Book Advanced Space Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Advanced Space Propulsion Systems written by Martin Tajmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space propulsion systems have a great influence on our ability to travel to other planets or how cheap a satellite can provide TV programs. This book provides an up-to-date overview of all kinds of propulsion systems ranging from classical rocket technology, nuclear propulsion to electric propulsion systems, and further to micro-, propellantless and even breakthrough propulsion, which is a new program under development at NASA. The author shows the limitations of the present concepts and how they could look like in the future. Starting from historical developments, the reader is taken on a journey showing the amazing technology that has been put on hold for decades to be rediscovered in the near future for questions like how we can even reach other stars within a human lifetime. The author is actively involved in advanced propulsion research and contributes with his own experience to many of the presented topics. The book is written for anyone who is interested in how space travel can be revolutionized.

Book Comparison of Advanced Propulsion Concepts for Deep Space Exploration

Download or read book Comparison of Advanced Propulsion Concepts for Deep Space Exploration written by W. E. Moeckel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations and charts are presented that permit rapid estimation of propulsion-system performance requirements for some typical deep-space missions. A number of advanced propulsion concepts for which performance estimates are available are compared with respect to their capability for flyby, rendezvous, and roundtrip planetary missions. Based on these estimates, the gas-core nuclear fission rocket and the pulsed fusion rocket yield the fastest trip times to the near planets. For round trips to Jupiter and beyond, the controlled fusion rocket shows progressively superior capabilities. Several propulsion concepts based on use of impinging laser beams are found to be noncompetitive with the other advanced concepts for deep space missions. Requirements for attainment of interstellar distances within a human lifetime are found to be some orders of magnitude beyond the capabilities of any propulsion concepts for which performance estimates are now possible.

Book Advanced Propulsion Study

Download or read book Advanced Propulsion Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was tasked with the purpose of conducting a thorough literature and program search to carry out and document a technical assessment of the latest concepts in science and engineering that show promise of leading to a major advance in Earth-to-orbit (ETO) propulsion. The study also reviewed and evaluated a select number of credible far-term breakthrough propulsion physics concepts pertaining to R & D work done on or related to gravity/inertia modification, spacetime metric modification, and the extraction of energy from the space vacuum environment. The results of the study are presented and summarized in this report. A combined bibliography of advanced propulsion references was assembled and is presented. The report includes an overview of the recent history and present state-of-the-art of ETO launch vehicle and propulsion concepts. Also included is an outline and summary of the criteria and operative guidelines that the author used to examine, select and recommend advanced propulsion concepts. The author identified and selected five promising advanced propulsion concepts, and provides a detailed technical evaluation of their breakthrough potential for ETO propulsion.

Book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration

Download or read book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration written by Paul A. Czysz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated and expanded third edition of this book focuses on the multi-disciplinary coupling between flight-vehicle hardware alternatives and enabling propulsion systems. It discusses how to match near-term and far-term aerospace vehicles to missions and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, directly contributing to the next-generation space infrastructure, from space tourism to space exploration. This holistic treatment defines a mission portfolio addressing near-term to long-term space transportation needs covering sub-orbital, orbital and escape flight profiles. In this context, a vehicle configuration classification is introduced covering alternatives starting from the dawn of space access. A best-practice parametric sizing approach is introduced to correctly design the flight vehicle for the mission. This technique balances required mission with the available vehicle solution space and is an essential capability sought after by technology forecasters and strategic planners alike.
