Book excerpt: Adaptive antenna arrays use multiple antenna elements to form directional patterns in order to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. The antenna arrays also have the ability to detect the direction of incoming signals. These two capabilities allow a smart antenna system to adaptively beamform to more efficiently communicate between nodes. The direction-of-arrival estimation is a crucial component of the smart antenna system that uses open-loop adaptive approach. Historically this estimation has been accomplished using a personal computer. Implementing the estimation in the digital domain has the potential to provide a low cost and light weight solution due to recent advances in digital integrated circuit fabrication processes. Furthermore, digital circuitry allows for more sophisticated estimation algorithms to be implemented using the computational power of modern digital devices. This thesis presents the design and prototyping of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for a smart antenna system implemented on a reconfigurable digital hardware fabric. Two DOA estimation algorithms are implemented and the performance tradeoffs between a custom hardware approach and a microprocessor-based system are compared. The algorithms were implemented for a 5.8 GHz, 8-element circular antenna array and their functionality was verified using a testbed platform. The implementation and analysis presented in this work will aid system designers to understand the tradeoffs between implementing algorithms in custom hardware versus an embedded system and when a hybrid approach is more advantageous.

Book excerpt: The development and performance evaluation of new techniques for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, single-user beamforming (SUB), and multiuser beamforming (MUB) to be used in wireless communications are investigated. Two of the most commonly used beamformer configurations in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems, the chip-based (CB) and the symbol-based (SB) configurations for the base station (BS) receiver, are studied and their performance is evaluated. It is shown that using the CB configuration, different interfering components are rejected based on the spatial distribution of their power. In the SB configuration, spatial diversity is exploited after despreading and different interfering components are rejected based on their interfering strength which depends on both their power and code correlation with the signal of interest. For the SB configuration, more effort is applied to rejecting the interfering components with higher interfering strength and thus a more selective and efficient system is achieved. Detailed performance analysis and simulations show that in the presence of multipleaccess interference, the SB configuration can lead to a significant improvement in the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio relative to that achieved with the CB configuration for both asynchronous and synchronous DS-CDMA systems. A new technique for DOA estimation is proposed. The new technique, called subarray beamforming-based DOA (SBDOA) estimation, uses two virtual subarrays to form a signal whose phase relative to the reference signal is a function of the DOA. The DOA is then estimated based on the computation of the phase shift between the reference signal and the phaseshifted target signal. Since the phase-shifted target signal is obtained after interference rejection through beamforrning, the effect of co-channel interference on the estimation is significantly reduced. The proposed technique is computationally simple and the number of signal sources detectable is iii not bounded by the number of antenna elements used. Performance analysis and extensive simulations show that the proposed technique offers significantly improved estimation resolution, capacity, accuracy, and tracking capability relative to existing techniques. A new SUB algorithm is proposed for the downlink in wireless communication systems. The beam pattern at the BS is determined using a new optimality criterion which takes into consideration the fact that signals from the BS to different mobile stations (MSs) have different power and thus have different resistance to co-channel interference. In this way, the power of co-channel interference in the direction of an MS whose downlink signal has low resistance to co-channel interference can be significantly reduced. Simulation results show that the new algorithm leads to better performance than conventional algorithms in terms of system outage probability. A new MUB algorithm is proposed for joint beamforming and power control for the downlink in wireless communication systems. The optimization problem of optimal MUB is reformulated by modifying the constraints so that the weight vectors at the BS for different MSs are optimized in a feasible region which is a subset of the one of the original MUB problem. The downlink beamforming weight vectors of different MSs are then jointly optimized in a subspace instead of searching in the entire parameter space. Simulation results show that the modified optimization problem leads to solutions that satisfy the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio specification at each MS and, at the same time, the total power transmitted from the BS is very close to the optimal one. The solution of the modified optimization problem requires significantly less computation than that of the optimal MUB problem.

