Download or read book LV Software for Supersonic Flow Analysis written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC) maintains a leadership position in research into advanced aerospace propulsion systems. For the next generation of aircraft, engine designs continue to involve complex, high-speed flows. Performing the detailed flow diagnostics to properly evaluate these designs requires advanced instrumentation to probe these highly turbulent flows. The hostile flow environment often requires nonintrusive measurement techniques such as the laser velocimeter (LV). Since the LV is a proven instrument for nonintrusive flow measurement, it can provide quantitative velocity data with minimal interference to the flow. Based on anticipated flow conditions, laser velocimeter systems were procured from TSI, Inc. The initial system utilized counter processor technology, but later procurements this past year include a more advanced, correlator-based processor, which significantly improves the overall LV performance. To meet the needs of advanced research into propulsion, this instrument must be integrated into an existing VAX/VMS computer system for data acquisition, processing, and presentation. The work done under this grant before this period concentrated on developing the software required to setup and acquire data from the TSI MI-990 multichannel interface, and the RMR 1989 rotating machinery resolver. With the basis established for controlling the operation of the LV system, software development this past year shifted in emphasis from instrumentation control and data acquisition to data analysis and presentation. The progress of the program is reported. Bell, William A. NASA-CR-190911, NAS 1.26:190911 NAG3-1215...

Book Support for Graduate Research in Supersonic Reacting Flows

Download or read book Support for Graduate Research in Supersonic Reacting Flows written by Mark Godfrey Mungal and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was aimed at obtaining a more fundamental understanding of mixing and combustion in supersonic flows. Advanced laser based techniques for measurements in an existing supersonic shear layer facility were primarily used. The main scientific question addressed was a comparison of the similarities and differences between mixing and reaction when compressibility plays a significant role. To this end, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to obtain detailed, whole field velocity measurements under a range of compressibility conditions. These measurements are complementary to earlier measurements of scalar concentrations in similar flows. New observations concerning the nature of the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields were made as a function of compressibility. In addition, Planar Laser Mie Scattering is used to obtain structure velocity measurements for comparison with the actual fluid velocities.

Book Overview of Supersonic Aerodynamics Measurement Techniques in the Nasa Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

Download or read book Overview of Supersonic Aerodynamics Measurement Techniques in the Nasa Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel written by Gary E. Erickson and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview is given of selected measurement techniques used in the NASA Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC) Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of aerospace vehicles operating at supersonic speeds. A broad definition of a measurement technique is adopted in this paper and is any qualitative or quantitative experimental approach that provides information leading to the improved understanding of the supersonic aerodynamic characteristics. On-surface and off-surface measurement techniques used to obtain discrete (point) and global (field) measurements and planar and global flow visualizations are described, and examples of all methods are included. The discussion is limited to recent experiences in the UPWT and is, therefore, not an exhaustive review of existing experimental techniques. The diversity and high quality of the measurement techniques and the resultant data illustrate the capabilities of a ground-based experimental facility and the key role that it plays in the advancement of our understanding, prediction, and control of supersonic aerodynamics.

Book Measurement of Flow Angularity at Supersonic and Hypersonic Speeds with the Use of a Conical Probe

Download or read book Measurement of Flow Angularity at Supersonic and Hypersonic Speeds with the Use of a Conical Probe written by Frank Edwin Swalley and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of a 40° half-angle cone for measuring flow angularity were determined experimentally. Tests were conducted at a Mach number of 21 in helium with check points at Mach number 3.55 in air for angles of pitch up to 5°. The air tests confirmed theoretical indications of small or negligible Mach number and test-medium effects for the case of air and helium. The instrument is capable of measuring flow angularity at high Reynolds numbers and speeds greater than that necessary for shock attachment to within ± 1/3°.

Book Instantaneous Velocity Field Imaging Instrument for Supersonic Reacting Flows

Download or read book Instantaneous Velocity Field Imaging Instrument for Supersonic Reacting Flows written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technical tasks conducted to develop and demonstrate a new gas velocity measurement technique for high enthalpy reacting flows is described. The technique is based on Doppler-shifted Planar Laser-induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging of the OH radical. The imaging approach permits, in principle, single-shot measurements of the 2-D distribution of a single velocity component in the measurement plane, and is thus a technique of choice for applications in high enthalpy transient flow facilities. In contrast to previous work in this area, the present program demonstrated an approach which modified the diagnostic technique to function under the constraints of practical flow conditions of engineering interest, rather than vice-versa. In order to accomplish the experimental demonstrations, the state-of-the-art in PLIF diagnostic techniques was advanced in several ways. Each of these tasks is described in detail and is intended to serve as a reference in supporting the transition of this new capability to the fielded PLIF instruments now installed at several national test facilities. Among the new results of general interest in LlF-based flow diagnostics, a detailed set of the first measurements of the collisional broadening and shifting behavior of OH (1,0) band transitions in H7-air combustion environments is included. Such measurements are critical in the design of a successful strategy for PLIF velocity imaging; they also relate to accurate concentration and temperature measurements, particularly in compressible flow regimes. Furthermore, the results shed new light on the fundamental relationship between broadening and energy transfer collisions in OH A(sup 2)Sigma(+)v(sup ') = 1. The first single-pulse, spectrally-resolved measurements of the output of common pulsed dye lasers were also produced during the course of this effort. As with the OH broadening measurements, these data are a significant aspect of a successful velocity imaging strategy, and also have potenti...
