Book Effectiveness of Admission Criteria in Predicting Student Academic Performance in a Bachelor of Social Work Program

Download or read book Effectiveness of Admission Criteria in Predicting Student Academic Performance in a Bachelor of Social Work Program written by Lynsey Soper-Thistle and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: Explore whether admission criteria were associated with academic performance for a Bachelor of Social Work program. Methodology: Correlations and regression models were used to determine associations between admission criteria and performance of 371 students. One-way ANOVAs and ttests were used to examine potential differences between degree programs, cohorts, and raters. Results: Previous academic standing was a consistent predictor for the First Degree program; however, varied by pedagogical area and cohort for the Second Degree. An admissions test was more predictive for the First Degree than the Second Degree. Experience ratings were not an adequate predictor for the First Degree, but were for the Second Degree. The predictability of suitability ratings varied by program and pedagogical area. Conclusion: Admission criteria are predictive of performance, particularly through multivariate analyses. Differences in the predictability of admission criteria reiterate the need for a varied admissions model. In addition, supports must be available to all students.

Book Exploring the Impact of School Social Workers on Academic Achievement in Title 1 Public High Schools

Download or read book Exploring the Impact of School Social Workers on Academic Achievement in Title 1 Public High Schools written by Julianne F. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Mapping the relationship of psychiatric social worker (PSW) utilization on academic achievement can help expand the understanding of school social workers' role on the academic outcomes of at-risk youth. This study explored the relationship between two characteristics of PSW utilization (presence and number of days at school) with Los Angeles Unified School District Title 1 public high school Academic Performance Index (API) scores and graduation rates using secondary data. The majority of students who attended the 61 included schools identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged (72%) and Hispanic (77%). After controlling for enrollment size, the level of PSW utilization was not related to academic achievement. Results indicated that reduced PSW utilization predicted higher API scores. Lower enrollment size predicted greater API scores. Findings point to the value of multiple school characteristics in explaining and intervening in the risk of academic failure. Implications for youth, schools, and the social profession are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume tackles the long overdue critical examination and evaluation of the state of the art of field instruction in social work education. For the first time, the findings of empirical research are consolidated to review, test, and question prevailing assumptions in social work field instruction. The vigorous assessment of the state of the art in field instruction, the field placement process, field instructors, and students enables the social work profession to reflect upon its accomplishments and review its practices. Provocative, informative, and controversial, Empirical Studies in Field Instruction also urges the profession to make changes and to insist on continued high caliber empirical research efforts in field instruction. It is an excellent resource for directors of field instruction, faculty field liaisons, field instructors, social work students, classroom instructors, researchers, and doctoral students.