Billions of devices are connected and managed by wireless networks. At the same time, each device needs a high throughput to support applications such as voice, real-time video, movies, and games. Demands for wireless throughput and the number of wireless devices will always increase. In addition, there is a growing concern about energy consumption of wireless communication systems. Thus, future wireless systems have to satisfy three main requirements: i) having a high throughput; ii) simultaneously serving many users; and iii) having less energy consumption. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, where a base station (BS) equipped with very large number of antennas (collocated or distributed) serves many users in the same time-frequency resource, can meet the above requirements, and hence, it is a promising candidate technology for next generations of wireless systems. With massive antenna arrays at the BS, for most propagation environments, the channels become favorable, i.e., the channel vectors between the users and the BS are (nearly) pairwisely orthogonal, and hence, linear processing is nearly optimal. A huge throughput and energy efficiency can be achieved due to the multiplexing gain and the array gain. In particular, with a simple power control scheme, Massive MIMO can offer uniformly good service for all users. In this dissertation, we focus on the performance of Massive MIMO. The dissertation consists of two main parts: fundamentals and system designs of Massive MIMO. In the first part, we focus on fundamental limits of the system performance under practical constraints such as low complexity processing, limited length of each coherence interval, intercell interference, and finite-dimensional channels. We first study the potential for power savings of the Massive MIMO uplink with maximum-ratio combining (MRC), zero-forcing, and minimum mean-square error receivers, under perfect and imperfect channels. The energy and spectral efficiency tradeoff is investigated. Secondly, we consider a physical channel model where the angular domain is divided into a finite number of distinct directions. A lower bound on the capacity is derived, and the effect of pilot contamination in this finite-dimensional channel model is analyzed. Finally, some aspects of favorable propagation in Massive MIMO under Rayleigh fading and line-of-sight (LoS) channels are investigated. We show that both Rayleigh fading and LoS environments offer favorable propagation. In the second part, based on the fundamental analysis in the first part, we propose some system designs for Massive MIMO. The acquisition of channel state information (CSI) is very importantin Massive MIMO. Typically, the channels are estimated at the BS through uplink training. Owing to the limited length of the coherence interval, the system performance is limited by pilot contamination. To reduce the pilot contamination effect, we propose an eigenvalue-decomposition-based scheme to estimate the channel directly from the received data. The proposed scheme results in better performance compared with the conventional training schemes due to the reduced pilot contamination. Another important issue of CSI acquisition in Massive MIMO is how to acquire CSI at the users. To address this issue, we propose two channel estimation schemes at the users: i) a downlink "beamforming training" scheme, and ii) a method for blind estimation of the effective downlink channel gains. In both schemes, the channel estimation overhead is independent of the number of BS antennas. We also derive the optimal pilot and data powers as well as the training duration allocation to maximize the sum spectral efficiency of the Massive MIMO uplink with MRC receivers, for a given total energy budget spent in a coherence interval. Finally, applications of Massive MIMO in relay channels are proposed and analyzed. Specifically, we consider multipair relaying systems where many sources simultaneously communicate with many destinations in the same time-frequency resource with the help of a massive MIMO relay. A massive MIMO relay is equipped with many collocated or distributed antennas. We consider different duplexing modes (full-duplex and half-duplex) and different relaying protocols (amplify-and-forward, decode-and-forward, two-way relaying, and one-way relaying) at the relay. The potential benefits of massive MIMO technology in these relaying systems are explored in terms of spectral efficiency and power efficiency.

Due to noise and interfering sources, accurate parameter estimation is a difficult task. By using array of sensors, it is possible to mitigate the noise problems. By combining the sensors' outputs in an efficient method, array processing results in an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio much better than that of a single sensor's output. Multiple sensors can be used for estimating parameters of more than one signal. Using beamforming techniques, the array can steer electronically rather than looking for different sources by mechanical movement. Spatial filtering is carried out using beamforming to separate different signals having same frequency but different spatial locations. This thesis deals with different beamforming techniques for DOA estimation. High resolution techniques such as Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) and Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Techniques (ESPRIT) which are subspace based techniques are also discussed.

Array signal processing plays a crucial role when it comes to direction of arrival(DOA) estimation using spectral analysis. The objective is to discuss the methods used to estimate the signal arriving from a desired direction in the presence of noise and interfering signals. The sensor array collects spatial samples of propagating wave elds, which are processed using dierent spectral analysis algorithms. We discuss the array models on which direction nding algorithms are based. We review the non-parametric methods and subspace-based algorithms for DOA estimation. Non-parametric algorithms includes Conventional beamforming and Capon's method whereas under subspace-based algorithm we discuss the MUSIC method. We review the performance and limitations of these methods. A user interface in Labview is used for analyzing the performance. This thesis provides an overview of Convention beamforming method, Capon's method and the MUSIC method for DOA estimation.
