Book Administrative Attitudes and Teacher Outcomes in Professional Development

Download or read book Administrative Attitudes and Teacher Outcomes in Professional Development written by Kathryn A. Short and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect of administrator attitudes toward professional development on teacher outcomes, independent of the mode and quantity of professional development. Although research has established that administrators with positive views of professional development are more likely to use ongoing, well-planned professional development, and that these elements also lead to improved teacher outcomes, no study has looked at the direct link. This study, using the School and Staffing Survey from the 1999-2000 school year, examined whether or not a direct link between administrator attitudes and teacher outcomes exists and its strength, holding the factors of mode and quantity constant. Using an Ordinary Least Squares regression, overall, administrator attitudes were found to have a small but significant direct influence on teacher outcomes in professional development, as measured in terms of overall job satisfaction, teacher feelings of autonomy and ratings of professional development, but not in terms of teacher plans for retention. Implications for district and state-level policies are discussed.

Book Administrative Reform

Download or read book Administrative Reform written by Gerald E. Caiden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is administrative reform? How is it differentiated from other kinds of social reform? Who are administrative reformers and how do they approach their task? And who benefits and who suffers from it? Does a theory of administrative reform exist?A survey of published research on administrative reform reveals that satisfactory answers to these questions are handicapped by methodological and theoretical shortcomings. There are no common definitions, no agreement over content, no selected boundaries, no clear links with the wide phenomenon of social reform, no firm hypothesis tested by empirical findings, and no continuous dialogue between practitioners and theorists. This book is the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of the subject for professionals and students in the fields of public and private administration. It carefully examines the diverse interdisciplinary literature on the subject and identifies and develops the most promising approaches towards a unified theory.Caiden shows how the study of administrative reform can contribute substantially to the development of administrative theory, and constructs a working definition of the phenomenon of administrative reform, distinguishing it from social change and from administrative change. The practical use of this definition is tested by the analysis of various case histories of administrative cultures of different periods in history, from which a common cycle of reform processes is discerned. The author follows with a detailed examination of the processes themselves. The book concludes with a discussion of the obstacles to reform and a review of the author's findings and conclusions.

Combining both theory and practice, and providing concrete examples, Hope begins by detailing the evolution of the concept of development from the inter-war years through the 1950s when the expression Third World first emerged, to the 1970s and the present when wholesale technology transfer and other new approaches emphasizing economic independence began to take precedence. The chapters that follow chart the history of modern development administration focusing on important issues such as the role of the development administrator in the implementation of public policy; the function of the public servant versus that of the politician; bureaucracy in government; and the increasing need for technical personnel to carry out development policies.
