Book Guidance and Control Strategies for Aerospace Vehicles

Download or read book Guidance and Control Strategies for Aerospace Vehicles written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A neighboring optimal guidance scheme was devised for a nonlinear dynamic system with stochastic inputs and perfect measurements as applicable to fuel optimal control of an aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle. For the deterministic nonlinear dynamic system describing the atmospheric maneuver, a nominal trajectory was determined. Then, a neighboring, optimal guidance scheme was obtained for open loop and closed loop control configurations. Taking modelling uncertainties into account, a linear, stochastic, neighboring optimal guidance scheme was devised. Finally, the optimal trajectory was approximated as the sum of the deterministic nominal trajectory and the stochastic neighboring optimal solution. Numerical results are presented for a typical vehicle. A fuel-optimal control problem in aeroassisted noncoplanar orbital transfer is also addressed. The equations of motion for the atmospheric maneuver are nonlinear and the optimal (nominal) trajectory and control are obtained. In order to follow the nominal trajectory under actual conditions, a neighboring optimum guidance scheme is designed using linear quadratic regulator theory for onboard real-time implementation. One of the state variables is used as the independent variable in reference to the time. The weighting matrices in the performance index are chosen by a combination of a heuristic method and an optimal modal approach. The necessary feedback control law is obtained in order to minimize the deviations from the nominal conditions. Hibey, J. L. and Naidu, D. S. and Charalambous, C. D. Unspecified Center...

Book Autonomous Trajectory Planning and Guidance Control for Launch Vehicles

Download or read book Autonomous Trajectory Planning and Guidance Control for Launch Vehicles written by Zhengyu Song and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book highlights the autonomous and intelligent flight control of future launch vehicles for improving flight autonomy to plan ascent and descent trajectories onboard, and autonomously handle unexpected events or failures during the flight. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, space launch activities worldwide have grown vigorously. Meanwhile, commercial launches also account for the booming trend. Unfortunately, the risk of space launches still exists and is gradually increasing in line with the rapidly rising launch activities and commercial rockets. In the history of space launches, propulsion and control systems are the two main contributors to launch failures. With the development of information technologies, the increase of the functional density of hardware products, the application of redundant or fault-tolerant solutions, and the improvement of the testability of avionics, the launch losses caused by control systems exhibit a downward trend, and the failures induced by propulsion systems become the focus of attention. Under these failures, the autonomous planning and guidance control may save the missions. This book focuses on the latest progress of relevant projects and academic studies of autonomous guidance, especially on some advanced methods which can be potentially real-time implemented in the future control system of launch vehicles. In Chapter 1, the prospect and technical challenges are summarized by reviewing the development of launch vehicles. Chapters 2 to 4 mainly focus on the flight in the ascent phase, in which the autonomous guidance is mainly reflected in the online planning. Chapters 5 and 6 mainly discuss the powered descent guidance technologies. Finally, since aerodynamic uncertainties exert a significant impact on the performance of the ascent / landing guidance control systems, the estimation of aerodynamic parameters, which are helpful to improve flight autonomy, is discussed in Chapter 7. The book serves as a valuable reference for researchers and engineers working on launch vehicles. It is also a timely source of information for graduate students interested in the subject.

Book Computational Guidance and Control for Aerospace Systems

Download or read book Computational Guidance and Control for Aerospace Systems written by Taylor Patrick Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this dissertation is to develop new techniques that advance the state of the art in optimization-based trajectory generation. Two complementary techniques are studied. First, explicit trajectory generation computes a single path that connects two boundary conditions. For a general optimal control problem, sequential convex programming is used to design iterative algorithms that solve challenging aerospace problems. The limited power available on a spacecraft has long been at odds with the computationally demanding algorithms required to solve such problems, and so specialized techniques for developing real-time capable implementations of these algorithms are presented. Runtime analysis offers initial evidence that it is possible to solve explicit trajectory optimization problems reliably and fast enough to be considered a viable technology. As an alternative approach, implicit trajectory generation computes a set of functions that implicitly define an entire set of trajectories. By carrying out more extensive offline computations, it is shown that a feasible trajectory can be obtained from a wide array of initial conditions by using numerical integration. Consequently, the required real-time computations are significantly reduced compared to explicit trajectory optimization algorithms. Implicit trajectory generation methods can also offer a stronger theoretical, and offline-certifiable, guarantee that a feasible trajectory will be available for a prescribed set of vehicle conditions. Examples in powered descent and satellite attitude control are used to demonstrate each method.

