This approach leads to the presentation of precise models of performance on a number of tasks derived from a set of critical quantitative concepts: elementary quantification, number concepts, conservation and transitivity. These models encompass both early and late developmental stages, and a process model of the developmental mechanism itself is outlined. Here is one of the first attempts to apply the information-processing view of cognitive psychology to developmental issues raised by empirical work in the Piagetian tradition. It includes an extensive analysis of the processing demands of several of the classic tasks and describes the development of a system capable of performing a wide range of other tasks, including the ability to be self-modifying. It provides an introduction to general concepts and detailed properties of cognitive models stated as production systems. It will be most valuable for students in cognitive development and related courses in developmental, cognitive, and educational psychology, as well as computer science.

Despite these differences, brain tissues are sufficiently uniform in the fact that they can engage in various types of processing. How can functionally different kinds of processes, such as verbal memory and reasoning, visual and auditory memory, and mental imagery, all be supported by the relatively uniform electrochemical activity of a brain's neurons? How are they appropriately segregated and integrated as needed? In Aging, Representation, and Thought, Matthew J. Sharps provides an empirically based, functional answer to what is, from the standpoint of modern cognitive psychology, a critical theoretical issue.Sharps argues that the crucial factor is the degree to which information is subjected to processing that is more gestalt or feature-intensive in nature. Sharps shows that purely gestalt processing deals with information in large "chunks," providing for relatively little incisive analysis. Purely feature-intensive processing, on the other hand, tends to ignore the overall nature and context of information in favor of comparatively minute analyses. It provides for relatively comprehensive analysis, but also for slow, cumbersome processing. Neither process, however, works in isolation, and Sharps demonstrates how information processing occurs on a continuum between the two extremes.Sharps' theoretical perspective is amply borne out by the results of specific experiments in all of the cognitive realms he addresses. He provides relatively comprehensive explanations for a variety of phenomena including the diminution of specific cognitive processes with age, and errors in eyewitness memory, reasoning, and decision-making at all levels of human activity. Aging, Representation, and Thought will be of interest to psychologists, students of adult development and aging, and management specialists.

Book excerpt: Executive functions (EF) continue to be one of the more difficult processes to understand, yet researchers agree that they are critical to our ability to successfully negotiate the complex tasks of day-to-day living. Current models of EF exist in the fields of cognitive psychology, development psychology, and neuropsychology, though these models often contradict each other and raise more questions than answers. The current study expands on existing knowledge by investigating the role of the underlying cognitive processes of EF. Specifically, this study examined the influence of short-term memory (STM) and information processing speed (IPS) on inhibition, switching, and planning abilities. Both STM and IPS have been linked to higher-level EF but have not been investigated in a comprehensive study of EF with a non-clinical population. Using hierarchical regression, STM did not predict EF performance above and beyond working memory (WM). Additional analyses were conducted to determine if STM affected EF indirectly by way of WM. Tests of the indirect effect of STM on each EF through WM, supported this claim. These results question the role of a storage system distinct from that which is included in the WM system. Additional hierarchical regressions found that IPS did not significantly predict either inhibition or switching when controlling for WM. However, IPS was a significant predictor of planning ability. This result supports a developmental understanding of EF whereby functions are related to each other in line with their developmental trajectory. Implications of these findings are discussed along with limitations and opportunities for future research.
