  • ISBN : 135106049X
  • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book Education 16 19 1993 written by Eric Macfarlane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1993, this book considers the needs of older teenage students and the various forms of provision made for them. The 16-19 sector of education is a transition stage for students and a system in transition for educators. At a time of rapid change the author assesses the significance of current trends and recent legislation for managers, teachers and lecturers in schools and colleges catering for this age group. Eric Macfarlane argues that the 16-19 sector provides both a microcosm and intensification of the tensions, divisions and conflicting aims and objectives present throughout the education system as a whole. He explores the differences that exist between the academic and vocational routes to qualification, between the comprehensive, selective and independent systems and between ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ approaches to the learning process. The ideologies and policies that have produced the present system are traced and the case for reform examined. Different management tasks in 16-19 education are considered, with emphasis on current changes in strategies and structures. The book highlights the distinctive features of the various types of institution that provide for students aged 16-19 and the ways in which these distinctions are becoming blurred. The final chapters consider the future of 16-19 provision and the particular impact of the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act.

Book The Curriculum of the Future

Download or read book The Curriculum of the Future written by Michael F. D. Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book the author looks back on the 'knowledge question'. What knowledge gets selected to be validated as school knowledge or as part of the school curriculum, and why is it selected? Looking forward, Young discusses how most developed countries have high levels of participation in post-compulsory education, but still use curricula designed for a time when only the elite pursued further education. He argues the need to rethink post-16 education to shift focus onto vocational education, school-work issues and lifelong learning.

Book The Liberal Arts Paradox in Higher Education

Download or read book The Liberal Arts Paradox in Higher Education written by Kathryn Telling and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liberal arts approach to higher education is a growing trend globally. We are told that the mental dexterity and independent, questioning spirit cultivated by such interdisciplinary degrees are the best preparation for the as-yet unknown executive jobs of tomorrow. This book explores the significant recent growth of these degrees in England in order to address an enduring problem for higher education: the relationship between meritocracy and elitism. Against the view that the former is a myth providing rhetorical cover for the latter, it argues that these are two entangled, but discrete, value systems. Sociology must now pay attention to how students and academics attempt to disentangle them.

Book General Education Essentials

Download or read book General Education Essentials written by Paul Hanstedt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Education Essentials "Full-time and part-time faculty in any discipline and at any size campus with any type of mission can pick up this volume and learn something that will help her or him improve teaching and learning.???"—From the Foreword by Terrel L. Rhodes, vice president for Curriculum, Quality, and Assessment, Association of American Colleges and Universities Every year, hundreds of small colleges, state schools, and large, research-oriented universities across the United States (and, increasingly, Europe and Asia) revisit their core and general education curricula, often moving toward more integrative models. And every year, faculty members who are highly skilled in narrowly defined fields ask two simple questions: "Why?" and "How is this going to affect me?" General Education Essentials seeks to answer these and other questions by providing a much-needed overview of and a rationale for the recent shift in general education curricular design, a sense of how this shift can affect a faculty member's teaching, and an understanding of how all of this might impact course and student assessment. Filled with examples from a variety of disciplines that will spark insights, General Education Essentials explores the techniques that can be used to ensure that students are gaining the skills they need to be perceptive scholars and productive citizens. "This is THE ONE BOOK for academics to get up to speed about reforming general education." —Jerry Gaff, senior scholar, Association of American Colleges and Universities
