Book Philosophy and Friendship

Download or read book Philosophy and Friendship written by Sandra Lynch and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical exploration of the meaning and significance of friendship. This book explains the persistence of friendship today in the light of the history of philosophical approaches to the subject. It considers ideals of intimacy and fusion in the context of claims that such ideals are unrealistic and even dangerous. Cicero's scepticism about friendship in the public realm is compared with the Aristotelian view of friendship as a genuine political bond, and with Derrida's development of that view via an exploration of Aristotle's alleged and provocative announcement 'O my friends, there is no friend'. Tensions between love and respect, identity and difference, a focus on the self and a focus on the other are closely examined. From Aristotle to contemporary theorists, the book explores the conditions that enable the development of self-understanding in friendship, the delicate and unstable pairing of concepts like inclination and duty and distinctions between self-love, self esteem and self-concern in relations between friends.Key Features* Recognition of the variety of the term 'friend' in the history of philosophy* The treatment of the tension between identity and difference in relations between friends* Discussion of the contribution of friendship to self-understanding.

Download or read book Cambodge written by Penny Edwards and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-02-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This strikingly original study of Cambodian nationalism brings to life eight turbulent decades of cultural change and sheds new light on the colonial ancestry of Pol Pot’s murderous dystopia. Penny Edwards recreates the intellectual milieux and cultural traffic linking Europe and empire, interweaving analysis of key movements and ideas in the French Protectorate of Cambodge with contemporary developments in the Métropole. From the naturalist Henri Mouhot’s expedition to Angkor in 1860 to the nationalist Son Ngoc Thanh’s short-lived premiership in 1945, this history of ideas tracks the talented Cambodian and French men and women who shaped the contours of the modern Khmer nation. Their visions and ambitions played out within a shifting landscape of Angkorean temples, Parisian museums, Khmer printing presses, world’s fairs, Buddhist monasteries, and Cambodian youth hostels. This is cross-cultural history at its best. With its fresh take on the dynamics of colonialism and nationalism, Cambodge: The Cultivation of a Nation will become essential reading for scholars of history, politics, and society in Southeast Asia. Edwards’ nuanced analysis of Buddhism and her consideration of Angkor’s emergence as a national monument will be of particular interest to students of Asian and European religion, museology, heritage studies, and art history. As a highly readable guide to Cambodia’s recent past, it will also appeal to specialists in modern French history, cultural studies, and colonialism, as well as readers with a general interest in Cambodia.

Download or read book Three Temporal Kings written by Michal Deschausses and published by . This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern rendition of the quatrains of Nostradamus is offered after more than three decades of research. This clarification of the enigmatic verse of Nostradamus is the most comprehensive to date that brings forth the first true understanding - a connection and meaning for the verses not heretofore seen. Each of the verses of the quatrains of Nostradamus speaks about the rampant strategies of one of three Antichrists. Two of these Antichrists would dominate the human race culminating spiritual forces into the Third Antichrist - the One who would fully incarnate the supernatural forces of Satan ultimately torturing humanity in the great and final war against God bringing the End of Days and the cataclysmic changes ushering in a new age. The prophecies of Nostradamus have been in print for almost five hundred years - longer than any book except the Holy Bible. His prophecies are biblically sound. In each new generation people in nearly every nation have continued to pour over the verses of Nostradamus seeking higher truth and understanding. Nostradamus wrote poetic prophecy in the form of quatrains, four line stanzas filled with a medley of perplexing symbols and rhetoric. Each original chapter, called Centuries, contained one hundred quatrains. Even as John in Revelation, Nostradamus did not understand in high detail all the future modalities that he envisioned, and the use of symbolism allowed him to portray his visions without the limitation of mere words. In Century III, Verse 94, Nostradamus explained the fate of his work. He stated that for five centuries his verses would be shrouded in mystery. Then, in the twentieth century an interpreter would bring them to light and understanding. The quatrains of Nostradamus relay an important, divine message to humankind and contain highly moralistic, philosophical, and spiritual wisdom which cannot be ignored. Nostradamus was a prophetic messenger of the Divine Plan. The social, economic, political, and spiritual rewards make it evident that the Nostradamus verses are a divine gift in severe servitude to humanity. The primary purpose for Nostradamus' quatrains has always been to shed light upon written prophecies that were offered to the world in an effort to educate mankind in reference to human iniquities and the effects thereof rendered upon the world in which we live. But, even more, the verses were intended to help people reconnect to the Divine seeing that the spiritual world is a reality that we cannot ignore. Nostradamus wrote exclusively and specifically about Three Temporal Kings who would rise to power resulting from political events beginning in about 1700 A.D. These Antichrists would change the course of history and life on earth for beyond three hundred years until the biblical end of the world when the entire cosmic order would change into a new age. This message of the old prophet coincides directly with the messages of the honored biblical prophecies. Not even taking into account the fact of strong evidence that the quatrains are divine and intended to educate humans in reference to a higher evolutionary path, they have remained in print since the sixteenth century, are a vital part of literature today, and more than likely will be around for a very long time.

