Este interrogante ha llevado a los investigadores a tratar de desentrañar cuáles son los factores que determinan estos cambios y qué papel juegan la base biológica, los conocimientos y la educación, preguntándose cómo se construyen y organizan los conocimientos y la propia inteligencia durante el desarrollo del individuo. El intento de responder a estas incógnitas está en el origen de la psicología como ciencia y ha sido tarea principal de autores tan relevantes como Piaget y Vygotsky. La aparición de la moderna psicología cognitiva ha supuesto una revitalización de los estudios sobre el desarrollo intelectual, proporcionando nuevas herramientas teóricas y metodológicas, lo que ha permitido notables avances en nuestro conocimiento sobre cómo se producen los cambios de la inteligencia con la edad. Desarrollo y conocimiento presenta en forma clara y comprensible los orígenes, estado actual y perspectivas en el estudio y esclarecimiento del citado enigma, aportando una visión en la que se integran en forma crítica contribuciones teóricas diferentes.
