Book excerpt: The essays in this book focus on political strategies, pedagogical models, and community programs that enable adult ESL learners to become vital members of North American society. This is particularly important in our present time of contraction and downsizing in the education of non-native speakers. The authors represent a broad range of programs and perspectives, but they all have in common the goal of enabling both faculty and students to become full participants in our society and thereby to gain control over their futures. Readers of this book will develop an understanding of the ways in which innovative educators are creating strategies for maintaining language programs and services.

Download or read book Linguistic difficulties adult ESL users encounter in numeracy and mathematics written by Karen Dalton and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: Pass, Charles Darwin University, language: English, abstract: This literature review undertook a purposeful sample of outcomes based research literature from the preceding decade that highlighted the language difficulties adult ESL users experienced while learning numeracy and mathematics. The most identifiable areas of research to emerge are policies and frameworks, pedagogy, educational programmes and educational resources. Whilst the request from the American Institute for Research to explore the linguistic challenges adult ESL users encounter in numeracy remains relatively unexplored; there is a growing collection of research papers emerging that contemplate linguistic difficulties in this area as a peripheral issue not a central one.

Book Adult ESL Language and Literacy Instruction

Download or read book Adult ESL Language and Literacy Instruction written by National Center for ESL Literacy Education, Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Literacy Summit 2000 was convened in Washington, DC, to develop a national vision and plan of action for adult literacy in the United States. Following that meeting of literacy professionals from across the country, a group of professionals working in adult ESL education and research came together at the Teachers of English to Speakers of Others Languages (TESOL) convention in Vancouver, British Columbia, in March, 2000, to ensure that the needs of the large and growing population of adult English language learners are addressed in this action agenda. This discussion, which complements "From the Margins to the Mainstream: The Action Agenda for Literacy" (National Literacy Summit, 2000), focuses on the characteristics and needs of adults learning English as a second language, the programs that serve them, and the policies that affect them. Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) envisions a system for the education of adult English language learners that provides high quality language and literacy services for this linguistically and culturally diverse population. TESOL urges the United States to develop a system of high quality appropriate language and literacy services specifically tailored to the needs of adults learning English as an additional language. This system should be no less in quality, recognition, and support than the system in place for K-12 and higher education. The services developed within this system should support adults learning English, regardless of their language and cultural backgrounds and previous schooling, to accomplish their immediate and long-term educational goals and to make significant and discernible progress toward reaching their full potential in their roles in society. Adult ESL education must take place within a system that is on a par with K-12 and higher education in terms of status, infrastructure, attention, and financial support. This system consists of five critical components, which must work together toward the common goal: (Priority 1) Develop high quality programs that are responsive to the needs and goals of English language learners; (Priority 2) Create collaborations with organizations and institutions outside the instructional program; (Priority 3) Make policies at national (foreign and domestic), state, and local levels responsive to the current (and changing) population of adult English language learners, formulating and implementing them with involvement of all stakeholders; (4) Ensure that resources are available to implement high quality, effective programs and to conduct needed research; and (5) Establish research priorities related to adult ESL populations and earmark funding for adult ESL research in all national adult literacy initiatives. Ensure that the results of this research are clear, easily accessible, useful to practitioners, and clearly linked to the realities of practice.

Book Bringing Community to the Adult ESL Classroom

Download or read book Bringing Community to the Adult ESL Classroom written by Clarena Larrotta and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the concept of community building as a framework, this volume summarizes and updates readers on the state of adult English as a second language (ESL) education in the United States. It provides a complete description of this population of learners and their learning needs. The various chapters discuss possibilities for community building in the adult ESL classroom, combining research, theory, and practice. Community building is not a new topic; we often discuss it informally with our colleagues and students. However, scant written material exists-with a focus on adult ESL-documenting how it happens or reconciling theory with practitioners' experiences. In this volume, several practitioners and researchers explain the ways in which they use community-building principles in adult ESL settings. The authors' descriptions of applications of community-building principles can help other adult educators implement these ideas in their teaching practice. This is the 121st volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education is an indispensable series that explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

It's designed to be straight-forward and easy to use, so the teacher can pick it up and go into class with it with minimal preparation. This workbook focuses on getting ESL students of intermediate and advanced English levels to engage with each other, and the teacher, in the case of one-to-one classes, through activities and questions that promote discussion and decision-making. They will be challenged to think critically, and solve problems, all while using English as the mode of communication to deal with a variety of different tasks. What topics are included in this workbook? Arranged Marriages Helping the Poor Telling White Lies War Adoption Colonizing Mars An International One-Child Policy Living Together Before Marriage Dating a Colleague Moving Abroad Being Child-free Cloning Dating During High School Making Kids Earn Their Allowance Banning Smoking Going Completely Green in 5 Years Nuclear Weapons and Energy Open International Immigration Marrying Outside of Your Culture Harsher Punishments Dating Students Being Your Own Boss Divorce Dating Apps Using Tablets Instead of Textbooks Each topic, or unit, includes new vocabulary, discussion questions, activities for group- and pair-work, as well as statistics and a closing activity, or closing discussion questions. This workbook shines the most when used with groups of students, but can also be adapted to work well in one-to-one situations with VIP students (in the case of some language training schools) or private students. Author's Note: As a teacher myself, I can say that the Pros and Cons has been my longest running series, and it has proven to be popular at every language training school I've used it at, and the content has continuously evolved over the past five years. The students are actively engaged, and even the quietest students find that they have something that they want to contribute to the discussion and the activities. My classes tend to be made up of students from lower-intermediate to advanced, and from age 14 to 60, and all have been able to participate and contribute to the conversations, as well as have many opportunities to speak out and engage with others.

Book Multimodal Composing and Multiple Identity Mediations

Download or read book Multimodal Composing and Multiple Identity Mediations written by Beata Dolina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the experiences of adult ESL (English as a Second Language) learners in New York, paying particular attention to the relationship between their professional identities and multimodal composing practices in English classroom. The author uses an (auto-)ethnographic framework to investigate how previously-constructed identities of a professional nature aided the students in the design of multimodal texts including photographs and written material in English. This small-scale study is contextualised in relation to current research in the fields of multimodality, identity construction and teaching methodology, and the author also draws on Kress' theory of visual semiotics. Finally, the book provides detailed descriptions and suggestions for multimodal lessons which could be delivered in ESL classrooms in other settings, including multimodal roleplays, theatre games, and model discussion questions and answers. This book will be of interest to ESL/EFL and TESOL researchers and practitioners, as well as pre-service teachers and MA TESOL students.

Book Understanding Success and Failure in Adult ESL

Download or read book Understanding Success and Failure in Adult ESL written by Taewoong Kim and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the reasons why adult ESL learners drop out of their language classes and suggests explicit strategies for keeping students engaged. The most effective strategies may be personal rather than technical or curricular. Based on a study of a group of Mexican immigrants to the US, the author proposes that superación or ‘self-actualization’ is crucial to understanding the relative success of adult ESL learners. Learners’ decisions to drop out were not hasty or superficial but were based on a commonsense assessment concerning how the class might improve the quality of their lives. Those involved in delivering ESL to adult learners should stress the tangible, practical advantages that accrue with learning English, and at the same time strive to make instruction relevant.
