Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to gain a fundamental understanding of adsorptive-adsorbent interactions and apply the information obtained to the rational design of new adsorbents tailored to specific adsorptives of interest, i. e., chemical warfare agents. To this end, a multiple equilibrium analysis model (MEA) has been developed and was used to interpret adsorption isotherms and show that the derived parameters are meaningful within the context of the model. Adsorptives were selected that vary in size, polarizability, polarity, acidity, and basicity to permit adsorbent characterization in terms of these physical properties. The equilibrium constants (K(i)'s), capacities (n(i)'s), and enthalpies obtained from the analysis of the varied adsorptives were then used to directly compare carbons, silicas, aluminas, amorphous silica-aluminas, and zeolites as adsorbent materials. The research has led to an increased understanding of the interactions between solids adsorbents and substrates in gas adsorption and catalysis.

This book has been organized to cover the different aspects of the chemistry of hydrogen peroxide. The various chapters into which the book is divided have been written critically by the authors with the general aim of stimulating new ideas and emphasizing those aspects that are likely to lead to new developments in organic synthesis in the coming future.

Since then, the electro organic chemistry has been studied extensively with the expectation that it is a new useful tool for finding novel reactions in organic synthesis. The purpose of this book is not to give a comprehensive survey of studies on electrochemical reactions of organic compounds but to show that the electro organic chemistry is indeed useful in organic synthesis. Thus, this book has been written under the following policies. (1) Since this monograph is mainly concerned with organic synthesis, only few studies carried out from the view point of electrochemical, theoretical, or analytical chemistry are mentioned. (2) Since electroorganic chemistry covers a great variety of reactions, the types of reactions described in this book are selected mainly with regard to their application in organic synthesis. Simple transformations of functional groups are only described in particular cases, and also some well established processes such as the Kolbe electrolysis, pinacolic coupling, and hydrodimerization are only briefly mentioned. (3) Since many reports have already been published for each type of these reactions, only a limited number of the relevant papers are cited in this book.
