Book What to Expect When Adopting

Download or read book What to Expect When Adopting written by Steven Needham and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK People choose to adopt a child for many different reasons. Whether you are unable to have biological children, or you want to add to the family that you already have, adoption can be an extremely rewarding experience. There are many factors to consider when you are deciding whether adoption is right for you. It is important to first examine your financial resources, your career path and your personal relationships before you choose to adopt a child. Adopting a child is one of the most generous things that you can do, but it is a process that also comes with many challenges and frustrations. If youve assessed your situation and decided to pursue an adoption, there are several different paths that you can take. You can use a qualified adoption agency in the United States to adopt a child. You may also want to consider options such as foster care adoptions, or conducting an independent adoption with the help of an attorney. International adoptions also provide a range of possibilities for prospective adoptive parents. It is vital that before you begin your journey with adoption, you understand the risks and benefits associated with the different types of adoptions before you decide the path that is best for your family. Adopting a child can be a long and expensive process that can also have serious emotional and psychological implications. Above all else, adopting a child is about giving love and opportunity to a child in need. Be sure to talk to all of the members of your family before deciding on adoption in order to understand any fears or concerns they may have about the process. The process of adopting a child can be frustrating, so it is important to learn as much as possible before you embark on this journey. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK According to AdoptiveFamilies.com, "Things are different now in the child welfare system - and that's good news for both kids and parents. 'It used to be that you had to be a foster parent first in order to adopt, but that's changed, ' says Rita Soronen, executive director for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. 'People can now state upfront that they want to be considered for adoption only." That makes for a quicker process, with fewer broken hearts along the way.'" The main goal of the Foster Care system is to return children to their biological parents whenever possible. However, approximately thirty percent of the children in Foster Care are not able to return to their homes, and these children need to be adopted. Currently, of the 425,000 children in foster care in the United States, about 115,000 of them are eligible for adoption... Buy a copy to keep reading! By doing so, couples will save time and money, reduce stress, and, most importantly, find a baby to adopt.

Book The Open Adoption Book

Download or read book The Open Adoption Book written by Bruce M. Rappaport and published by MacMillan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated for a New Paperback Edition, the Definitive Guide to Open Adoption, by the founder of the Open Adoption Movement The exploding popularity of open adoption today underscores what adopting parents, birthparents, and many adoption experts now maintain: Open adoption is the healthiest, most humane, and fastest method available. It's better for the birthmother, because she (not lawyers or social workers) decides the future of her child. It's better for children, because they're raised without the shroud of secrecy and stigma that accompanies most closed adoptions. And it's better for adopting parents, because it dramatically shortens the time it takes to obtain a baby, from an average of seven years to under one year. As director of one of the country's leading open adoption agencies and founder of the first nationwide network of open adoption organizations, Bruce Rappaport has facilitated thousands of successful open adoptions and acquired an intimate understanding of the most common and heartfelt concerns of parents seeking to adopt a baby. Interweaving personal stories and real-life experiences of adopting parents, birthparents, and adopted children, he answers the questions clients most frequently ask: What is an open adoption? How does it differ from traditional adoption? Will I ever feel like a real parent if my child's biological mother knows I'm raising her child? Will she interfere? What if the birthmother changes her mind after the adoption? How long will it take to get a child? Documenting answers with extensive personal experience and research, Dr. Rappaport paints a reassuring yet realistic picture of the open adoption process. The result is a highly informative, deeply moving book that will help many people realize the greatest joy life can offer.

Book The Post Adoption Blues

Download or read book The Post Adoption Blues written by Karen J. Foli and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2004-08-07 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 150,000 people adopt children each year, and more than 2 million parents are now raising adopted children and grandchildren. While the path to parenting through adoption is rich with rewards and fulfillment, it's not without its bumps. This compassionate, illuminating, and ultimately uplifting book is the first to openly recognize the very normal feelings of stress that adoptive families encounter as they cope with the challenges and expectations of their new families. Where do parents turn when the waited-for bonding with their adopted child is slow to form? When they find themselves grieving over the birth child they couldn't have? When the child they so eagerly welcomed into their home arrives with major, unexpected needs? Until now, adoptive parents have had to struggle silently with their feelings, which can range from flutters of anxiety to unbearable sadness. At last, Karen J. Foli, a registered nurse, and her husband, John R. Thompson, a psychiatrist, lift the curtain of secrecy from "Post Adoption Depression Syndrome" (PADS). Drawing on their own experience as adoptive parents as well as interviews with dozens of adoptive families and experts in the field, the couple offers parents the understanding, support, and concrete solutions they need to overcome post-adoption blues-and open their hearts to the joy adoption can bring.

Download or read book The Politics of Adoption written by Kerry O'Halloran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoption has always had a political dimension. Its potential use to achieve political ends has been evident throughout history and in many different cultures. In Roman 1 times an emperor would adopt a successful general to continue his rule. In Ireland under the Brehon Laws the reciprocal placements of children between clans was 2 an accepted means of cementing mutual allegiances. In Japan the adoption of non-relatives was traditionally seen as a means of allying with the fortunes of 3 the ruling family. The willingness of governments to use adoption as a political strategy was apparent, for example, in Australia where it was used to further 4 the assimilation of indigenous people. It is now present in the phenomenon of intercountry adoption where the ?ow of children, particularly in the aftermath of war, is often politics by proxy and which arguably attracts the involvement of 5 some countries for reasons of economic and political expediency. Adoption does not function in isolation. It plays a distinct role within the c- text of family law proceedings. The extent to which it is available as a resource for children in the public care system or as an adjunct to marriage proceedings is essentially politically determined. It is itself susceptible to political in?uence. 6 In fact direct political leadership, exercised ?rst by President Clinton and then 1 See, Gibbons, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Harrap, London 1949 at p. 30.

