Book Advanced Classical Electromagnetism

Download or read book Advanced Classical Electromagnetism written by Robert Wald and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a concise, beginning graduate-level textbook on classical electromagnetism, the branch of physics that describes the interaction of electric currents or fields and magnetic fields. Electromagnetism (also called electrodynamics) is one of the pillars of modern physics and, as such, of the modern physics curriculum, with courses on electromagnetism required at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses traditionally proceed in a quasi-historical fashion, starting from equations and laws that were first formulated in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and still form the foundations of our understanding of electromagnetism. However, as Robert Wald argues, teaching in this way can be imprecise and tends to promote outdated ways of thinking about the subject. This book rethinks how electromagnetism is presented at the graduate level, offering a corrective that aims to bring teaching up to date with our more modern understanding of the topic. The book begins by debunking four common misconceptions, or "myths," that can hinder a deep conceptual understanding of electromagnetism. Wald then proceeds through the major topics first-year grad courses (and textbooks) in electromagnetism typically cover, including electrostatics, dielectrics, magnetostatics, electrodynamics, geometric optics, special relativity, gauge theory, and point charge. Wald's aim throughout is to explain to students how to think about electromagnetism from a modern and mathematically precise perspective, formulating all the key conceptual ideas and results in the field clearly and concisely, while forgoing extensive collections of examples and applications. The book could be used as the basis for or as a supplement to a course, or for self-study by students seeking a deeper understanding than traditional courses and books offer"--

Book Advanced Theory of Electricity and Magnetism

Download or read book Advanced Theory of Electricity and Magnetism written by William S. Franklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Theory of Electricity and Magnetism: A Textbook for Colleges and Technical Schools To make the study of theoretical physics something besides a 5 purely formal mathematical exercise, it is necessary to keep physical things always clearly and vividly in mind. It is comparatively easy to do this in the study of applied science, but it is extremely difficult to do it in the study of many of the unfamiliar topics which are discussed in this book. The character of the treatment in this book has been determined throughout by the desire to keep the student's mind jammed up tight against physical things The chapter on potential, for example, is kept within severely concrete limits, and the student who wishes to get an insight into the elementary mathematical theory of potential should read chapter IX of Franklin, MacNutt and Charles' Calculus published by the authors. South Bethlehem, Pa., 1913. The authors desire to express their appreciation of the great assistance which Professor R. L. Charles has rendered in the preparation of this book. Book Electricity Magnetism and Light

Download or read book Electricity Magnetism and Light written by Wayne M. Saslow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-07-19 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very comprehensive introduction to electricity, magnetism and optics ranging from the interesting and useful history of the science, to connections with current real-world phenomena in science, engineering and biology, to common sense advice and insight on the intuitive understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena. This is a fun book to read, heavy on relevance, with practical examples, such as sections on motors and generators, as well as `take-home experiments' to bring home the key concepts. Slightly more advanced than standard freshman texts for calculus-based engineering physics courses with the mathematics worked out clearly and concisely. Helpful diagrams accompany the discussion. The emphasis is on intuitive physics, graphical visualization, and mathematical implementation. - Electricity, Magnetism, and Light is an engaging introductory treatment of electromagnetism and optics for second semester physics and engineering majors. - Focuses on conceptual understanding, with an emphasis on relevance and historical development. - Mathematics is specific and avoids unnecessary technical development. - Emphasis on physical concepts, analyzing the electromagnetic aspects of many everyday phenomena, and guiding readers carefully through mathematical derivations. - Provides a wealth of interesting information, from the history of the science of electricity and magnetism, to connections with real world phenomena in science, engineering, and biology, to common sense advice and insight on the intuitive understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena

Book Advanced Electromagnetism Foundations Theory And Applications

Download or read book Advanced Electromagnetism Foundations Theory And Applications written by Terence William Barrett and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-11-16 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Electromagnetism: Foundations, Theory and Applications treats what is conventionally called electromagnetism or Maxwell's theory within the context of gauge theory or Yang-Mills theory. A major theme of this book is that fields are not stand-alone entities but are defined by their boundary conditions. The book has practical relevance to efficient antenna design, the understanding of forces and stresses in high energy pulses, ring laser gyros, high speed computer logic elements, efficient transfer of power, parametric conversion, and many other devices and systems. Conventional electromagnetism is shown to be an underdeveloped, rather than a completely developed, field of endeavor, with major challenges in development still to be met.

Book A Course in Classical Physics 1 Mechanics

Download or read book A Course in Classical Physics 1 Mechanics written by Alessandro Bettini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume covers the mechanics of point particles, gravitation, extended systems (starting from the two-body system), the basic concepts of relativistic mechanics and the mechanics of rigid bodies and fluids. It is part of a four-volume textbook, which covers electromagnetism, mechanics, fluids and thermodynamics, and waves and light, and is designed to reflect the typical syllabus during the first two years of a calculus-based university physics program. Throughout all four volumes, particular attention is paid to in-depth clarification of conceptual aspects, and to this end the historical roots of the principal concepts are traced. Writings by the founders of classical mechanics, G. Galilei and I. Newton, are reproduced, encouraging students to consult them. Emphasis is also consistently placed on the experimental basis of the concepts, highlighting the experimental nature of physics. Whenever feasible at the elementary level, concepts relevant to more advanced courses in modern physics are included. Each chapter begins with an introduction that briefly describes the subjects to be discussed and ends with a summary of the main results. A number of “Questions” are included to help readers check their level of understanding. The textbook offers an ideal resource for physics students, lecturers and, last but not least, all those seeking a deeper understanding of the experimental basics of physics.

Download or read book Electricity and Magnetism written by W. N. Cottingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an undergraduate textbook on the physics of electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic fields and waves. It is written mainly with the physics student in mind, although it will also be of use to students of electrical and electronic engineering. The approach is concise but clear, and the authors have assumed that the reader will be familiar with the basic phenomena. The theory, however, is set out in a completely self-contained and coherent way and developed to the point where the reader can appreciate the beauty and coherence of the Maxwell equations. Throughout, the authors stress the relationships between microscopic structure of matter and the observed macroscopic electric and magnetic fields. The applications cover a wide range of topics, and each chapter ends with a set of problems with answers.
