The sections are organized according to a logical structure covering benign and malignant thyroid conditions, parathyroid disease, and ultrasound technology, ultrasound-guided interventions, and innovations. The style of the chapters provide practical, actionable information that is richly illustrated with figures and links to video cine-clips. The chapter topics aim to show how different specialists uniquely apply ultrasound in given clinical scenarios. The text illustrates the optimal incorporation of current practice guidelines, as this remains varied and inconsistent among clinicians. The content is written by invited experts who perform ultrasound in their daily clinical practices and participate in teaching ultrasound nationally and internationally. It conveys the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information in an interactive and visual format. Advanced Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound fills a gap in currently available resources by serving as a single resource unifying information relevant to multiple specialists interested in advanced thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound. It provides a practical, concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management.

Book Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided FNA

Download or read book Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided FNA written by Daniel S. Duick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise, gold-standard 4th edition book, the volume editors and authors synthesize the prior three editions and provide a comprehensive and expanded review on the latest in the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules, as well as an update on parathyroid disease and non-endocrine lesions of the neck. This user-friendly edition again emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to thyroid ultrasound and UGFNA, offering all the new information and subtleties clinicians must know in the application of this technique, now firmly established as a primary tool for diagnosing and managing thyroid disease. Developed by renowned experts in thyroid and parathyroid disease, the book covers not only thyroid and parathyroid disease, but also imaging of the salivary glands and other non-endocrine lesions of the neck. In this edition, the authors expand the chapters on both surgical and non-surgical management. Given the increased use of molecular markers in thyroid evaluation, an excellent chapter addresses this topic. Finally, as more endocrinologists and surgeons perform ultrasounds in their office practices, a chapter on authoring ultrasound reports is now included. Combining the collective wisdom of specialists who treat patients with thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and parathyroid disease, Handbook of Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided FNA, 4th Edition is an invaluable resource and will continue serving as the “go to” guide for surgeons, endocrinologists, fellows and residents. Foreword by Peter A. Singer, MD, Chief of Clinical Endocrinology and Director, Thyroid Diagnostic Center, Keck School of Medicine of USC, Los Angeles, CA.

Book excerpt: This book is a wide-ranging and up-to-date guide to the use of ultrasound for imaging of the thyroid that will meet the needs of novices while providing more experienced professionals with advanced information. All of the techniques employed in modern thyroid ultrasound are covered, from conventional grayscale and Doppler imaging to elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, with a focus on practical aspects and with detailed analysis of their diagnostic value and limitations. The characteristic ultrasound findings of the normal thyroid and a wide range of thyroid diseases and disorders are described with the aid of hundreds of high-quality images. Diffuse changes and thyroid lesions are discussed in depth, paying close attention to aspects of importance for early detection and differential diagnosis. In this context the authors summarize their personal experiences in the use of qualitative parameters of compression elastography and quantitative data of shear-wave elastography. In addition, a practical approach to the risk stratification of thyroid nodules is proposed. The book concludes with a resumé of the main challenges and pitfalls in thyroid ultrasound.

Book Thyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound guided FNA Biopsy

Download or read book Thyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound guided FNA Biopsy written by H. Jack Baskin and published by Boom Koninklijke Uitgevers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound has undergone numerous advances in technology such as grey-scale imaging, real-time sonography, high resolution 7.5-10 MHz transducers, and colour-flow Doppler. This makes ultrasound able to provide very accurate images of the thyroid gland quickly, inexpensively, and safely. However, in spite of these advances, ultrasound remains drastically underutilized by endocrinologists. In part, this is due to a lack of understanding of the ways in which ultrasound can aid in the diagnosis of various thyroid conditions and to a lack of experience in the ultrasound technique by the clinician. This guide presents a hands-on approach to using ultrasound in the clinical evaluation and management of thyroid disease. It is written specifically for the clinician and discusses the subtleties one needs to be aware of in using this technique. Particular attention is paid to using ultrasound in conjunction with FNA biopsy. Technology such as three-dimensional ultrasound, colour-flow Doppler, and percutaneous injection of cysts and nodules are discussed and demonstrated.

Truly multidisciplinary in its approach, chapters are written by experts in fields ranging from clinical pathology to internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology, drawing the various specialties together to create a comprehensive picture of cytology's role in diagnosis and treatment of animal disease. Firmly grounded in the primary literature, the book focuses on companion animals, with special chapters for species with fewer publications. Chapters are logically organized by body system, with additional chapters on tumors of particular import and diagnostic decision making. The first two sections of Veterinary Cytology focus on cytology techniques, quality control, and special laboratory techniques. Subsequent sections are organ/tissue-based and reflect what is known about the canine, feline, and equine species. This is followed by chapters on non-traditional species, including exotic companion mammals, rabbits, cattle, camelids, non-human primates, reptiles and birds, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and sheep and goats. The last section highlights some unique features of the applications of cytology in industry settings. Provides a gold-standard reference to data-driven information about cytologic analysis in companion animal species Brings together authors from a wide range of specialties to present a thorough survey of cytology's use in veterinary medicine Offers broader species coverage and greater depth than any cytology reference currently available Veterinary Cytology is an essential resource for clinical and anatomic pathologists and any specialist in areas using cytology, including veterinary oncologists, criticalists, surgeons, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and internists.

Book excerpt: Identify the possibility of hypothyroidism when the patient's symptoms include fatigue, constipation, feeling cold, impaired memory and slow heart rate. The disease is common and its symptoms may be vague. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism and treatment of hypothyroidism originating in the thyroid gland (primary hypothyroidism) are tasks of the primary health care.Hypothyroidism is easy to confirm or exclude by determining serum TSH and free T4 (FT4) concentrations.Remember that hypothyroidism can be the cause of high serum cholesterol or creatine kinase (CK) concentrations. In replacement therapy, a young or middle-aged patient usually feels best if TSH concentration is about 1–2 mU/l and FT4 concentration is close to the upper limit of the reference range.Elderly patients with e.g. angina pectoris or arrhythmias often are more susceptible to the effects of thyroxine. In them, the maintenance dose remains slightly lower and TSH concentration respectively a little higher.Ultrasonography has no role in the investigation of hypothyroidism (unless it is indicated by the findings on palpation).Thyroxine should not be used for the treatment of e.g. depression, low energy level or overweight in a person who is biochemically euthyroid.