Book Born and Raised

Download or read book Born and Raised written by Jerry K. Cline and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Cline exists at the whim of an 1869 Comanche raiding party on his birthfathers family ranch in Central Texas. Jerry could also be a poster-boy for successful adoptions. He was adopted at age 3 months in 1939 by a hard-living couple from East Texas, via the Indian Territory of Oklahoma before it became a state. Despite the raw and dusty origins of his forbearers, Jerry grew up to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from Purdue University and enjoyed a long career in the aerospace industry with McDonnell Douglas Corporation (now The Boeing Company). He worked on several space and missile programs and was part of the team which developed the design for the Space Shuttle. Dr. Cline also held an academic appointment as an adjunct faculty member of the mathematics department of Washington University in St. Louis. Jerry is now retired and lives in St. Louis with his wife Phyllis. In 2001, aided by his wife, a cooperative adoption agency, and an expert genealogist, Jerry Cline began what turned out to be an exciting and successful quest for his birthparents and knowledge of how he came to be. He was 61 years old at the time. The search itself, the surprising identities of his birthparents, the heartwarming face-to-face meetings with new-found blood relatives and several years of research inspired this book. In Born and Raised, Jerry shares the details of his dramatic search and weaves a fascinating composite of the histories of his birthparents, his adoptive parents, their families, plus related events and personalities from Americas past. Thanks to two books written long ago, one by his birthfather (a renowned lawman of the Old West), and one by an aunt, Jerry is able to provide a graphic and authentic glimpse into what life was like on Americas frontier in the mid 19th century. Born and Raised is a classic tale of nature and nurture. That the stories in it are true makes the book all the more remarkable and appealing.

Book Why Did You Choose Me

Download or read book Why Did You Choose Me written by Katie Cruice Smith and published by Ambassador International. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one who has served adoptive families for a decade, I've had countless parents ask me, "How do I talk to my children about adoption?" Now, after all these years, I finally have a go-to answer: "Read Katie Cruice Smith's Why Did You Choose Me? to them, over and over." Dan Cruver, Co-founder of Together for Adoption, Author of Reclaiming Adoption Most adoptive and foster children struggle at some point in their life with knowing who they are and where they belong. After searching for adoption storybooks to read to her own adopted children, Katie Cruice Smith decided that there was a need for more books that parents could read to connect with their adopted and fostered children and address these struggles. In Why Did You Choose Me?, Katie Cruice Smith answers that question in a way that young children can understand. Drawing from her own experience as an adoptive mom to three children, Katie uses the questions her own children have asked to help them see there never really was a choice-she knew right away that they were hers. Why Did You Choose Me? lovingly demonstrates the uniqueness that each child brings to a family, and is a valuable resource for adoptive and foster families to have in their home. Endorsements Why Did You Choose Me? explores a familiar adoption theme, but is pleasantly unpredictable. The illustrations are sure to put a smile on your child's face, and your own. Though the book is written in rhyme, the verse is not sing-songy and the book has just enough sophistication to be enjoyed by everyone. Dr. Daniel Nehrbass, President of Nightlight Christian Adoptions Why Did You Choose Me? is a perfectly simple way to make any adopted child feel like they are exactly where they need to be! When our daughter asks why we chose her to be a part of our family, even though she looks different than us, this book will be invaluable to communicate our love for her. Shannon Patterson, Adoptive mom and President of Bethany Christian Services Board in Greenville, SC As a foster parent myself, I believe Why Did You Choose Me? is the perfect emotional journey to answering the very sensitive question all foster/adoptive children want to know and would recommend families add it to their library. Robert Whitney, Thornwell Foster Care Recruiter As any adoptive parent will tell you, our adopted children do ask many times, "Why did you choose me?" Now my clients who adopt have a fun and colorful resource to touch on and answer this all-important question. Katie Cruice Smith and Sarah Strickling Jones have prepared a learning tool adaptable to a child's early years, which allows an adopted child and her parents to connect on different levels with the topic of adoption. Your child will laugh and smile while learning about adoption, love, and acceptance. I will be buying Why Did You Choose Me? for all my adoptive couples! Raymond W. Godwin, Father of two adopted daughters and adoption lawyer in Greenville, SC, Co-author of The Complete Adoption Book Why Did You Choose Me? is tender, genuine, and refreshing, and it does this adoptive mom's heart and soul some good. Our daughter, from India, is now asking this very same question proposed in the book. This thoughtfully written and charmingly illustrated book is a great reminder to her of how special and unique she is, and it is a great reminder to her mom (me) of the beautiful gift of adoption. Any family, adopting or not, will be blessed by this sweet story. Kelly Parkison, Adoptive mom and author of He Knows Her Name

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people are very familiar when it comes to adoption but really have no idea about what an individual goes through when experiencing adoption. Adoption is a very huge factor simply because parents who are birthing kids in this world are not positioned to take care of them. These kids are put up for adoption, which most may see you as an easy way out. Adoption is not all bad. You can look at it on a positive or negative perspective. As you read this book, you will find that there have been too many factors set for you if you are in adoption now or have experienced adoption in the past. Remember, life has nothing to do with where you came from, but it has everything to do with where you are going, so continue to trust your journey.
