Book Advanced Diagnostics for Reacting Flows

Download or read book Advanced Diagnostics for Reacting Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop advanced laser-based techniques for non-intrusive measurements relevant to air-breathing combustion. In general, the program emphasizes spectrally-resolved absorption using tunable laser sources and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), conducted using either near-infrared or ultraviolet laser sources. Detailed below is progress on the exploration of IR PLIF as a diagnostic for imaging IR-active gases and on the suitability of pentanone as an alternative flow tracer to acetone for PLIF imaging. Furthermore, a novel absorption sensor for NO2 at temperatures up to 1900 K has been developed, and continuing work is reported on the spectroscopy of high-pressure gases.

Book Laser Diagnostics for Reacting Flows

Download or read book Laser Diagnostics for Reacting Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced optical diagnostic techniques relevant to propulsion were investigated. The techniques studied were based on laser spectroscopy, with emphasis on spectrally-resolved absorption and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Laser sources included tunable cw near-infrared diode lasers and tunable (or fixed-wavelength) pulsed lasers operated at ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The cw lasers were spectrally narrow, allowing study of innovative diagnostics based on spectral lineshapes, while the pulsed lasers provided intense bursts of photons needed for techniques based on LIF. Accomplishments of note included: (1) development of a new imaging diagnostic based on infrared planar laser-induced fluorescence (IR PLIF), (2) investigations of quantitative ultraviolet (UV) PLIF of NO and CO2 in high-pressure combustion environments, (3) the development of a new temperature diagnostic using UV absorption of CO2 for high-temperature combustion environments, (4) development of advanced wavelength-multiplexed diode laser absorption sensing of non-uniform temperature distributions, gas temperature in scramjet flows, and tunable mid-IR-based fuel sensing, and (5) further development of quantitative tracers to image fuel distribution using ketones and the aromatic toluene. The full spectrum of results was published in thirty-eight papers in the AIAA and peer reviewed literature, seven PhD theses, and forty-three presentations and invited lectures.

Download or read book Combustings Flow Diagnostics written by D.F.G. Durão and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of papers prepared for and presented at a NATO sponsored Advanced Study Institute which was held in Montechoro, Portugal during the period 16-27 April, 1990. This Institute was attended by approximately ninety delegates from fifteen countries and followed from a related Institute held in Vimeiro, Portugal in 1987 (see the book entitled "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", edited by D. F. G. Dur~o, J. H. Whitelaw and P. O. Witzel. The purposes of the first Institute related closely to instrumentation for use in gas-turbine combustors and the cylinders of internal-combustion engines. These topics were also addressed in the second Institute, though in a manner which was wider ranging and chosen to demonstrate and explain the development and application of measurement methods to combusting flows in general. The papers contained in this boo~ were selected to provide the reader with a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the variety of experimental techniques available to measure in combusting flows. Included are discussions of their range and applicability, potential accuracy and ease of use. Thus, the first paper provides a brief overview and the second an indication of those aspects of combustion which should influence the choice of flow property to be measured and the technique to be used.

Book excerpt: The overall goal of the research was to establish a strong foundation for understanding and predicting the interaction of fluid mechanical processes with chemical reactions in high speed flows. To accomplish this goal, expertise in chemical kinetics, experimental fluid mechanics and combustion, and computational fluid mechanics were brought together to make a systematic attack on turbulent reacting flows at high speed. In particular, the following tasks were established Task 1: High Speed Flow Experiments Including Mixing and Heat Release Task 2: Fundamental Combustion Experiments and Modeling Task 3: The Development and Application of Advanced Optical Diagnostics Task 4: Numerical Simulation Of Reacting Flows At High Speed The report summarizes the goals of the research and the progress made in each of these tasks.

Book Advanced Laser Diagnostics Development for the Characterization of Gaseous High Speed Flows

Download or read book Advanced Laser Diagnostics Development for the Characterization of Gaseous High Speed Flows written by Rodrigo Sanchez-Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of high-speed flows represents a challenging problem in the fluid dynamics field due to the presence of chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects. Hypersonic flights, where speeds reach Mach 5 and above, are particularly influenced by these effects, resulting in a direct impact on the flow and consequently on the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle traveling at these speeds. The study of hypersonic flow conditions requires the experimental capability of determining local temperatures, pressures and velocities using non-intrusive techniques. Furthermore, the simultaneous measurement of two or more variables in a complex flow boosts the amount of information that is obtained since valuable correlations can be established. This research includes the design, construction and characterization of a hypersonic flow apparatus explicitly intended as a tool for advanced laser diagnostics development. This apparatus is characterized by its pulsed operation mode that translates into a significant reduction in mass flow rates and can be operated for long periods at Mach numbers ranging from 2.8 to 6.2. The flow conditions during the uniform flow time interval of each pulse vary by less than 1%, generating a flow of sufficient quality for quantitative measurements. The development of a laser diagnostic technique, the VENOM technique, which is a non-intrusive method to provide simultaneous 2-D measurements of the mean and instantaneous fluctuations in two-component velocity and temperature is also presented. This technique represents the first single diagnostic capable of instantaneous two-component velocimetry and thermometry in a gaseous flow field by combining two Nitric Oxide Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence methods: two-component Molecular Tagging Velocimetry and two-line thermometry, employing the nascent NO(v"=1) arising from the NO2 photodissociation as a molecular tracer. The VENOM technique is expected to be not only applicable to cold high-speed flows, which is the focus of the present work, but also to combustion and other reactive or high-enthalpy flow fields.
