  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Americans at the Gate written by Carl J. Bon Tempo and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the 1930s, when the United States tragically failed to open its doors to Europeans fleeing Nazism, the country admitted over three million refugees during the Cold War. This dramatic reversal gave rise to intense political and cultural battles, pitting refugee advocates against determined opponents who at times successfully slowed admissions. The first comprehensive historical exploration of American refugee affairs from the midcentury to the present, Americans at the Gate explores the reasons behind the remarkable changes to American refugee policy, laws, and programs. Carl Bon Tempo looks at the Hungarian, Cuban, and Indochinese refugee crises, and he examines major pieces of legislation, including the Refugee Relief Act and the 1980 Refugee Act. He argues that the American commitment to refugees in the post-1945 era occurred not just because of foreign policy imperatives during the Cold War, but also because of particular domestic developments within the United States such as the Red Scare, the Civil Rights Movement, the rise of the Right, and partisan electoral politics. Using a wide variety of sources and documents, Americans at the Gate considers policy and law developments in connection with the organization and administration of refugee programs. Book Refugee Resettlement in the U S

Download or read book Refugee Resettlement in the U S written by Julia Vadala Taft and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviews refugee resettlement policies and programmes in the United States during the past twenty-five years. The report is divided into three parts. Part One is a description of the general context in which policies and programmes have been developed. In Part Two, there is a detailed analysis of specific resettlement programmes, particularly those for Indo-Chinese, Cuban and Soviet refugees; it also includes a description of resettlement programmes of other Western governments. In Part Three, the authors present a series of recommendations aimed at improving services, strengthening governmental and voluntary agency cooperation and an expansion of research programmes. They recommend that refugees be viewed as only transitional dependent populations requiring concentrated services over an initial period and they emphasize the need for Federal legislation on refugee asylum and assistance.

Book Calculated Kindness

Download or read book Calculated Kindness written by Gil Loescher and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this carefully documented account of United States policy toward refugees since World War II, the authors examine the competing policies and principles that have regulated immigration practices in the United States. They focus on the conflicting pulls of ideological opportunities, ethnic immigration interests, humanitarianism, restrictionism, and the objectives of foreign policy initiatives, and argue that the Federal government has been selective in accepting refugees despite the ideologically neutral standard set by the Refugee Act of 1980. Based on interviews with government authorities, U.N. officials, and personnel from private settlement agencies, Loescher and Scanlan demonstrate that refugees welcomed are mainly those claiming to be oppressed by left-wing regimes. Book America s Banquet of Cultures

Download or read book America s Banquet of Cultures written by Ronald Fernández and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The melting pot is a myth, according to Fernandez, who shows that the United States is and always has been a banquet of cultures. As he argues, the best way to deal with the more than 20 million new immigrants since 1965 is to accept, recognize, and eagerly explore the differences among the American people. Fernandez seeks to forge a positive national consensus based on two building blocks. First, the nation's many ethnic groups can be a powerful source of unprecedented economic, artistic, and scientific creativity. Secondly, the nation's many ethnic groups offer a way to erase the black/white dichotomy which, masks the shared injustices of millions of European, Asian, African, Native, and Latino Americans. This is a provocative analysis of how we arrived at our current ethnic and racial dilemmas and what can be done to move beyond them. Scholars and students of American immigration and social policy as well as concerned citizens will find the book equally rewarding.
