This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adoption of Improved Irrigation and Drainage Reduction Technologies in the Westside of the San Joaquin Valley, Vol. 3: A Model of Farm Organization, Levels of Complexity and Input Use When using economic classes as a mean to compare farm performances, Feder, Just and Zilberman (1985) argue that for example, the intensity of fertilizer and pesticide use shows a more confusing pattern of behavior between farms of different size. Schutjer and Van der Been (1977) reach a similar conclusion with regard to access to information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modeling Economic Management and Policy Issues of Water in Irrigated Agriculture

Download or read book Modeling Economic Management and Policy Issues of Water in Irrigated Agriculture written by Ariel Dinar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-08-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents models that characterize the relationships between quantity and quality of irrigation water application, and agricultural production and the environment. A comprehensive modeling approach addressing both the benefits of irrigation and the potential negative effects is introduced. Physical-biological concepts are combined with economic and engineering principles to demonstrate the usefulness of the model for analyzing various water management and policy issues. Decision makers on all levels should find the modeling approach interesting and useful in the management issues from the farm to national levels.

Book The Economics and Management of Water and Drainage in Agriculture

Download or read book The Economics and Management of Water and Drainage in Agriculture written by Ariel Dinar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan van Schilfgaarde, USDA Agricultural Research Service and National Research Council Committee on Irrigation-Induced Water Quality Problems In 1982, a startling discovery was made. Many waterbirds in Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge were dying or suffering reproductive failure. Located in the San Joaquin Valley (Valley) of California, the Kesterson Reservoir (Kesterson) was used to store agricultural drainage water and it was soon determined that the probable cause of the damage to wildlife was high concen trations of selenium, derived from the water and water organisms in the reservoir. This discovery drastically changed numerous aspects of water management in California, and especially affected irrigated agriculture. In fact, the repercussions spilled over to much of the Western United States. For a century, water development for irrigation has been a religiously pursued means for economic development of the West. The primary objective of the Reclamation Act of 1902 was, purportedly, the development ofirrigation water to support family farms which, in turn, would enhance the regional economy (Worster, 1985).

Book Salinity and Drainage in San Joaquin Valley California

Download or read book Salinity and Drainage in San Joaquin Valley California written by Andrew C. Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the history of irrigated agriculture and drainage in the San Joaquin Valley, and describes the hydrology and biogeochemical processes of salts and selenium, remediation technologies for salts and trace elements and policy and management options. The contents are comprised of fourteen chapter-length independent treatises, each depicting with fresh perspective a distinctive salinity drainage topic. The opening chapters detail the evolution of irrigated agriculture, and depict the geochemical and hydrological processes that define the San Joaquin Valley, including the physics, chemistry, and biology attributes that impact water management policies and strategies. Next, the contributors address the biogeochemistry of selenium, the role of plants in absorbing it from soils, and the processes involved in retaining and concentrating dissolved salts in drainage water. Further chapters describe on-farm and plot-level irrigation provisions to reduce agricultural drainage outputs and examine their effects on plant performance. This volume offers realistic policy analysis of water management options for irrigated agriculture in the Valley and assesses their respective outcomes, if implemented. Also included is an international perspective on the sustainability of irrigated agriculture there.

Book Water and Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Water and Sustainable Agriculture written by Iván Francisco García-Tejero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigated agriculture, a vital component of general agriculture, supplies fruits, vegetables, and cereals consumed by humans and grains fed to animals. Consequently, agriculture is the largest user of fresh water globally, and irrigation practices in many parts of the world are biologically, economically, and socially unsustainable. Water management should balance the need for agricultural water and the need for a sustainable environment. Water-use efficiency is the prime challenge in worldwide farming practices where problems of water shortages are widespread. Currently, agriculture is undergoing significant changes in innovative irrigation, fertilizer technology, and agronomic expertise. These elements constitute a vital platform for sustainable agricultural success and for preventing environmental damage. This review presents several processes linked to environmental irrigation, balancing environmental protection with improved agricultural production.

Book Adaptation and Resilience

Download or read book Adaptation and Resilience written by Bonnie G. Colby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America's arid southwest, climate change will occur in the context of already-keen competition for water for agriculture, urban growth, electricity generation, water-based recreation, and environmental protections. This book explores the challenges that climate change and variability pose for water and energy managers and users, communities, and policy makers in the arid Southwest and demonstrates the application of economic methods to address these challenges. It provides valuable tools for both those interested in resource management and climate change, and those seeking to understand how economic methods can be used to analyze contemporary social problems and craft appropriate responses. The book considers both adaptation to long-term climate change and more immediate issues of water and electricity management in the face of inter-annual climate variability and drought. Thus, no matter what one's perspective on long-run climate change projections, the book provides useful lessons for some of the region's most pressing resource management problems.
