Book Geometry and Complexity Theory

Download or read book Geometry and Complexity Theory written by J. M. Landsberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two central problems in computer science are P vs NP and the complexity of matrix multiplication. The first is also a leading candidate for the greatest unsolved problem in mathematics. The second is of enormous practical and theoretical importance. Algebraic geometry and representation theory provide fertile ground for advancing work on these problems and others in complexity. This introduction to algebraic complexity theory for graduate students and researchers in computer science and mathematics features concrete examples that demonstrate the application of geometric techniques to real world problems. Written by a noted expert in the field, it offers numerous open questions to motivate future research. Complexity theory has rejuvenated classical geometric questions and brought different areas of mathematics together in new ways. This book will show the beautiful, interesting, and important questions that have arisen as a result.

Book Studies in Pure Mathematics

Download or read book Studies in Pure Mathematics written by ERDÖS and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, written by his friends, collaborators and students, is offered to the memory of Paul Tunin. Most of the papers they contributed discuss subjects related to his own fields of research. The wide range of topics reflects the versatility of his mathematical activity. His work has inspired many mathematicians in analytic number theory, theory of functions of a complex variable, interpolation and approximation theory, numerical algebra, differential equations, statistical group theory and theory of graphs. Beyond the influence of his deep and important results he had the exceptional ability to communicate to others his enthusiasm for mathematics. One of the strengths of Turan was to ask unusual questions that became starting points of many further results, sometimes opening up new fields of research. We hope that this volume will illustrate this aspect of his work adequately. Born in Budapest, on August 28, 1910, Paul Turan obtained his Ph. D. under L. Fejer in 1935. His love for mathematies enabled him to work even under inhuman circumstances during the darkest years of the Second World War. One of his major achievements, his power sum method originated in this period. After the war he was visiting professor in Denmark and in Princeton. In 1949 he became professor at the Eotvos Lorand University of Budapest, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a leading figure of the Hungarian mathematical community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Finsler and Lagrange Geometry and its Applications: A Meeting of Minds, took place August 13-20, 1998 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. The main objective of this meeting was to help acquaint North American geometers with the extensive modern literature on Finsler geometry and Lagrange geometry of the Japanese and European schools, each with its own venerable history, on the one hand, and to communicate recent advances in stochastic theory and Hodge theory for Finsler manifolds by the younger North American school, on the other. The intent was to bring together practitioners of these schools of thought in a Canadian venue where there would be ample opportunity to exchange information and have cordial personal interactions. The present set of refereed papers begins ·with the Pedagogical Sec tion I, where introductory and brief survey articles are presented, one from the Japanese School and two from the European School (Romania and Hungary). These have been prepared for non-experts with the intent of explaining basic points of view. The Section III is the main body of work. It is arranged in alphabetical order, by author. Section II gives a brief account of each of these contribu tions with a short reference list at the end. More extensive references are given in the individual articles.

Book Tensors Geometry and Applications

Download or read book Tensors Geometry and Applications written by J. M. Landsberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensors are ubiquitous in the sciences. The geometry of tensors is both a powerful tool for extracting information from data sets, and a beautiful subject in its own right. This book has three intended uses: a classroom textbook, a reference work for researchers in the sciences, and an account of classical and modern results in (aspects of) the theory that will be of interest to researchers in geometry. For classroom use, there is a modern introduction to multilinear algebra and to the geometry and representation theory needed to study tensors, including a large number of exercises. For researchers in the sciences, there is information on tensors in table format for easy reference and a summary of the state of the art in elementary language. This is the first book containing many classical results regarding tensors. Particular applications treated in the book include the complexity of matrix multiplication, P versus NP, signal processing, phylogenetics, and algebraic statistics. For geometers, there is material on secant varieties, G-varieties, spaces with finitely many orbits and how these objects arise in applications, discussions of numerous open questions in geometry arising in applications, and expositions of advanced topics such as the proof of the Alexander-Hirschowitz theorem and of the Weyman-Kempf method for computing syzygies.

Book The Geometry of Higher Order Lagrange Spaces

Download or read book The Geometry of Higher Order Lagrange Spaces written by R. Miron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the problem of the geometrizing of Lagrangians which depend on higher-order accelerations. It presents a construction of the geometry of the total space of the bundle of the accelerations of order k>=1. A geometrical study of the notion of the higher-order Lagrange space is conducted, and the old problem of prolongation of Riemannian spaces to k-osculator manifolds is solved. Also, the geometrical ground for variational calculus on the integral of actions involving higher-order Lagrangians is dealt with. Applications to higher-order analytical mechanics and theoretical physics are included as well. Audience: This volume will be of interest to scientists whose work involves differential geometry, mechanics of particles and systems, calculus of variation and optimal control, optimization, optics, electromagnetic theory, and biology.

