Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the factors that influence young adults' (aged 18 to 24) reading experiences, reading habits and behavior, and desire to read. Three research questions guided this study: (a) How do young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 describe the factors that influence their reading experiences? (b) How do participants describe the effect of factors on their reading habits and behavior? (c) How do participants describe the effect of factors on their personal desire to read? Participants included young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. Data collection methods included an Adult Reading Motivation Scale, individual interviews, and a focus group interview. Data analysis methods included bracketing, horizonalization, establishing patterns, textural description, structural description, and describing the essence of participants' experiences. Findings yielded the emerging four themes: (a) The factor of the self in conjunction with reading experiences, (b) The factor of other people in conjunction with reading experiences, (c) The factor of teaching and learning in conjunction with reading experiences, and (d) The factor of forced reading.

How can reading skill best be measured-what standardized instruments and observational techniques are most useful? The large volume of textbooks and scholarly books that issue forth each year is clear evidence of the dynamic nature of the field. The purpose of this volume is to survey some of the best work going on in the field today and reflect what we know about reading as it unfolds across the life span. Reading is clearly an activity that spans each of our lives. Chapter I provides the rationale for conducting a study of literacy proficiencies of young adults aged 21 to 25. The purpose and conceptual framework of the research are set against a brief discussion of prior assessment efforts. Chapter II reviews the instrumentation and methodology (focusing on the assessment design), the data collection activities, the scoring and entry of data, and the scaling of the simulation tasks. Major sections of Chapter III deal with the dimensionality of literacy skills, scaling the adult literacy tasks, and describing and anchoring the literacy scales. Chapter IV profiles proficiencies for the total group of young adults assessed on each of three literacy scales. Chapter V compares young adults with in-school populations and describes performance at five levels of reading proficiency.
