Book Family Support Network for Adolescent Cannabis Users

Download or read book Family Support Network for Adolescent Cannabis Users written by Nancy L. Hamilton and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substance-abusing adolescents experiencing inadequate family structure and functioning will be at a serious disadvantage with regard to recovery. Their recovery, however, is likely to be enhanced if family functioning can be improved. This report explains the family support network (FSN) intervention, which seeks to extend the focus of treatment beyond the world of the adolescent by engaging the family. The FSN model uses only a limited number of the more costly in-home therapy sessions coupled with several less costly group sessions. This approach seeks to engage families in the treatment process, improve parents¿ competence in supporting their child¿s recovery, and shift therapy from formal treatment to a support group for parents. This is a print-on-demand edition of a hard-to-find report.

Book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often it is difficult for parents to recognize when their child is abusing alcohol, using illegal drugs, or in trouble with other substances that are hazardous to their health, safety, and wellbeing. Clearing the Haze is a guide designed to help parents determine whether their child may have a substance problem and, if so, how to begin to address it. The book includes the voices and insight of experts in substance abuse counseling, young people in recovery, and parents who have lived the nightmare of adolescent addiction. The book moves readers through an overview of adolescent brain development, the warning signs of drug use and addiction, treatment options, what families should expect of therapy, the basics of productive communication, and the difficulties of dealing lovingly with addicted teens. The authors encourage families entering the 12th step of “giving back” to consider advocacy for smarter public policies surrounding drug access and addiction treatment. They also provide a list of resources parents may find useful. A necessary resource for every community, this book will help parents, teachers, friends, and others help kids who need help.

This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus, substance-abusing adolescents experiencing inadequate family structure and functioning will be at a serious disadvantage with regard to recovery. Their recovery, however, is likely to be enhanced if family functioning can be improved. Deficits in family functioning may be related to dimensions of authority, roles, boundaries, communication, and routines. Parental authority may be eroded and roles confused; boundaries may be blurred or violated; communication may be dysfunctional and conflict laden; and family structure or routine may be lacking. Inadequate parenting skills or poor understanding of family dynamics may also contribute to a chaotic or otherwise dysfunctional family context.

Book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use

Download or read book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use written by Robert H Coombs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an essential volume for educators, social workers, health care professionals, and parents who are frustrated by the consuming power of drugs over the lives of young people and looking for answers to this enormous problem. In this unique and highly practical volume, experts concentrate on the family--the foundation of mental health and social control--as the most positive force in the prevention of adolescent drug use. Despite the “war on drugs,” young people in large numbers continue to use substances. This instructive guide focuses on educating and strengthening families--which makes stronger children who are less likely to use drugs--instead of the traditional efforts based on rehabilitation instead of prevention. It offers instructive background information about societal forces that affect families and make it difficult to raise drug-free youngsters. Family differences are discussed, such as family structure, parenting styles, ethnic and cultural characteristics. Contributors thoroughly examine practical, effective interventions--at home, at school, and with peers--that are positive rather than negative, instructional rather than punitive, and preventive instead of remedial.

Book Cannabis and Young People

Download or read book Cannabis and Young People written by Richard Jenkins and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2005-12-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cannabis is at the centre of ongoing controversial and often confused debate. Opinions on its potential impact on health are sharply divided: some argue that it poses serious risks to mental health and that adolescent use may lead to psychotic illness in young adulthood, or that it acts as a gateway to hard drugs such as cocaine or opiates. Conversely, others point to alcohol or tobacco being far more harmful yet entirely legal. Cannabis and Young People aims to shed light on the current debates by reviewing all the available evidence on a range of issues relating to the use of cannabis among children and adolescents and summarizing the main conclusions in clear, jargon-free language. Areas covered include: * Patterns of cannabis use * Changes in usage * Young people's views on cannabis * The potential harmful effects, including mental health problems, educational attainment, antisocial behaviour * The family and social factors that can initiate cannabis use * The progression to regular use * The effects of decriminalization This book will be an essential read for anyone needing informed, authoritative information about cannabis and its effects.
