Book Adolescent Self esteem and Sexual Behavior

Download or read book Adolescent Self esteem and Sexual Behavior written by Rajan Pant and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the studies addressing adolescent sexual behavior in America are asymmetrically focused on either one of boys and girls or one race, primarily African Americans. Studies also are small scale and ethnographic by nature. There is lack of cross-sectional studies addressing both adolescent boys and girls, and African Americans and whites making use of a wide range of variables in terms of their sexual behavior. The present study explores sexual behavior making use of a nationally representative cross-sectional (race and gender) dataset addressing both social structural and demographic variables of interest. The data analyzed by this study were collected by Add Health as the second wave of a longitudinal study of health and well being of American adolescents. This study analyzes data collected from a school based stratified sample of African American and white adolescents only (N = 2834). Eight major determinants of adolescent sexual behavior are explored. These are religiosity, self-esteem, family support, peer group involvement, school attachment, gender, race and age. Five of these variables are developed as additive scale. These scales had Cronbach's coefficient-alpha that ranged from school attachment (.994), religiosity (.993), family support (.796), and self-esteem (.714) to peer group (.309). The other three variables are race, gender, and age which are dichotomized. Dependent variable is sexual activity which is dichotomized as yes and no. Statistically significant relationships are found between school attachment and adolescent sexual behavior, peer group and sexual behavior, age and sexual behavior, family support and sexual behavior, and race and sexual behavior. But self-esteem, religiosity, and gender are found not to have significant relationship with sexual behavior. Results of logistic regression analysis reveals that only school attachment, peer group, race and age are significant predictors of sexual behavior among these adolescents. However, religiosity, self-esteem, family support, and gender are not significant predictors. Further research is recommended to take into account other contextual variables pertinent to social class, neighborhood factor, urbanicity, adolescents' attitudes towards sex, and their perception of parental attitude towards sex because the dataset did not contain them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this volume at this time appears particularly auspi cious. Biological, psychological, and social change is greater during the pubertal years than at any other period since infancy. While the past two decades have witnessed a virtual explosion of productive research on the first years of life, until recently research on adolescence, and particularly on puberty and early adolescence, has lagged substantially behind. This book provides encouraging evidence that things are changing for the better. Considered separately, the individual chapters in this book include important contributions to our growing knowledge of the biological mechanisms involved in pubertal onset and subsequent changes, as well as of the psychological and social aspects of these changes, both as con sequences and determinants. In this regard, the book clearly benefits from the breadth of disciplines represented by the contributors, includ ing developmental endocrinology, adolescent medicine, pediatrics, psy chology, and sociology, among others.

Book Adolescent Sexual Behavior

Download or read book Adolescent Sexual Behavior written by Eva Rene Hillman and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one million U.S. teenagers become pregnant each year. In addition to pregnancy risk, adolescents are at risk for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including AIDS. Little is known regarding the multivariate contributions to adolescent sexual behavior. The following study was designed to test a Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior. According to this model, adolescent sexual behavior is a function of maturation, socio-demographic factors, and the social-learning influences of parents, school, media, and peers. These variables in turn impact the knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, social skills and drug use of the developing adolescent. Method. The Developmental Social-Learning Model of adolescent sexual behavior was tested in a sample of 404 Anglo and Latino adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. Data were collected by a face-to-face interview and a videotaped role-play procedure assessing relevant social skills. Hierarchical regression analysis was calculated to assess the relative contribution of variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity. Hierarchical analyses were also calculated separately for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos. Lastly, hierarchical equations were calculated to assess the utility of the model in explaining the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents. Results. Each of the nine variables blocks contributed significantly to the hierarchical equation, accounting for a total of 58% of the variance in adolescent sexual activity. When calculated differentially for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos, the model remained highly significant for all groups. The hierarchical models of condom use accounted for 28% of the variance in condom use in the first relationship and 49% of the variance in condom use in the last six months. Conclusions. The significant contributions of the variable blocks to the variation in adolescent sexual activity supports the validity of the Developmental Social-Learning Model. Calculations of separate models for males, females, Anglos, and Latinos highlight several important distinctions between these groups. Finally, the application of the model to the condom behavior of coitally active adolescents provides a more thorough understanding of condom behavior and targets specific areas for future interventions.

