Book excerpt: Experiments are described which use an exclusively chemical system to generate the necessary reagents and energy transfer partners required for production of the a 1 Delta and b 1 Sigma + electronic excited states of the NF molecule. The purpose is to assess the potential for the development of an electronic transition chemical laser operating on the NF transitions at wavelengths of 874 nm or 529 nm. In the first of these experiments, staged combustion in a laser cavity is employed by adding a second mixer downstream from the cavity mixer in a conventional, supersonic, diffusion mixing HF chemical laser. This allows for the mixing of F-atoms, H2, and N2F4 the starting reagents required in the NF system. The second set of experiments utilized a tristream HF chemical laser nozzle which allows the three reagents F-atoms, H2, and N2F4 to be mixed in the throat of a supersonic slit nozzle. In both sets of experiments, thermal dissociation of N2F4 was the limitation for the final concentration of NF excited states. In both experiments the quenching of NF excited states is slow.

Book excerpt: Studies directed toward the development of a chemically pumped electronic transition laser are described. A small-scale HF/DF laser device was used to study excited state production in hydrogen-fluorine reactive flows. The number densities of the A doublet pi and x doublet sigma states of CN in hydrogen-fluorine cyanogen compound flames were measured. It was concluded that a population inversion between these two states was not achieved even though extremely high densities of the A doublet pi state of CN were formed. The pure chemical production of the b singlet sigma plus and a singlet delta states of NF was also demonstrated. For these studies, fluorine atoms formed in the precombustor of the laser were mixed with hydrogen to produce hydrogen atoms. These hydrogen atoms then reacted with NF2 radicals produced by the heating of N2F4 to produce the NF excited states. The densities measured were too low for laser production. However, the system may be scalable to laser proportions. (Author).
