give participants a general overview of ALDOT, an introduction to transportation engineering as a career, and hands-on examples and challenges. The comprehensive evaluations conducted at the ends of ATI-09 and ATI-Div-09 indicated that the students enjoyed their experiences, and that they were influenced to consider transportation careers. The 43 student participants in the two ATI sessions indicated that they enjoyed the experience, that they learned about transportation careers and ALDOT, and that (as a group) they were favorably influenced to consider transportation careers.

It offers an innovative approach by presenting a multidimensional examination of the performance of advanced transport systems and transport modes, useful for both theoretical and practical purposes. Advanced transport systems for the twenty-first century are characterized by the superiority of one or several of their infrastructural, technical/technological, operational, economic, environmental, social and policy performances as compared to their conventional counterparts. The advanced transport systems considered include: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) systems in urban area(s), electric and fuel cell passenger cars, high speed tilting trains, High Speed Rail (HSR), Trans Rapid Maglev (TRM), Evacuated Tube Transport system (ETT), advanced commercial subsonic and Supersonic Transport Aircraft (STA), conventionally- and Liquid Hydrogen (LH2)-fuelled commercial air transportation, advanced Air Traffic Control (ATC) technologies and procedures for increasing the airport runway capacity, Underground Freight Transport (UFT) systems in urban area(s), Long Intermodal Freight Train(s) (LIFTs), road mega trucks, large advanced container ships and freight/cargo aircraft and advanced freight/goods collection distribution networks. This book is intended for postgraduates, researchers, professionals and policy makers working in the transport industry.

Book excerpt: The sixth version of the Advanced Transportation Institute was conducted in 2007 to encourage high school students to pursue careers in the field of transportation engineering. The University Transportation Center for Alabama partnered with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to teach a one-week institute at ALDOT's central office headquarters in Montgomery, AL. The headquarters location provided access to practicing transportation professionals who served as lecturers, and it provided a real-life, transportation working environment. The Advanced Transportation Institute 2007 (ATI-07) was open to rising high school juniors and seniors with preference given to African Americans and females. Participants came from high schools in west central Alabama from which ALDOT typically recruits. Students were nominated to attend the Institute by their teachers and guidance counselors, using criteria provided by ALDOT. Institute presentations, lab experiences, and field trips were designed to give participants a general overview of ALDOT, an introduction to transportation engineering as a career, and hands-on examples and challenges. The comprehensive evaluation conducted at the end of the Institute indicated the students enjoyed their experiences, and that they were influenced to consider transportation careers. The 23 student participants indicated that they enjoyed the experience, that they learned about transportation careers and ALDOT, and that (as a group) they were favorably influenced to consider transportation careers.

Book excerpt: th It is our great privilege and honor to present the proceedings of the 18 International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory (ISTTT), held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, China on 16-18 July 2009. th The 18 ISTTT is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies and Department of Civil and Structural Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The ISTTT series is the main gathering for the world’s transportation and traffic theorists, and those who are interested in contributing to or gaining a deep understanding of traffic and transportation phenomena in order to better plan, design and manage the transportation system. Although it embraces a wide range of topics, from traffic flow theories and demand modeling to road safety and logistics and supply chain modeling, the ISTTT is hallmarked by its intellectual innovation, research and development excellence in the treatment of real-world transportation and traffic problems. The ISTTT prides itself in the extremely high quality of its proceedings. Previous ISTTT conferences were held in Warren, Michigan (1959), London (1963), New York (1965), Karlsruhe (1968), Berkeley, California (1971), Sydney (1974), Kyoto (1977), Toronto (1981), Delft (1984), Cambridge, Massachusetts (1987), Yokohama (1990), Berkeley, California (1993), Lyon (1996), Jerusalem (1999), Adelaide (2002), College Park, Maryland (2005), and London (2007). th th This 18 ISTTT celebrates the 50 Anniversary of this premier conference series.
