Download or read book Wideband Modulation and Tuning of Semiconductor Lasers Using Novel Quantum Well Structures written by Xuan Huang and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking University College London as follows: The objective of the tasking was to realize GaAs/AlGaAs tunable lasers which use the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) as a tuning mechanism to produce a uniform frequency modulation (FM) response. A detailed analysis of optical frequency modulation analogue link is presented. It is shown that these enable non-linear limits on the dynamic range of long (>100km) links to be overcome. Using realistic system parameters signal to noise ratios exceeding 156 dB. Hz are predicted for 1000km links.

Book Quantum Confined Laser Devices

Download or read book Quantum Confined Laser Devices written by Peter Blood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The semiconductor laser, invented over 50 years ago, has had an enormous impact on the digital technologies that now dominate so many applications in business, commerce and the home. The laser is used in all types of optical fibre communication networks that enable the operation of the internet, e-mail, voice and skype transmission. Approximately one billion are produced each year for a market valued at around $5 billion. Nearly all semiconductor lasers now use extremely thin layers of light emitting materials (quantum well lasers). Increasingly smaller nanostructures are used in the form of quantum dots. The impact of the semiconductor laser is surprising in the light of the complexity of the physical processes that determine the operation of every device. This text takes the reader from the fundamental optical gain and carrier recombination processes in quantum wells and quantum dots, through descriptions of common device structures to an understanding of their operating characteristics. It has a consistent treatment of both quantum dot and quantum well structures taking full account of their dimensionality, which provides the reader with a complete account of contemporary quantum confined laser diodes. It includes plenty of illustrations from both model calculations and experimental observations. There are numerous exercises, many designed to give a feel for values of key parameters and experience obtaining quantitative results from equations. Some challenging concepts, previously the subject matter of research monographs, are treated here at this level for the first time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angle modulation techniques enable analogue optical transmission systems to be realized which have dynamic ranges in excess of those possible with conventional intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) links. Tunable semiconductor lasers are essential components for links employing optical frequency modulation (OFM) for enhanced dynamic range or dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) for multi-channel capability. They are also key components in many advanced sensor systems. Existing lasers use the forward bias carrier injection effect (CIE) to achieve tuning. Whilst this is a convenient technique for wavelength setting it suffers from severe limitations when fast tuning or modulation of the laser frequency is required. At low modulation frequencies the response is dominated by thermal effects, leading to a decrease in emission frequency with increasing carrier, whereas at high frequencies the response is dominated by plasma and band filling effects giving an increase in frequency with increasing current. The resulting overall frequency response typically vaiies by more than an order of magnitude from 0-1GHz accompanied by phase variations of up to pi radians. Equalizing such a response, even over a restricted frequency range, request complex networks that have to be optimized for the particular laser and its operating conditions. Improved uniformity of response has been obtained in multi- electrode distributed feedback (DFB) lasers by carefully adjusting the distribution of current between sections, but the high frequency response tends to be limited by current lifetime in the section biased below transparency to about 1GHz.

Book Ge SiGe Quantum Well Waveguide Modulator for Optical Interconnect Systems

Download or read book Ge SiGe Quantum Well Waveguide Modulator for Optical Interconnect Systems written by Ren Shen and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to the development of silicon VLSI technology over the past several decades, we can now integrate far more transistors onto a single chip than ever before. However, this also imposes more stringent requirements, in terms of bandwidth, density, and power consumption, on the interconnect systems that link transistors. The interconnect system is currently one of the major hurdles for the further advancement of the electronic technology. Optical interconnect is considered a promising solution to overcome the interconnect bottleneck. The quantum-confined Stark effect in Ge/SiGe quantum well system paves the way to realize efficient optical modulation on Si in a fully CMOS compatible fashion. In this dissertation, we investigate the integration of Ge/SiGe quantum well waveguide modulators with silicon-on-insulator waveguides. For the first time, we demonstrate the selective epitaxial growth of Ge/SiGe quantum well structures on patterned Si substrates. The selective epitaxy exhibits perfect selectivity and minimal pattern sensitivity. Compared to their counterparts made using bulk epitaxy, the p-i-n diodes from selective epitaxy demonstrate very low reverse leakage current and high reverse breakdown voltage. Strong quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) is, for the first time, demonstrated in this material system in the telecommunication C-band at room temperature. A 3 dB optical modulation bandwidth of 2.8 THz is measured, covering more than half of the C-band. We propose, analyze, and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to realize butt coupling between a SOI waveguide and a selectively grown Ge/SiGe quantum well waveguide modulator using a thin dielectric spacer. Through numerical simulation, we show that the insertion loss penalty for a thin 20 nm thick spacer can be as low as 0.13 dB. Such a quantum well waveguide modulator with a footprint of 8 [Mu]m2 has also been fabricated, demonstrating 3.2 dB modulation contrast with merely 1V swing at a speed of 16 Gpbs.

Book Semiconductor Laser Engineering Reliability and Diagnostics

Download or read book Semiconductor Laser Engineering Reliability and Diagnostics written by Peter W. Epperlein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.

Book Quantum Confined Excitons in 2 Dimensional Materials

Download or read book Quantum Confined Excitons in 2 Dimensional Materials written by Carmen Palacios-Berraquero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first established experimental results of an emergent field: 2-dimensional materials as platforms for quantum technologies, specifically through the optics of quantum-confined excitons. It also provides an extensive review of the literature from a number of disciplines that informed the research, and introduces the materials of focus – 2d Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (2d-TMDs) – in detail, discussing electronic and chemical structure, excitonic behaviour and response to strain. This is followed by a brief overview of quantum information technologies, including concepts such as single-photon sources and quantum networks. The methods chapter addresses quantum optics techniques and 2d-material processing, while the results section shows the development of a method to deterministically create quantum dots (QDs) in the 2d-TMDs, which can trap single-excitons; the fabrication of atomically thin quantum light-emitting diodes to induce all-electrical single-photon emission from the QDs, and lastly, the use of devices to controllably trap single-spins in the QDs –the first step towards their use as optically-addressable matter qubits.
