Book Kinetics of Metal Ion Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

Download or read book Kinetics of Metal Ion Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions written by Sotira Yiacoumi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a systematic presentation of theories concerning the adsorption of metal ions from aqueous solutions onto surfaces of natural and synthetic substances and to outline methods and procedures to estimate the extent and progress ofadsorption. As heavy metals and the problems associated with their transport and distribution are of serious concern to human health and the environment, the materials presented in this volume have both theoretical and practical significance. In writing this monograph, one ofour goals was to prepare a book useful to environmental workers and practicing engineers. For this reason, our presentation relies heavily on concepts commonly used in the environmental engineering literature. In fact, the volume was prepared for readers with a basic understanding of environmental engineering principles and some knowledge of adsorption processes. No prior familiarity with the ionic solute adsorption at solid-solution interfaces is assumed. Instead, introduction of the necessary background information was included. Generally speaking, metal ion adsorption may be studied in terms of three distinct but interrelated phenomena: surface ionization, complex formation, and the formation and presence of an electrostatic double layer adjacent to adsorbent surfaces. Analyses of these phenomena with various degrees of sophistication are xviii ADSORPTION OF METAL IONS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS presented, and their various combinations yield different models that describe metal ion adsorption.

Book Use of Silica supported Adsorbents Modified Silica Gel Modified Montmorillonite Ksf and Magnetite in the Remediation of Selected Heavy Metals from Aqueous Media

Download or read book Use of Silica supported Adsorbents Modified Silica Gel Modified Montmorillonite Ksf and Magnetite in the Remediation of Selected Heavy Metals from Aqueous Media written by Craig Alcindor Ivan Bowe and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Pollution of the earth's water resources, including freshwater sources such as lakes and rivers, by heavy metals have been a detriment to the environment for as long as the industrial age of man. As these metallic pollutants accumulate in the supply of precious groundwater and drinking water the need for clean-up technologies to combat the increasing threat is becoming of more importance to government and industry alike. Previous work has established the possibility of using known chelating agents, such as LIX-54 supported on silica gel in the removal of selected heavy metal ions such as copper(II), nickel(II), and cadmium(II) from standard aqueous solutions (Norris and coworkers, 1996). Remediation of heavy metals using coordinating agents such as dithiooxamides and aliphatic amines has also been an environmental cleanup technology that has proven to be effective in the uptake of selected heavy metals from aqueous media (Poore and coworkers, 1996).

Book Chemically Modified Silica Gel with 1 8 diaminoanthraquinone for Preconcentration of Heavy Metal Ions

Download or read book Chemically Modified Silica Gel with 1 8 diaminoanthraquinone for Preconcentration of Heavy Metal Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silica gel was chemically modified firstly with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane giving SiAP. the SiAP reacted subsequently with 1,8-diaminoanthraquinone obtaining SiDAAQ. The SiDAAQ was characterized by specific surface area analysis, IR-spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, elemental analysis and 13C-NMR. The adsorption properties of the SiDAAQ were studied using Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) in aqueous solutions with batch and column modes. The on-line preconcentration system coupled with FAAS for Pb(II) was investigated. The sorbed lead ions were directly eluted by 174 μL of 0.050 mol L−1 EDTA solution (pH5) at a flow rate of 5.0 mL min−1 to the nebulizer. The performance characteristics of the system were investigated under the optimum chemical and flow parameters using the solutions containing the spiked standard 100 and 300 μg L−1 Pb(II). The method detection limit of 20 μg L−1 with enrichment factor of 27 and the sample throughput of 40 h−1 at preconcentration time of 60 sec were obtained. The accuracy and precision evaluated as %recovery and %RSD (n = 10) were 100.8 and 10.8, respectively. The proposed system was successfully applied for the determination of trace levels of Pb(II) in water sample.

Book Decontamination of Heavy Metals

Download or read book Decontamination of Heavy Metals written by Jiaping Paul Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy metals, such as lead, chromium, cadmium, zinc, copper, and nickel, are important constituents of most living organisms, as well as many nonliving substances. Some heavy metals are essential for growth of biological and microbiological lives, yet their presence in excessive quantities is harmful to humans and interferes with many environmental processes. Heavy metals are also nonbiodegradable, making them more difficult to remediate. Decontamination of Heavy Metals: Processes, Mechanisms, and Applications tackles the subject of heavy metals in the environment, with special emphasis on their treatment, removal, recovery, disposal, management, and modeling. Concepts, Cutting-Edge Technologies, and Applications The book provides in-depth coverage of the major hazardous heavy metals that are found in water, land, and facilities and that have significant effects on public health and the environment. After an overview of heavy metal contamination, the text reviews the concepts and technologies of pollution prevention. It then examines technologies for metal decontamination, ranging from precipitation—which is the most commonly used—to cutting-edge technologies such as precipitation-crystallization, ion exchange, membrane filtration, and electrolysis. Mathematical models for metal removal and recovery are also included. Develop a Feasible Total Heavy Metal Control Program Complementing other books in the Advances in Industrial and Hazardous Wastes Treatment series, this volume presents important research related to the remediation of heavy metals. Extensive references are included for readers who want to trace, duplicate, or improve on a specific industrial hazardous waste treatment practice. A comprehensive handbook for environmental professionals, researchers, and students, it provides technical information to help readers develop a feasible total metal control program that can benefit both industry and local municipalities.