Book Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization

Download or read book Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization written by Bruce A. Conway and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-23 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a long-overdue volume dedicated to space trajectory optimization. Interest in the subject has grown, as space missions of increasing levels of sophistication, complexity, and scientific return - hardly imaginable in the 1960s - have been designed and flown. Although the basic tools of optimization theory remain an accepted canon, there has been a revolution in the manner in which they are applied and in the development of numerical optimization. This volume purposely includes a variety of both analytical and numerical approaches to trajectory optimization. The choice of authors has been guided by the editor's intention to assemble the most expert and active researchers in the various specialities presented. The authors were given considerable freedom to choose their subjects, and although this may yield a somewhat eclectic volume, it also yields chapters written with palpable enthusiasm and relevance to contemporary problems.

Book Analytical Investigations in Aircraft and Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization and Optimal Guidance

Download or read book Analytical Investigations in Aircraft and Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization and Optimal Guidance written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of analytical studies is presented related to unconstrained and constrained aircraft (a/c) energy-state modeling and to spacecraft (s/c) motion under continuous thrust. With regard to a/c unconstrained energy-state modeling, the physical origin of the singular perturbation parameter that accounts for the observed 2-time-scale behavior of a/c during energy climbs is identified and explained. With regard to the constrained energy-state modeling, optimal control problems are studied involving active state-variable inequality constraints. Departing from the practical deficiencies of the control programs for such problems that result from the traditional formulations, a complete reformulation is proposed for these problems which, in contrast to the old formulation, will presumably lead to practically useful controllers that can track an inequality constraint boundary asymptotically, and even in the presence of 2-sided perturbations about it. Finally, with regard to s/c motion under continuous thrust, a thrust program is proposed for which the equations of 2-dimensional motion of a space vehicle in orbit, viewed as a point mass, afford an exact analytic solution. The thrust program arises under the assumption of tangential thrust from the costate system corresponding to minimum-fuel, power-limited, coplanar transfers between two arbitrary conics. The thrust program can be used not only with power-limited propulsion systems, but also with any propulsion system capable of generating continuous thrust of controllable magnitude, and, for propulsion types and classes of transfers for which it is sufficiently optimal the results of this report suggest a method of maneuvering during planetocentric or heliocentric orbital operations, requiring a minimum amount of computation; thus uniquely suitable for real-time feedback guidance implementations. Book Trajectory Optimization and Guidance for an Aerospace Plane

Download or read book Trajectory Optimization and Guidance for an Aerospace Plane written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first step in the approach to developing guidance laws for a horizontal take-off, air breathing single-stage-to-orbit vehicle is to characterize the minimum-fuel ascent trajectories. The capability to generate constrained, minimum fuel ascent trajectories for a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle was developed. A key component of this capability is the general purpose trajectory optimization program OTIS. The pre-production version, OTIS 0.96 was installed and run on a Convex C-1. A propulsion model was developed covering the entire flight envelope of a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle. Three separate propulsion modes, corresponding to an after burning turbojet, a ramjet and a scramjet, are used in the air breathing propulsion phase. The Generic Hypersonic Aerodynamic Model Example aerodynamic model of a hypersonic air breathing single-stage-to-orbit vehicle was obtained and implemented. Preliminary results pertaining to the effects of variations in acceleration constraints, available thrust level and fuel specific impulse on the shape of the minimum-fuel ascent trajectories were obtained. The results show that, if the air breathing engines are sized for acceleration to orbital velocity, it is the acceleration constraint rather than the dynamic pressure constraint that is active during ascent. Book Fault Tolerant Optimal Trajectory Generation for Reusable Launch Vehicles

Download or read book Fault Tolerant Optimal Trajectory Generation for Reusable Launch Vehicles written by Patrick J. Shaffer and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconfigurable inner-loop control laws improve the fault tolerance of a vehicle to control effector failures; however, in order to preserve stability, the unfailed effectors may be deployed to off-nominal positions to compensate for undesirable perturbations caused by the failed effectors. The effectors acting under the influence of a reconfigurable control law can produce significant perturbations to the nominal forces produced by the wing and body and can also affect the range of flight conditions over which the vehicle can be controlled. Three degree-of-freedom (3 DOF) dynamical models used in trajectory optimization for aerospace vehicles typically include wing-body aerodynamic force effects but ignore the aerodynamic forces produced by the control surfaces. In this work, a method for including these trim effects as well as control induced trajectory constraints in a 3 DOF model is presented.