Book A Tremendous Thing

Download or read book A Tremendous Thing written by Gregory Jusdanis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why did you do all this for me?" Wilbur asked. "I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you.""You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing."—from Charlotte's Web by E. B. WhiteFriendship encompasses a wide range of social bonds, from playground companionship and wartime camaraderie to modern marriages and Facebook links. For many, friendship is more meaningful than familial ties. And yet it is our least codified relationship, with no legal standing or bureaucratic definition. In A Tremendous Thing, Gregory Jusdanis explores the complex, sometimes contradictory nature of friendship, reclaiming its importance in both society and the humanities today. Ranging widely in his discussion, he looks at the art of friendship and friendship in art, finding a compelling link between our need for friends and our engagement with fiction. Both, he contends, necessitate the possibility of entering invented worlds, of reading the minds of others, and of learning to live with people.Investigating the ethics, aesthetics, and politics of friendship, Jusdanis draws from the earliest writings to the present, from the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Iliad to Charlotte's Web and "Brokeback Mountain," as well as from philosophy, sociology, evolutionary biology, psychology, and political theory. He asks: What makes friends stay together? Why do we associate friendship with mourning? Does friendship contribute to the formation of political communities? Can friends desire each other? The history of friendship demonstrates that human beings are a mutually supportive species with an innate aptitude to envision and create ties with others. At a time when we are confronted by war, economic inequality, and climate change, Jusdanis suggests that we reclaim friendship to harness our capacity for cooperation and empathy.

Book Body Work

Download or read book Body Work written by Peter Brooks and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The desire to know the body is a powerful dynamic of storytelling in all its forms. Peter Brooks argues that modern narrative is intent on uncovering the body in order to expose a truth that must be written in the flesh. In a book that ranges widely through literature and painting, Brooks shows how the imagination strives to bring the body into language and to write stories on the body. From Rousseau, Balzac, Mary Shelley, and Flaubert, to George Eliot, Zola, Henry James, and Marguerite Duras, from Manet and Gauguin to Mapplethorpe, writers and artists have returned in fascination to the body, the inescapable other of the spirit. Brooks's deep understanding of psychoanalysis informs his demonstration of how the "epistemophilic urge"--the desire to know-guides fictional plots and our reading of them. It is the sexual body that furnishes the building blocks of symbolization, eventually of language itself-which then takes us away from the body. Yet mind and language need to recover the body, as an other realm that is primary to their very definition. Brooks shows how and why the female body has become the field upon which the aspirations, anxieties, and contradictions of a whole society are played out. And he suggests how writers and artists have found in the woman's body the dynamic principle of their storytelling, its motor force. This major book entertains and teaches: Brooks presumes no special knowledge on the part of his readers. His account proceeds chronologically from Rousseau in the eighteenth century forward to contemporary artists and writers. Body Work gives us a set of analytical tools and ideas-primarily from psychoanalysis, narrative and film studies, and feminist theory-that enable us to read modern narrative afresh.
