Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author (Robbyn van Frankenhuyzen): "For twenty years we have rehabilitated a wide variety of wild critters, from fawns, foxes, skunks, and crows to opposums, raccoons, rabbits, and owls. Some of the animals were injured adults, others were orphaned babies, but all of them were in need of a little help to get them back into the wild. Growing up on a farm, as well as my training as an animal technician, prepared me for many of the medical situations that arose. Gijsbert took every opportunity to sketch, paint, and photograph our temporary guests during their stay on the farm. More importantly, Gijsbert was issued all the Federal and State permits needed to care for birds of prey. Without these permits, we would never have been able to care for hawks and owls. For good reason, caring for these birds is very tightly regulated and closely monitored. Taking an owl from its nest is dangerous and illegal. We have cared for many Great Horned Owls but none of them were like Jackson, the owl in this story. His personality was unique from the very beginning and we know that we were lucky to have shared such a close bond with this wild bird. This is the true story of his life with us. Enjoy." With illustrations from Gjisbert (Nick) van Frankenhuyzen, noted wildlife artist and illustrator of our Legends series as well as The Blue Spruce by Mario Cuomo and L is for Lincoln: An Illinois Alphabet.

Download or read book My Adoption Story written by Jana Henderson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most intimidating parts of being adoptive parents is finding the best way to tell a child he or she is adopted. Parents worry that their child will interpret that truth to mean they aren't as wanted or loved, since the birth mother might to appear to have just "given them away." Jana Henderson was faced with this dilemma as her son, Matthew, turned five and was old enough to be told the truth. Overwhelmed at the prospect, Jana thought it would be easiest if she could just read Matthew a story which explains adoption in a light that shows just how much an adoptive child is loved and wanted. She wanted to find a story that demonstrates how much the parents searched and waited for their child to come into their lives. Jana hunted through book stores and the internet for a suitable story but couldn't find anything close to what she needed; so, she decided to write the story herself. Jana says, "I wanted it to be a fun story, but also very factual." The story she wrote is of a young boy named Avery who has an owl-friend that flies to his window each night and tells him a bedtime story. One night, Henry the Hoot Owl let Avery know that the story he had for him that evening was an important story, "one that is wonderful and true." Through the storytelling of the Owl to Avery, Jana was able to show how a little boy was greatly loved by his birth-mother, so much so that she wanted him to have the perfect parents. It also shows the adoptive parents waiting, praying, and hoping for their little boy. The story demonstrates the great joy everyone felt when the boy was adopted by his new parents, and all the ways they became a loving family. At the end of the story, Henry the Hoot Owl reveals that Avery is the little boy in the story. Jana used this heart-felt story that she had written to explain to Matthew that he is Avery in the story. She reports that the story was a huge success. Reading it to Matthew didn't leave him wondering or having any questions about his adoption. Jana explains, "To our amazement, he was perfectly OK with this knowledge. Our son understood and our fears were erased." A year later, without any further mention of his adoption, Matthew made a small comment to his mom, letting her know that he remembered being adopted. Jana was shocked and asked him if he recalled their talk and the story she had read to him. Matthew said, "Yes, I remember the story. I held it in my heart." Jana had to leave the room quickly so he wouldn't see her burst into tears. Matthew is seventeen today, and a senior in high school. Jana has thought for many years about sharing the story she wrote as a book, so that it might assist other adoptive parents to have a positive way to tell their children how they came to be a family. My Adoption Story as Told by Henry the Hoot Owl was released in the summer of 2017 by Triumph Press and is a colorful illustrated children's book that Jana Henderson hopes will be that missing resource to help other adoptive parents during the wonderful and overwhelming time in their lives when they tell their adoptive child how much they are loved.

This is unfortunate as we tend to learn crucial lessons about the world and ourselves within the confines of childhood play. While children might be removed from the cause of chronic trauma, the concept of play will not come naturally for them. This book (along with the complimentary parent activity guide) will help you and your child to discover a world of pretend where your child can also conquer issues in relationship.

Book excerpt: Without question, this is a classic by one of the most exciting new authors in the UFO field today. After reading it, your view of reality will never be the same. The owl has held a place of reverence and mystique throughout history. And as strange as this might seem, owls are also showing up in conjunction with the UFO experience.Mike Clelland has collected a wealth of first-hand accounts in which owls manifest in the highly charged moments that surround alien contact. There is a strangeness to these accounts that defy simple explanations. This book explores implications that go far beyond what more conservative researchers would dare consider. But the owl connection encompasses more than the UFO experience. It also includes profound synchronicities, ancient archetypes, dreams, shamanistic experiences, personal transformation, and death. From the mythic legends of our ancient past to the first-hand accounts of the UFO abductee, owls are playing some vital role. This is also a deeply personal story. It is an odyssey of self-discovery as the author grapples with his own owl and UFO encounters. What plays out is a story of transformation with the owl at the heart of this journey.

Book Stranger Care

Download or read book Stranger Care written by Sarah Sentilles and published by Random House. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • “A powerful, heartbreaking, necessary masterpiece.”—Cheryl Strayed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild The moving story of what one woman learned from fostering a newborn—about injustice, about making mistakes, about how to better love and protect people beyond our immediate kin May you always feel at home. After their decision not to have a biological child, Sarah Sentilles and her husband, Eric, decide to adopt via the foster care system. Despite knowing that the system’s goal is the child’s reunification with the birth family, Sarah opens their home to a flurry of social workers who question them, evaluate them, and ultimately prepare them to welcome a child into their lives—even if it means most likely having to give the child back. After years of starts and stops, and endless navigation of the complexities and injustices of the foster care system, a phone call finally comes: a three-day-old baby girl named Coco, in immediate need of a foster family. Sarah and Eric bring this newborn stranger home. “You were never ours,” Sarah tells Coco, “yet we belong to each other.” A love letter to Coco and to the countless children like her, Stranger Care chronicles Sarah’s discovery of what it means to mother—in this case, not just a vulnerable infant but the birth mother who loves her, too. Ultimately, Coco’s story reminds us that we depend on family, and that family can take different forms. With prose that Nick Flynn has called “fearless, stirring, rhythmic,” Sentilles lays bare an intimate, powerful story with universal concerns: How can we care for and protect one another? How do we ensure a more hopeful future for life on this planet? And if we’re all related—tree, bird, star, person—how might we better live?