Book Self Esteem and Adolescent Sexual Attitudes and Behavior

Download or read book Self Esteem and Adolescent Sexual Attitudes and Behavior written by Roger B. Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine; (1) if adolescent self-esteem is related to premarital sexual attitudes and intercourse behavior; (2) if religious affiliation and church attendance affect the relationship between adolescent self-esteem and premarital sexual attitudes and behavior. Approximately 2400 adolescents residing in California, New Mexico, and Utah comprised the sample. Adolescents who attended church services more often reported less sexually permissive attitudes and behavior than those who attended church less often. Similarly, Mormons' premarital sexual attitudes and behavior was more conservative than was the case for non-Mormon adolescents. Findings indicated that the nature of the relationship between permissiveness and self-esteem did depend on cultural norms or contexts. In the most conservative normative contexts (among Mormons and frequent church attenders) there was a negative relationship between self-esteem and sexual attitudes and sexual behavior; there was no significant relationship between self-esteem and sexual attitudes and sexual behavior among the more moderate sample groups.

Book Sexual Identity and Familial Factors Discriminating Sexual Behaviors in Adolescents

Download or read book Sexual Identity and Familial Factors Discriminating Sexual Behaviors in Adolescents written by Kathleen M. Greaves and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying factors related to adolescent sexual activity is an important issue for health care, education, and public policy. This research explores the idea that sexual identity relates to adolescent sexual activity and the riskiness of the behavior. Sexual identity is composed of many factors, including self-esteem, sexual self-efficacy, body image, and social isolation. As well, the development of sexual identity is related to age and familial relations. From a symbolic interaction perspective, the formation of sexual identity occurs through the creation of highly subjective symbols or meanings assigned to sexuality. Riskier sexual behaviors seem to occur predominantly in adolescence, and understanding the meanings associated with sexual identity may help to explain why. It was hypothesized that adolescent sexual identity would be related to whether or not adolescents had participated in sexual activity and if they had, whether such activity was safer or riskier. The data, collected from 2,373 7th through 12th graders, were part of a community-based program in a rural northwest community. Participants were divided into three groups based upon their sexual activity status of abstaining behavior, safer behavior, or riskier behavior. Group membership was determined utilizing measures of birth control use, sexually transmitted disease history, and pregnancy experience. Discriminating variables included self-esteem, sexual self-efficacy, body image, social isolation, parental monitoring, and age. Analysis revealed significant sex differences on all six discriminating variables. Stepwise discriminant function analysis found age, parental monitoring, and sexual self-efficacy to be significant contributors to the model for both sexes. The discriminant function classification, utilizing all six variables, correctly classified 93% of both females and males, illuminating the significance of sexual identity in discriminating among the groups. Older adolescents with an increased sense of sexual identity and parents who monitor their behavior, may be more inclined to participate in safer sexual behaviors. The development of sexual identity is a culmination of cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes that together help the individual see her/himself as a sexual person. The research presented here provides insight into the sexual identity of adolescents. Such knowledge may be beneficial in designing sexuality education programs designed to facilitate positive, well-developed sexual identity.

Book Is Self Esteem a Double Edged Sword Self Esteem and the Onset of Adolescent Sexual Activity

Download or read book Is Self Esteem a Double Edged Sword Self Esteem and the Onset of Adolescent Sexual Activity written by Marta Favara and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-esteem has been conceptualized as a "social vaccine". The belief is that high self-esteem can inoculate young people, against vulnerability to a wide range of social illnesses. This study gives a contribution in the understanding of the causal relation between self-esteem and sexual behaviour among American adolescents. I analyzes the impact of different levels of early self-esteem on a wide set of risky sexual behaviours. I use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and I take into account the endogeneity of self-esteem using instrumental variables methods and measuring self-esteem before sexual initiation. I find that self-esteem over a certain threshold' is a protective resource for girls, delaying the onset of sexual activity, reducing the number of occasional sexual partners and increasing the likelihood of having protected sexual encounters.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively covers the entire range of sexual challenges and risks encountered by teens and twenties. It encourages them to consciously choose and set safe boundaries that promote responsible sexual behavior. The focus is on developing self-esteem through various life skills, which would help them to steer through the turbulent period of their life. This book and also suggests ways in which some who might have blown up their life can bounce back into a fruitful life. "I recently had the chance to read this book by Rajaratnam Abel entitled 'Living in the Cloud. ' It is a matter of fact book that speaks to young people in a plain and open manner about the issues of teen age sexuality. There are no sensationalizing issues and it is presented in a logical style. I found the part covering the Internet, Social Media and Sexting as well as the portion on Pornography to be especially helpful in giving young people practical definitions and practical reasons to avoid the dangers in the entire online and social media world. I recommend this as a book to be bought by parents to share with their teens, especially if the parents find it a bit awkward to speak openly about sexual things with their children. Pastor Dave Kenney, Jakarta, Indonesia This shorter version 'Living in the Cloud' is a superb book for teens. It is extremely well researched and written. It is very practical and if teens heed the warnings, they can spare themselves a lot of misery, heartache and disasters while growing up!" Baktharaj Chelliah, Pediatrician and classmate, New York
