Book Technology and Environment

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academy of Engineering
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1989-02-01
  • ISBN : 030904426X
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Technology and Environment written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology and Environment is one of a series of publications designed to bring national attention to issues of the greatest importance in engineering and technology during the 25th year of the National Academy of Engineering. A "paradox of technology" is that it can be both the source of environmental damage and our best hope for repairing such damage today and avoiding it in the future. Technology and Environment addresses this paradox and the blind spot it creates in our understanding of environmental crises. The book considers the proximate causes of environmental damageâ€"machines, factories, cities, and so onâ€"in a larger societal context, from which the will to devise and implement solutions must arise. It helps explain the depth and difficulty of such issues as global warming and hazardous wastes but also demonstrates the potential of technological innovation to have a constructive impact on the planet. With a range of data and examples, the authors cover such topics as the "industrial metabolism" of production and consumption, the environmental consequences of the information era, and design of environmentally compatible technologies.

Book Advanced Fossil Energy Licensing of Patented Laboratory Inventions and Considerations for Maintaining US Competitiveness in Potentially Transformational Research Areas

Download or read book Advanced Fossil Energy Licensing of Patented Laboratory Inventions and Considerations for Maintaining US Competitiveness in Potentially Transformational Research Areas written by Edward Carr and published by Nova Snova. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The government documents included in this book are comprised of reports and testimonies from June 2018 to September 2018 on research and development in the United States. The first report examines research and development projects started from 2010 through 2017 on advanced fossil energy. For more than 100 years, three fossil fuel sources coal, oil and natural gas have made up at least 80% of total US energy consumption. While fossil fuels are associated with some negative environmental impacts such as carbon dioxide emissions, the predominance of coal, oil and natural gas is likely to continue into the future. The second report focuses on considerations for maintaining US competitiveness in Quantum Computing, Synthetic Biology and other potentially transformational research advances. Federal support in such areas can accelerate innovation and drive technological advances and promote US competitiveness in the global economy. The third and final report focuses on additional actions needed to improve licensing of patented laboratory inventions. The GAO was asked to review agency practices for managing inventions developed at federal labs, with a particular focus on patent licensing. This report examines the challenges in licensing patents and steps take to address and report them.

Book Still Not Getting Energy Prices Right A Global and Country Update of Fossil Fuel Subsidies

Download or read book Still Not Getting Energy Prices Right A Global and Country Update of Fossil Fuel Subsidies written by Ian Parry and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a comprehensive global, regional, and country-level update of: (i) efficient fossil fuel prices to reflect their full private and social costs; and (ii) subsidies implied by mispricing fuels. The methodology improves over previous IMF analyses through more sophisticated estimation of costs and impacts of reform. Globally, fossil fuel subsidies were $5.9 trillion in 2020 or about 6.8 percent of GDP, and are expected to rise to 7.4 percent of GDP in 2025. Just 8 percent of the 2020 subsidy reflects undercharging for supply costs (explicit subsidies) and 92 percent for undercharging for environmental costs and foregone consumption taxes (implicit subsidies). Efficient fuel pricing in 2025 would reduce global carbon dioxide emissions 36 percent below baseline levels, which is in line with keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees, while raising revenues worth 3.8 percent of global GDP and preventing 0.9 million local air pollution deaths. Accompanying spreadsheets provide detailed results for 191 countries.
