This book was released on 1999-07-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in materials science and engineering continues to have a significant impact on the development of new or improved catalysts, in particular in the areas of synthesis, manufacture, characterization and shaping. Catalysts, in turn, are of crucial importance in increasing the selectivity and energy efficiency of the many conversion processes used in the oil refining, petrochemical, natural gas and fine-chemical industries. In addition, catalysts play an important role in solving environmental problems. This volume focuses on advanced materials for catalysis and provides a multidisciplinary forum for chemists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, physicists and theorists to present and discuss the results in the field. Emphasis is on advanced catalytic materials rather than the application of known materials to new reactions. Topics include: monoliths; nitrides; oxides; catalytic combustion; photocatalysis; theoretical studies; catalyst characterization; catalyst modifications and catalyst synthesis.

Book Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices Volume 559

Download or read book Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices Volume 559 written by Timothy J. Bunning and published by . This book was released on 1999-08-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal (LC) materials and devices play a central role in numerous established and emerging technologies. This book focuses on several large areas of research including polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology and twisted smectic materials and applications, as well as nontraditional LC materials and applications. Various aspects of liquid crystal composite technology are featured. Of note is the work concentrating on the use of holography to imprint information into thin films of these systems. Three different approaches for employing holography with liquid crystal materials are discussed. In the ferroelectric liquid crystal arena, the intricacies of different chiral smectic-C architectures are described using detailed X-ray structural experiments on freestanding films. The differences between a molecule and a phase are explored. A number of nondisplay applications using this class of materials are presented and include topics such as adaptive optics, real-time holography and fiber-to-fiber interconnects. Also discussed are glass-forming liquid crystalline films and their ability to polarize photoluminescent emission, their utility in the fabrication of mid-wavelength infrared polarizers, and their utility in the fabrication of bistable electro-optical elements and broadband reflectors.

The focus moves from classes of materials to nanostructure control and modification, to synthesis strategies, to industrial applications and devices. Topics include: carbon; carbides and nitrides; oxides; mesoporous materials; monoliths, foams, films and membranes; synthesis and design; novel synthesis methods and industrial application and devices.
