Book Fathers and Adolescents

Download or read book Fathers and Adolescents written by Shmuel Shulman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding and study of fathers has traditionally assumed that fathers, compared to mothers, are less involved with their children. Originally published in 1997 Fathers and Adolescents presents a different approach that focuses on the distinctive role of fathers in the lives of their adolescents, especially in their role in adolescents’ attainment of developmental tasks. Drawing on a variety of disciplines, the authors’ examine the relationships of fathers to their adolescents in the context of a changing society. They find that fathers interact in ways that are different from those of mothers, but that are important for both normal and disturbed adolescent development. Psychopathological, aggressive and incestuous behaviour is considered as well as the role of the father in more ideal circumstances. Drawing on the authors’ wealth of clinical experience, this title will still be an important resource for all professionals working with adolescents, as well as those in research.

  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book Young Fathers written by Shaun Hammond and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored personal perceptions and experiences of first-time fatherhood in order to explore how young men (18-24 years) experienced the transition to early fatherhood. It sought to extend our understanding of young fathers by attending to the pleasures and distresses of first-time fatherhood. In addition, it examined how internal and external processes influenced young men's adult development and perceived well- being. Twenty semi-structured interviews, consisting of open-ended questions, were conducted at locations in East Anglia. Framework (Ritchie and Spencer, 1994) was employed as the analytical approach. Most young men overwhelmingly welcomed the perceived changes brought about by young fatherhood and identified these changes as a consequence of the transition to young fatherhood. Most fathers delineated with great enthusiasm their pleasure at becoming fathers and the challenge to normative judgements of young fathers. Pleasures included role competency, becoming more sharing with others and new biographies. They were less prepared to discuss distresses, but those outlined included social isolation, obstacles to child access and negative stereotypes. The biographical approach adopted has highlighted the importance of considering both personal and social processes in mapping experiences. These processes had important transformative consequences for adult development and well-being. This study has contributed to our knowledge of young fathers by illustrating the pleasures associated with the transition to young fatherhood and how fatherhood affects personal biographies, whilst acknowledging how for some men, young fatherhood can be a time of distress and anxiety.

Book Teenage Fatherhood Social Construction Vulnerability and Societal Implication in Western Kenya

Download or read book Teenage Fatherhood Social Construction Vulnerability and Societal Implication in Western Kenya written by Dina Were and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, , course: social studies, language: English, abstract: While teen fatherhood falls outside the scope of traditional norms, values, and expectations, it has become a serious social-health problem in Africa and Kenya in particular. Teen fathers are neglected by educational, social research and interventions, hence lacking in previous and current discourses on pregnancy, birth and childbearing, which has traditionally been viewed as a female affair. Drawing experiences from Western Kenya in particular Kisii and Vihiga counties, the study sought to understand how teen fathers, and parents’ perceptions and attitudes toward teen fathers influence vulnerability and policy implications in Kenya. The study used mixed research methodology to explore parents and teen fathers’ experiences and perceptions. The study used a questionnaire for data collection from the general population, interviews with parents and selected teen fathers. Data analysis was both qualitative and quantitative. The study found that teenage fathers are unacceptable in the society, deemed ignorant, careless, uncaring, and social deviants. The study revealed that the majority of teen fathers were unable to meet parental obligations due to unemployment, lack of parenting knowledge due to age, and educational obligation as most are still in school. The study concludes that becoming a teen father is a significant and critical life event manifesting developmental crisis. Teen fathers endure conflict of future role, accepting impending fatherhood and negative society perception towards them. The study recommends that interventions designed should consider incorporating teen fathers as a way of addressing their needs as well as mitigating against future teenage pregnancies. There is also a need to create awareness to families and communities on the need for social acceptance of teen fathers and mould the victims to adopt acceptable behaviour and be responsible in the society.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