Book The Geometry of Hamilton and Lagrange Spaces

Download or read book The Geometry of Hamilton and Lagrange Spaces written by R. Miron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents for the first time the foundations of Hamilton Geometry. The concept of Hamilton Space, introduced by the first author and investigated by the authors, opens a new domain in differential geometry with large applications in mechanics, physics, optimal control, etc. The book consists of thirteen chapters. The first three chapters present the topics of the tangent bundle geometry, Finsler and Lagrange spaces. Chapters 4-7 are devoted to the construction of geometry of Hamilton spaces and the duality between these spaces and Lagrange spaces. The dual of a Finsler space is a Cartan space. Even this notion is completely new, its geometry has the same symmetry and beauty as that of Finsler spaces. Chapter 8 deals with symplectic transformations of cotangent bundle. The last five chapters present, for the first time, the geometrical theory and applications of Higher-Order Hamilton spaces. In particular, the case of order two is presented in detail. Audience: mathematicians, geometers, physicists, and mechanicians. This volume can also be recommended as a supplementary graduate text.

In addition, conference participants are also highlighted.

Book A Course in Metric Geometry

Download or read book A Course in Metric Geometry written by Dmitri Burago and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Metric geometry" is an approach to geometry based on the notion of length on a topological space. This approach experienced a very fast development in the last few decades and penetrated into many other mathematical disciplines, such as group theory, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations. The objective of this graduate textbook is twofold: to give a detailed exposition of basic notions and techniques used in the theory of length spaces, and, more generally, to offer an elementary introduction into a broad variety of geometrical topics related to the notion of distance, including Riemannian and Carnot-Caratheodory metrics, the hyperbolic plane, distance-volume inequalities, asymptotic geometry (large scale, coarse), Gromov hyperbolic spaces, convergence of metric spaces, and Alexandrov spaces (non-positively and non-negatively curved spaces).

Book Handbook of Finsler geometry 2 2003

Download or read book Handbook of Finsler geometry 2 2003 written by Peter L. Antonelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several mathematical approaches to Finsler Geometry, all of which are contained and expounded in this comprehensive Handbook. The principal bundles pathway to state-of-the-art Finsler Theory is here provided by M. Matsumoto. His is a cornerstone for this set of essays, as are the articles of R. Miron (Lagrange Geometry) and J. Szilasi (Spray and Finsler Geometry). After studying either one of these, the reader will be able to understand the included survey articles on complex manifolds, holonomy, sprays and KCC-theory, symplectic structures, Legendre duality, Hodge theory and Gauss-Bonnet formulas. Finslerian diffusion theory is presented by its founders, P. Antonelli and T. Zastawniak. To help with calculations and conceptualizations, a CD-ROM containing the software package FINSLER, based on MAPLE, is included with the book.

Book Complex Spaces in Finsler Lagrange and Hamilton Geometries

Download or read book Complex Spaces in Finsler Lagrange and Hamilton Geometries written by Gheorghe Munteanu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a historical point of view, the theory we submit to the present study has its origins in the famous dissertation of P. Finsler from 1918 ([Fi]). In a the classical notion also conventional classification, Finsler geometry has besides a number of generalizations, which use the same work technique and which can be considered self-geometries: Lagrange and Hamilton spaces. Finsler geometry had a period of incubation long enough, so that few math ematicians (E. Cartan, L. Berwald, S.S. Chem, H. Rund) had the patience to penetrate into a universe of tensors, which made them compare it to a jungle. To aU of us, who study nowadays Finsler geometry, it is obvious that the qualitative leap was made in the 1970's by the crystallization of the nonlinear connection notion (a notion which is almost as old as Finsler space, [SZ4]) and by work-skills into its adapted frame fields. The results obtained by M. Matsumoto (coUected later, in 1986, in a monograph, [Ma3]) aroused interest not only in Japan, but also in other countries such as Romania, Hungary, Canada and the USA, where schools of Finsler geometry are founded and are presently widely recognized.

Book Lectures on Poisson Geometry

Download or read book Lectures on Poisson Geometry written by Marius Crainic and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent book will be very useful for students and researchers wishing to learn the basics of Poisson geometry, as well as for those who know something about the subject but wish to update and deepen their knowledge. The authors' philosophy that Poisson geometry is an amalgam of foliation theory, symplectic geometry, and Lie theory enables them to organize the book in a very coherent way. —Alan Weinstein, University of California at Berkeley This well-written book is an excellent starting point for students and researchers who want to learn about the basics of Poisson geometry. The topics covered are fundamental to the theory and avoid any drift into specialized questions; they are illustrated through a large collection of instructive and interesting exercises. The book is ideal as a graduate textbook on the subject, but also for self-study. —Eckhard Meinrenken, University of Toronto

Book A Course in Differential Geometry

Download or read book A Course in Differential Geometry written by Thierry Aubin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook for second-year graduate students is intended as an introduction to differential geometry with principal emphasis on Riemannian geometry. Chapter I explains basic definitions and gives the proofs of the important theorems of Whitney and Sard. Chapter II deals with vector fields and differential forms. Chapter III addresses integration of vector fields and p-plane fields. Chapter IV develops the notion of connection on a Riemannian manifold considered as a means to define parallel transport on the manifold. The author also discusses related notions of torsion and curvature, and gives a working knowledge of the covariant derivative. Chapter V specializes on Riemannian manifolds by deducing global properties from local properties of curvature, the final goal being to determine the manifold completely. Chapter VI explores some problems in PDEs suggested by the geometry of manifolds. The author is well-known for his significant contributions to the field of geometry and PDEs - particularly for his work on the Yamabe problem - and for his expository accounts on the subject. The text contains many problems and solutions, permitting the reader to apply the theorems and to see concrete developments of the abstract theory.
