Book Promoting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in East and Southern Africa

Download or read book Promoting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in East and Southern Africa written by Knut-Inge Klepp and published by Nordiska Afrikainstitutet. This book was released on 2008 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, as in many parts of the world, adolescent reproductive health is a controversial issue for policy makers and programme planners. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to HIV and AIDS and to a host of other problems such as sexually transmitted infection, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortions, sexual abuse, female genital mutilation and unsafe circumcision. Yet many countries do not have adolescent health policies in place and much remains to be done to ensure that adolescents can access appropriate sexual and reproductive health services. The authors of this volume present new perspectives and strategies to promote adolescent sexual and reproductive health. In particular, they make a unique attempt to bring together social and biomedical science and to disseminate concrete empirical evidence from existing programmes, carefully analysing what works and what does not at the local level.

Book Love Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa

Download or read book Love Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa written by Deevia Bhana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa interrupts the relative silence around teenage constructions of love in South Africa. Against the backdrop of gender inequalities, HIV and violence, the book situates teenage constructions of love and romance within the wider social and cultural context underwritten by the histories of apartheid, chronic unemployment, poverty, and the endless struggle to survive. By drawing on focus group discussions with African teenage men and women, the book addresses teenage Africans as active agents, providing a more nuanced picture of their desires and their dilemmas through which sexuality and love are experienced. The chapters in the book conceptualise desiring love, material love, pure love, forced love and fearing love. It argues that love is intrinsically linked to cultural practices and material realities which mold particular formations of teenage masculinities and femininities. This book will be of interest to academics, undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in sociology, HIV, health and gender studies, development and postcolonial studies and African studies.

Book Family Influence on Adolescent Sexual Behaviour in South Africa

Download or read book Family Influence on Adolescent Sexual Behaviour in South Africa written by Emma Shuvai Chikovore and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-02-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the connection between family structure and circumstances, parental engagement, and adolescent sexual behavior. Given that South Africa contains the highest portion of the global HIV epidemic within a single country, a comprehensive, book-length investigation into—sometimes risky—adolescent sexual behaviour is necessary. Drawing from the longitudinal Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS) of more than 4,000 adolescents between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two, as well as qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with parents and adolescents, this study pioneers empirical investigation of adolescent sexual behavior within the intricate framework of family dynamics in South Africa.

Book Sex Sexuality and Sexual Health in Southern Africa

Download or read book Sex Sexuality and Sexual Health in Southern Africa written by Deevia Bhana and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book—Sex, Sexuality and Sexual Health in Southern Africa—is structured around four major themes: gender and sexuality diversity; love, pleasure and respect; gender, sexual violence and health; and sexuality, gender and sexual justice. Chapters in this book analyse sexuality in relation to recent developments in the Southern African region and what this might mean for contemporary theory, policy and practice. Sex, sexuality and sexual health are often viewed through a narrow biomedical lens, ignoring the fact that they are profoundly social and historical in character. The contributors in this book bring to light the entanglements of sexuality with respect, recognition, rights and mutual respectful pleasure. Authors draw attention to partnerships, allyships and feminist, queer and trans coalitions in the pursuit of sexual health and justice in the region. The book will be of interest to final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and activists as well as those working in Women and Gender Studies, Critical Sexuality Studies, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Development Studies, Public Health, Psychology, Education, Sociology and Anthropology.

Book Adolescent Sexuality and Culture

Download or read book Adolescent Sexuality and Culture written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of a high level of sexual activity and high prevalence of teenage pregnancy mentioned above, it becomes important to examine the cultural factors that may influence the attitudes of mothers in terms of the role they are expected to play as 'sexuality' socializing agents. [...] Ethical issues The purpose of the study was explained to the participants, so also was the role that the participants were expected to play; the procedures of the meetings were also explained to the participants. [...] The data were analyzed using the following phases: Phase 1: interpretation of the transcript The researcher read the protocols several times to get an understanding of the participants' general expression and language. [...] 'I think it is good these days even though traditionally it was the aunts and the grandmothers who used to talk to the child, I think that the mother should take the responsibility to talk to her child about sexuality issues.' It also seemed that considerable changes in values has occurred between generations where teenage girls were previously not exposed to sexual material and knowledge as it is. [...] Although they discouraged the use of contraceptives, most of them believed that they should tell their children about the advantages and the disadvantages of contraception.

Book Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Africa

Download or read book Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Africa written by Ebenezer Durojaye and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores recent developments, constraints and opportunities relating to the advancement of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Africa. Despite many positive developments in relation to sexual and reproductive health in recent years, many Africans still encounter challenges, for instance in poor maternity services, living with HIV, and discrimination on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation or identity. Covering topics such as abortion, gender identity, adolescent sexuality and homosexuality, the chapters in this book discuss the impact of culture, morality and social beliefs on the enjoyment of sexual and reproductive health and rights across the continent, particularly in relation to vulnerable and marginalized groups. The book also explores the role of litigation, national human rights institutions and regional human rights bodies in advancing the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region. Throughout, the contributions highlight the relevance of a rights-based framework in addressing topical and contentious issues on sexual and reproductive health and rights within Sub-Saharan Africa. This book will be of interest to researchers of sexuality, civil rights and health in Africa. The opening section confronts the realities of sexual abuse of pre-pubertal children and the way abuse is represented in the press. The second section discusses the individual and socio-cultural causes of child sexual abuse. Section three covers legal and policy responses to the problem, while the fourth section presents a series of accounts of interventions on behalf of abused children drawn from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
