Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this volume results become generally available of a recent conference that was the first to discuss properties of isolated heart muscle cells from the adult myocardium as a new cardio logical research tool. The conference was held as an International Erwin Riesch Symposium un der the auspices of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fUr Herz- und Kreislaufforschung at Spangenberg Castle, March 22-25, 1984. It was made possible through funding by the Erwin Riesch Foun dation and the Bayer AG which deserve our gratitude for their generosity. It may not be fully reflected in this collection of papers that the atmosphere of this meeting was unique. The reason for this resided apparently in the still rudimentary experiences with the adult cardiocyte model that is now widely acknowledged to be very promising. Thus, quite basic inter ests brought together experts from different biological disciplines who in respect to this new mod el were all still "beginners". It was noteworthy that such common interests exerted a unifying effect upon otherwise rather separated fields of science. The main task of the years to come will certainly consist in improving isolation and culturing conditions for adult myocytes in order to fully establish the isolated cell model in heart research

Book Cardiomyocytes in Health and Disease

Download or read book Cardiomyocytes in Health and Disease written by Chandrasekharan C. Kartha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a treatise on cardiomyocytes, the most important cell for the contractile function of the heart. There has been significant progress in our understanding of the function-related structure, developmental processes and their determinants, mechanisms of cell cycle regulation, post-natal growth, energy metabolism, and reversible and irreversible response of cardiomyocytes to diverse forms of physiological stress and injury. There is also more clarity on the alterations in the biological mechanisms in cardiomyocytes that lead to pathological states and the changes in the cells that occur secondary to disease conditions. Thanks to these advances in knowledge, there have been great gains in attempts to identify disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets for better management of patients with heart diseases. Possibilities to induce regeneration or proliferation of cardiomyocytes and thus repair and or regenerate the damaged heart are also on the horizon.

Book Heart Regeneration Stem Cells And Beyond

Download or read book Heart Regeneration Stem Cells And Beyond written by Felix B Engel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injured mammalian hearts do not regenerate but scar. This is a major medical problem, as ischemic heart disease is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Essential clues for human heart repair are uncovered when zebrafish and newt are found to regenerate cardiac muscle after injury. This book presents the major advances of the last decade in the field of cardiac regeneration. These recent advances include: demonstration that zebrafish, a genetically tractable system, can regenerate heart; the identification of several new stem cell populations in the heart; demonstration that stem cells can be used to improve heart function; and demonstration that induction of cardiomyocyte proliferation is a realistic future option to repair injured hearts. This book also provides detailed reviews of the research on model organisms capable of heart regeneration as well as innovative translational research to achieve regeneration in mammals, that comprises work on blood born stem cells, endogenous cardiac stem cells, paracrine factors, reawakening of cardiomyocyte proliferation, and bioengineering. More importantly, the book, in the concluding chapter, dovetails the studies with a comprehensive overview of clinical trials.

Book Stem Cells and Aging

    Book Details:
  • Author : Surajit Pathak
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2021-03-17
  • ISBN : 0128204133
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Stem Cells and Aging written by Surajit Pathak and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stem Cells and Aging covers what is known about the effect of time and age on the basic units of life, which are the corresponding tissue-specific or adult stem cells. Even though the concept of stem cells was introduced nearly a century ago by Alexander Maximow, modern stem-cell research began in 1963 when James Till, Ernest McCullough and Lou Siminovitch established assays to detect hematopoietic stem cells. In fact, given the importance of the aging-associated diseases, scientists have developed a keen interest in understanding the aging process as they attempt to define the role of dysfunctional stem cells in the aging process. With an aging population worldwide, understanding these age-related stem cell changes at a basic biology level and at the level of their influences for regenerative medicine is of interest and importance. There is increasing evidence that the aging process can have much adverse effects on stem cells. In the modern era, one of the emerging fields in treating human diseases is stem cell research, as stem cells have the remarkable potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Nevertheless, understanding the molecular mechanism involved in aging and deterioration of stem cell function is crucial in developing effective new therapies for aging. Serves as an ideal reference to guide investigators toward valuable answers to the problems of our aging population Addresses the effect of time and age on human stem cells Includes chapters from contributors exploring the biology of stem cell aging around the globe
