Book How to Improve Your Pointe Range Safely

Download or read book How to Improve Your Pointe Range Safely written by Lisa Howell and published by . This book was released on 2018-11 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note that purchase of this hard copy manual does not give you access to the online video course. This must be purchased separately on www.theballetblog.com. Many dancers struggle with achieving a nice line of their foot and ankle, and will often do anything to make it better. Unfortunately, many of the things that dancers do to try to improve their pointe range are potentially harmful. This includes things like stretching your feet under a piano, and using any kind of foot stretching device. In my opinion, pushing your body in the direction you want it to go is usually the slowest and most dangerous way of getting there, and this definitely applies when working with pointe range. Forcefully stretching feet usually stretches what is already mobile, rather than targeting the elements that are actually restricting your range, so will often not give you the result you are after. If you currently have any pain when pointing your feet, I definitely recommend an assessment with a qualified health professional before commencing the program. If you experience any pain with any of the exercises, please discontinue that exercise immediately, and seek help. Often pushing into pain will make it worse, so I DO NOT support the "No Pain, No Gain" theory. This does not work when working on pointe range! To really improve your pointe range and achieve your ultimate potential it is essential to understand exactly where pointe range comes from, and where you are restricted. Every foot is different, and so the techniques that will improve it are different. When I teach dancers the exercises in this program, I recommend that they just do one foot initially, and assess the foot by doing some double leg rises in between each technique. This allows you to work out which techniques really work for you, so that you can refine the process to your individual requirements. As you discover each element that makes your foot feel good, star it on your chart, so that you can work out the most efficient, yet most effective program for your feet. One of the most important elements on achieving your ultimate pointe range is your ability to use it, so please make sure to progressively work on your strength with the exercises at the end of the program. Most people have more range than they can use, so I always focus on strengthening someone's current range before worrying too much about increasing it. You may likely find that as your strength improves - so does your range!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book A Body of Work

Download or read book A Body of Work written by David Hallberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hallberg, the first American to join the famed Bolshoi Ballet as a principal dancer and the dazzling artist The New Yorker described as “the most exciting male dancer in the western world,” presents a look at his artistic life—up to the moment he returns to the stage after a devastating injury that almost cost him his career. Beginning with his real-life Billy Elliot childhood—an all-American story marred by intense bullying—and culminating in his hard-won comeback, Hallberg’s “moving and intelligent” (Daniel Mendelsohn) memoir dives deep into life as an artist as he wrestles with ego, pushes the limits of his body, and searches for ecstatic perfection and fulfillment as one of the world’s most acclaimed ballet dancers. Rich in detail ballet fans will adore, Hallberg presents an “unsparing…inside look” (The New York Times) and also reflects on universal and relatable themes like inspiration, self-doubt, and perfectionism as he takes you into daily classes, rigorous rehearsals, and triumphant performances, searching for new interpretations of ballet’s greatest roles. He reveals the loneliness he felt as a teenager leaving America to join the Paris Opera Ballet School, the ambition he had to tame as a new member of American Ballet Theatre, and the reasons behind his headline-grabbing decision to be the first American to join the top rank of Bolshoi Ballet, tendered by the Artistic Director who would later be the victim of a vicious acid attack. Then, as Hallberg performed throughout the world at the peak of his abilities, he suffered a crippling ankle injury and botched surgery leading to an agonizing retreat from ballet and an honest reexamination of his entire life. Combining his powers of observation and memory with emotional honesty and artistic insight, Hallberg has written a great ballet memoir and an intimate portrait of an artist in all his vulnerability, passion, and wisdom. “Candid and engrossing” (The Washington Post), A Body of Work is a memoir “for everyone with a heart” (DC Metro Theater Arts).
